Word, I just bought "The New Don Ellis Band Goes Underground" LP on my yearly trip to New York, incredible my best find ( for eight bucks!) gonna give me a lifetime of enjoyment, can really hear the new & the old (at the time) in the record, played the version of "It's My Thing" out last Sat & real funk fans were buggin, asking me who it was etc .
Really glad to see this doc, to give me more info on the man.
This organist, Don Lee Ellis, I know of his beautiful talent. He played at different places in Long Beach, Calif and surrounding area. He also has a beautiful singing voice. Our group which consisted of about twenty five or more organist, would go to where he was performing, and enjoy his talent, until close to closing time. I have all of his albums, and still enjoy listening to them.
I heard him play the Hammond X-66 at the Coconut Grove in LA for the 1968 Theatre Organ Convention. He was sensational and George Wright practically fell out of his chair!
