why is everyone so up-in-arms at this guy striking the mouth? hell, most clay pot drums are made JUST for that purpose. this is no major offense, it's not like he's playing tablas with drumsticks or anything.
What does rock and roll have to do with real guitar playing, since the guitar was not originally developed to play rock and roll? Traditional instruments have their place with "pure" music, but music evolves by recombining traditional sounds and using instruments in ways for which they were not originally intended. Like the cajon in Flamenco music, for example.
i'm thinking of buying one. how heavy is that one, because online i've found one that said it weighed 11 pounds and another that said it weighed 44 pounds
Great. Never beeh there. I'm in NYC. Pass the word on the DVD. I'm trying to help my friend with this project. It's the first of a series. He's starting production in India with another great percussionist in a few weeks. I'll send you the website when I get all the info. Good luck to you. Enjoy your Ghatam!
If you really want to learn how to play Ghatam, check out the new DVD that's out on the market Vikku Vanayakram a renowendIndian Ghatam player that has toured the world, even won a grammy. This DVD teaches "anyone" how to play step by step. D Wood, the creator of this project has memorialized this very talented musician. The DVD is called The Ultimate Guru. Get it through Rythym House in India or the the "Ultimate Guru" website which I don't have at the moment. I will come back to post it.
Oh, not a hint to you directly at all. My posted comment was to anyone who is interested in learning Ghatam. You are actually very good. With the DVD you would be awesome! Thanks for your reply. Just curious. Are you in India or the States? Liz
It's a ghatam, but the playing is not Indian at all; the strikes are weak, and the hands are held away from the instrument, which should not be. Nice fake, tho.
This is sweet. I really want to learn the ghatam myself. Your fingering seems odd though. In most of the videos I've seen, the musicians only use their forefingers, all their fingers together, or the last three fingers together, they dont seem to separate the fingers like you do. I actually like your way better. Where did you get your ghatam?

Sounds great. I was looking for a good example of how the ghatam sounds by itself and this is exactly what I needed.

thanks for the hint!
By saying 'anyone', do you mean that 'even me' can learn it?! haha...
sorry... I just touch this instrument for fun, maybe once in a year, no ambition to become a real Ghatam player.
But thanks anyway.... cheers, ww
