How could someone who's THAT bad of a horseman make it in the Cavalry? It's a good thing he wasn't assigned to actual combat, otherwise he'd have killed himself with his own pistol.
Poor Wilton, he was the Barney Fife of his family, but at least he wasn't an obnoxious twit about how great he wasn't.

the only scene i remember from this series is the story of how the indian tribe got its name, the faa kaa wee tribe.the chief explains, paraphrased, "we traveled many moons over hills and valleys.....one day we climbed up a tall hill and fell off the cliff on the other side....when we woke up we said ""we're the faa kaa wee"!" so...my hat is off the "where the fuck are we" tribe!!! LMFAO!!
ok.....the story might not be word for word, its been 3 decades....but that the gist of it
I'm a teenager, and when I came across this series a few years ago, I wondered what the hell happened to TV while I was alive. This series is so good, I have to make up a new word just to contain the awesomeness.
The dorm I lived in college had towers that were identified by letter A, B, etc. we were in F tower, so our intramural teams were obviously known as F Troop. Our teams matched our namesake.
The name "Hekowi" Indians is a play on a famous semi-dirty joke of the period about a fictional Indian tribe called the "Fakowi"'s. Johnny Carson would make sly references on his show about the "Fakowi Indians". but didn't dare tell the joke. By today's standards, the joke is pretty tame.
THANKYOU SO MUCH.....ONE OF MY FAVORITE SHOWS WHEN I WAS KID.....WISH THEY WOULD BRING ALL THESE KINDS OF SHOWS BACK TO TELEVISION...THE SHOWS TODAY ARE NOT THE SAME......THANKS AGAIN FOR THE MEMORIES.....
There actually was an F Troop for real, but it was during the Indian wars in the late 1800s. I have this book about the Indian wars, Custers last stand and all that. Sh*t was sick. The Indians not only use to scalp the troops but would also behead them and put their heads on a stick. On the other hand, the US would slaughter entire villages. Just bloody as hell, all so some white douchebags could farm in Indian territory.
Growing up in the 80's & early 90's, I used to LOVE this show! This was an innocent, well-written, creative show. When I first saw this show, my first thought was, "Whoa, that's Vint from 'Mama's family'!" I was a true 80's baby. LOL
P.S. I'm 29 (since I have to give my age on here).
My GG Grandfather was in the 1st Indiana Cavalry during the Civil War. A diary described him as a man who fell off his horse into the river and was sometimes "in the corn." Another man described an officer as a "walking shithouse." And this was a good unit!
I'm 15 (because I need to announce my age for some reason before commenting) and I enjoy this show - but I strongly disagree with a lot of the comments that television has gone to hell since this era. Reality TV=Absolute shit, as do sensationalist news programs and childrens programs, but their are a lot of modern day serials and comedys that kick the hell out of the outdated and frankly corny humour of F-Troop. I think the only modern appeal it would have would be purely nostalgic.

They dared not ever do something like this, involving black slaves and their white owners. So there are some untouchable aspects of American history. It was thought Ok to goof on Indians, back in the 60s. But this may have proved wrong, and gotten the show canceled.
they got canceled because Warner Bros got tired of the show hogging up that western set, they reusue for almost all the other westerns they make on film and tv back then.
I am sure the cast is already and set for this movie... And the last time I had talk to the director about this, he said that more then likely they will shoot in 2010, Summer time. The location has been picked... I was told that I won't be disappointed in the movie.. I am also a BIG FAN of F Troop!
This Show more than Deserves a remake. it has to stay true to the Original Show. It has to be done like a time Capsule which is why the Original Series was always popular in Syndication. It has to be Unpolitically Correct.
A reamake has to be Energized, Slapstick Hysterical Comedy like Pirates of The Carribbean and not taken too seriously.
Johnny Depp should sit this one out. He would maybe fit as an Indian Medicine Man as a Cameo with maybe a sly comment about the White Man.
@Roadracer987654321 They are going to make a movie.... They should be shooting sometime next year.. And it will have a "Blazing Trails" twist to it..
Kelsey Grammer when he was younger would have been perfect as Sgt. O'Rourke. randy Quaid would have been ok. but he would have made a mockery out of the Uniform. Will Ferrell would be ok as Cap't. Parmenter only. Since both men are pure idiots he would work. Johhny Depp should get a cameo only as an Indian Medicine Man. he is not loud enuf to be Col. Agarn.
Actually I was wrong about the composer. It was Franklyn's successor "William Lava" after his abrupt death during the making of a Tweety and Sylvester cartoon.......William Lava was a rabid Anti-Communist, often pushing for direct military action against Castro.
This Theme Song was one of the "very last if not the last" in Hollywood to be performed by a "Full In-House Orchestra". The very next year The Studio's broke the "L.A. Musician's Union" and began making do with extremely small bands from then on out. My Great Uncle was one of them laid-off. Paramount was who he played for..........This particular piece was created by the second man at Warner Bros. to make the "Looney Tune's" Animation Music after "Carl stalling" passed-on, "Milt Franklin".
The best thing of all about a show like F Troop is that while you watch it, you can tell that the players were having FUN making it! Everybody was having fun...we watching, and them too. I love this show so much.
Melody was BARELY 16 when she filmed the pilot episode in early 1965. She had to fib about her real age and claimed to be "16", otherwise the studio would have had to pay for a "teacher' and have her attend "classes" inbetween filming scenes [juvenile work rules were strict in Hollywood in those days]- and they weren't willing to pay extra for that, and she wouldn't have gotten the part.
Love this show!!!! I used to know the words to the theme song and sing along with it every week. Now, sad to say, don't remember them:(. Thanks for posting this. Brought back the memories.
if you can find this on dvd buy it quick. Because it is the greatest and funniest show ever. TV today is garbage which I rarely watch. but classic tv takes you back to a better time which we wont ever get back it seems.Thankyou F Troop cast.
I remember when I was a kid watching this show in reruns. I said to some native american friends of mine; "If this is how the US Cavelry was, how did the heck did the Indians lose?"
This was such an enjoyable show to watch! Just as funny as Hogan's Heroes. Forrest Tucker and Larry Storch had such a great chemistry working together to help heap on the comedy. Hollywood today is in the toilet. We'll never see quality like this ever produced again.
Yeah, those good 'ol days when it was still OK to refer to a race of people as "redskins." Well, I'm sure they didn't mean it in an offensive way. I mean, the portrayal of native Americans was so, um... spot on?
@420squeeg yeahhhhh....i agree.......those days when in'juns...i mean native americans....called white people "pale face". i'm totally offended! when will those white boys understand!!! i can say white boy can't i? right? i just can't say black boy...right?
im 23, and I was a kid who lived nick at night, f troop, dyke van dyke, I love lucy, get smart I used to watch these all hours of the night and fall asleep watching them, this brings back memories lol
@ForzaJersey agree, i cant speak for young people but F. TROOP was a laugh and harmless... im do not think young people today would take to it unless there was a remake... actors would have to be top notch for it to be a success... i can think of 3.. third rock from the sun??? what a funny show...
Long before "Blazing Saddles" F Troop satirized fort movies and popular culture. One episode pokes fun at The Beatles and another one the eating scene in the popular movie "Tom Jones" for example and I belive it satirized much better than Brooks.
TV Land should have this on the weekend: F-Troop Hogan Heroes Batman The Adventures Of Superman Gilligan's Island Get Smart Andy Griffith Beverly Hillbillies Star Trek Bonanza The Addams Family The Munsters Dragnet
I'm only 22 but I remember as a kid this would play on Nick at Nite, sometimes late & I would lay in bed watching F Troop! I havent seen it in years & often hummed what few lyrics I remembers in my head. The good days of TV are gone! ::sigh:: ;-;
I had dinner recently with some other middle-aged baby boomers and, thanks to the influence of some margaritas, we started singing TV theme songs we all knew. (Go figure.) Anyway, while we could all remember parts of some songs and parts of others, we all knew the words to the F Troop intro. I'm wondering if the show would be as funny today as it seemed to be when I was a kid. It must be out there somewhere. Anyway, thanks for posting.
If you mean the guy behind the raise sword, it looks a lot like Andrew Duggan in a beard (see "In Like Flint" prez). But he's not credited in the show, and it could really be just anybody. Melody Patterson had just turned 17, when they shot this series. Ken Berry couldn't legally kiss her for a year. Ouch!
No,it was reported Melody was really 15 and she was the reason the show was quickly canceled. She had a lot of angry fans on her case for destroying a good show.
I didn;t know that the Melody character was the reason the show was canceled. I did know that she was 15 at the time. Can you imagine a show today where a 15 y/o was depicted as having the hots for man as old as Berry was at the time?
You should know that the stuntman who did the fall from the tower was Louie Elias, one of the greatest. Since the show commenced each episode with this stunt, it provided him with a steady bit of income. You'll note that he darn near missed landing on that buried mattress.
This was one of my favorites. Larry Storch and Forest Tucker. Did anyone see Larry in The Great Race with Tony Curtis and Natalie Wood. Ken Berry was such a clutch. And Chief Wild Eagle! Man this picture was a laugh riot. Thanks for the add, Bfleten
Somebody help me here! Back in 1974 (I was eleven) my father had just retired from the USAF and we were heading west, back to San Gabriel, CAL from Scott AFB, ILL. Along Interstate 40 or 44, I saw a billboard sign for FORT COURAGE-HOME OF F TROOP and bugged my dad until he agreed we'd stop and check it out. This was somewhere in Arizona (Houke, Houk, ????). It was an actual former US Army Cavalry post....does this landmark sound familiar to anyone? Thanks!!
Absolutely, snubbe25. I was about four when this aired in the UK and seeing the cannon going off at the start and knocking over the watchtower had me crying with laughter every time. Still does. Maybe I should get some councelling
Oh God!! I remember this show from when I was a kid watchin in on black and white TV with my dad ...I loved it ... it was staple tv time ..shame more shows these days arent like this and a bit on the innocent side :) I'm feeling nerdy now ... gonna check in on The Man From Atlantis :)
Too bad TV Land didn't pick this show up. F-Troop, Voyage to the bottem of the sea, Outer limits, twilight zone, one step beyond, Science Fiction Theater, Tom SLick, Rocky and Bullwinkle, Land of the Giants, The Time Tunnel, George of the Jungle, Doctor Doctor and anything with Tim Conway, Jonathan Winters and the girls from Petticoat Junction.
i am so sick of tv lands shows they are showing, i have written them but have been ignored, there are so many shows they can show but dont i am so sick of the brady bunch
There were only so many choices when it came to TV when I was a kid, and F Troop appealed to the quick pace of childhood slapstick. It probably is dated now, but it probably was the last show of the "Cowboys and Injuns" era, and thus was fittingly self-consciously poking fun at itself. Thanks for the post.
I knew a college drinking song in the 60's that had a short bit about an inept Indian tribe with almost the same name, except the 1st syllable was naughtier as jetttson mentions below. I strongly suspect that is the source of the name of the F-Troop tribe, with the first syllable cleaned up for TV.
Good Lord I remembered the lyrics after all these years. Occassionally singing it for my husband and friends. As far as a remake goes most of the key players are gone or way into their golden years and it would never work without them. Simplicity, clean humor and slapstick are not the components sought by todays audiences. Too bad. This was very funny stuff. And Ken Berry at his best.

Johnny Depp should sit this one out. He would maybe fit as an Indian Medicine Man as a Cameo with maybe a sly comment about the White Man.
Roadracer987654321 2 years ago 2
@Roadracer987654321 They are going to make a movie.... They should be shooting sometime next year.. And it will have a "Blazing Trails" twist to it..
RatCity2020 2 years ago
What does Blazing Trails mean ?
Kelsey Grammer when he was younger would have been perfect as Sgt. O'Rourke. randy Quaid would have been ok. but he would have made a mockery out of the Uniform. Will Ferrell would be ok as Cap't. Parmenter only. Since both men are pure idiots he would work. Johhny Depp should get a cameo only as an Indian Medicine Man. he is not loud enuf to be Col. Agarn.
Since when has a movie been planned ?

Whoops.. I mean "Blazing Saddles".. Sorry

ProudKansan08 2 years ago
According to IMDB:
Melody was born in 1949. The show came on in 65 - 67. She was 16 when it started and 18 when it ended.
There were 65 episodes.

if you can find this on dvd buy it quick.

We couldn't stop laughing.

This was such an enjoyable show to watch! Just as funny as Hogan's Heroes. Forrest Tucker and Larry Storch had such a great chemistry working together to help heap on the comedy. Hollywood today is in the toilet. We'll never see quality like this ever produced again.

TV has gone to hell since the time that they taken all of these good shows like this as well as others.
CatmanfromPA 2 years ago 35
I SECOND that.
I have reached the point where I seldom watch TV Land anymore, especially because of what has been done to some of the closing credits.
Juliaflo 2 years ago 7
@CatmanfromPA
Yeah, those good 'ol days when it was still OK to refer to a race of people as "redskins." Well, I'm sure they didn't mean it in an offensive way. I mean, the portrayal of native Americans was so, um... spot on?
420squeeg 11 months ago
@420squeeg yeahhhhh....i agree.......those days when in'juns...i mean native americans....called white people "pale face". i'm totally offended! when will those white boys understand!!! i can say white boy can't i? right? i just can't say black boy...right?
spot on?

@ForzaJersey agree, i cant speak for young people but F. TROOP was a laugh and harmless... im do not think young people today would take to it unless there was a remake... actors would have to be top notch for it to be a success... i can think of 3.. third rock from the sun??? what a funny show...

Long before "Blazing Saddles" F Troop satirized fort movies and popular culture. One episode pokes fun at The Beatles and another one the eating scene in the popular movie "Tom Jones" for example and I belive it satirized much better than Brooks.

I'm only 22 but I remember as a kid this would play on Nick at Nite, sometimes late & I would lay in bed watching F Troop! I havent seen it in years & often hummed what few lyrics I remembers in my head. The good days of TV are gone! ::sigh:: ;-;
ShinbiBelldandy 3 years ago 2
I had dinner recently with some other middle-aged baby boomers and, thanks to the influence of some margaritas, we started singing TV theme songs we all knew. (Go figure.) Anyway, while we could all remember parts of some songs and parts of others, we all knew the words to the F Troop intro. I'm wondering if the show would be as funny today as it seemed to be when I was a kid. It must be out there somewhere. Anyway, thanks for posting.

does anyone have any idea who played the captains father in the opening piliot of this great show ???
dmoriarty1966 3 years ago
If you mean the guy behind the raise sword, it looks a lot like Andrew Duggan in a beard (see "In Like Flint" prez). But he's not credited in the show, and it could really be just anybody. Melody Patterson had just turned 17, when they shot this series. Ken Berry couldn't legally kiss her for a year. Ouch!
youtub3k 3 years ago
No,it was reported Melody was really 15 and she was the reason the show was quickly canceled. She had a lot of angry fans on her case for destroying a good show.
quarqill 2 years ago
I didn;t know that the Melody character was the reason the show was canceled. I did know that she was 15 at the time. Can you imagine a show today where a 15 y/o was depicted as having the hots for man as old as Berry was at the time?
hanoc101 2 years ago
I know they do remake versions of the TV shows and movies.I doubt this show if brought back with a new cast may not be like the original.
quarqill 2 years ago
You should know that the stuntman who did the fall from the tower was Louie Elias, one of the greatest. Since the show commenced each episode with this stunt, it provided him with a steady bit of income. You'll note that he darn near missed landing on that buried mattress.

The end of the Civil War was near when quite accidentally,
A hero who sneezed abruptly seized retreat and reversed it to victory.
His medal of honor pleased and thrilled his proud little family group.
While pinning it on some blood was spilled And so it was planned he'd command F Troop.
Where Indian fights are colorful sights and nobody takes a lickin' Where pale face and redskin both turn chicken.

When killing and fighting get them down,
They know their morale can't droop.
As long as they all relax in town before they resume with a bang and a boom F Troop.

If you look closely at frame :51, you can see how the ground has a square that most likely is a cushion to break the stunt man's fall.

Thanks!!

It's in HOUCK, Arizona. Just Google "Fort Courage," you'll find it.

Dayepipes 3 years ago
Good Lord I remembered the lyrics after all these years. Occassionally singing it for my husband and friends. As far as a remake goes most of the key players are gone or way into their golden years and it would never work without them. Simplicity, clean humor and slapstick are not the components sought by todays audiences. Too bad. This was very funny stuff. And Ken Berry at his best.
