  • I wonder if any of the kids in the video are still alive..

  • I'm a little weird but I wish we could find out what some of these people were doing. It would be cool. Like why was that man running? Was he late to his job? :)

  • I was but a wee little lad back then.

  • This was the year my great grand mother was born.

She passed away in 2001 at the age of 104.

  • Wow really kool

  • I would hate to be black at that time.

  • @JrG171 :thatsracist:

  • @TheSluggerShow Bow down and kiss the ring. I don't need anything else from you today.

    Thank You For you cooperation.

  • @JrG171 Bow down and Kiss my feet. I don´t need anything else from you today.

    Thank You For you cooperation

  • @TheSluggerShow Lol.

  • There will be videos showing New York 1996 in 2112....omg!!!

  • 0:04 and there was me running away from the Sears store security with a pig under my jacket.

  • wow 1896 new york was a big city wow usa had a great city and still is

  • How sure is everyone that all the people on this film are dead? Pleased to meet you hope you guess my name!!! But whats puzzling you is the nature of my game!!!;-)

  • I was interested to see a multi level office building in 1888. But I did some research and learned they were built as early as 1869.

  • no sound?

  • There is only one person living from 1896

    Search "Besse Cooper" on google

  • I should have been alive in that time.

  • Not a fatty in sight.

  • Well, are you watching this in 2012?

  • Weird! All ready had electric trolleys, but no gas engine!

Now, we want to bring it back!

    Weird stuff!!!!

  • The book was better

  • Edison made early movies where the current Macy's, NY is located. This clip is shot looking north across 34th street toward Herald Sq..The current Macy's store was built left of frame 5 yrs. later, in 1901.

  • they had video in 1896 WOW

  • I didn't see any occupiers.

  • @nholt or on a screen you hold in your hand with no wires

  • @jackdaman... Hello Jack, its the closest 'You' will ever come to time travel. I am currently on a 'Time Travel' trip called 'PPTT', or Paid Per Time Trip, i visit my friend and host here in 2011, i only came twice this year as its expensive, and waiting list looong!

I come from year 2095, i am 40 yrs old, i like 2011 as it was the last year before the 'Big S' occurred, which is what you may know or might know as the '2012' event. The 'S' stands for 'SUICIDE', which claimed 4.8 billion lives.

  • @mick55 ur from the future, well tell me some things thats in ur time

  • Nholt....your an idiot, just sayin'.

  • I'll bet they never thought we would be watching them a 100 years later on a computer.

  • @nholt

Don't be so certain. Some engineer back in 1900 guessed what the world would look like in 2000 and some predictions were remarkably accurate. The things he guessed must have sounded like total fantasy to the mind back then.

Anyways, he said something about that color photos and moving images (also in color) would be sent across the world in no time, so that if there was some war in China (his very words) then people could see those images a mere hour after in their homes.

  • Not only thet are dead which is obvious, but they are long forgotten. If they died say in the 20's or 30's, odds are probably there is nobody alive with memory of them.

Like tears in rain for god's sake.

  • i don't think they are all died curse there are some ppl there can be over 119 years old ;-) (good luck for the old ppl)

  • This is the closest we'll ever come to traveling back in time.

  • incredible

  • I remember it as it was yesterday.

  • Ian Rush at :13, crossing the tram line! What a fuckin hero!

  • 100 or 500 years from now people will look at videos of us and gasp at our very different world from theirs. If I live to any age past 100 I will remember to look at videos created in mid 80s and compare to the current world around me.

  • Whold some of those people think someone will be watching them 88 years after?? That was another world.

  • @floteamo sorry missread year.

  • @floteamo *115 year later, where'd u get 88 from!?

  • @velvetinetable True have no idea where i read some other year. :/

  • At this time people were looking forward to the 20th century and saying "wow, it's a whole new century!"

The American Civil War was closer than Vietnam is today, and Theodore Roosevelt was yet to be President.

    Long, long time ago.

  • Somehow impressive that we can look so far in the past ... thats now 115 years ago.

  • Erie

  • Wow.

  • sluts the lot of them

  • no fat

  • And they wouldn't even be able to comprehend the fact that 116 years later there'd be people watching them over the internet on our own little computers.

  • To think I would go there almost 116 years later..

  • Every single person on EARTH that was alive that day is now dead. :S

  • @rylandawe

that's not true, there's still a few ppl alive who were only infants back then.

  • @ZombifyIt Nope this video was taken on May 11th, 1896, while right now the oldest living person on earth is Besse Cooper, an American Woman born on August 26th, 1896.

The last living person who was a live on this date was Eugenie Blanchard, who was born on February 16th, 1896, and died about a year ago on November 4th, 2010.

  • @ZombifyIt You think anyone can live up to 115 years?? That may be possible but we are far from that. Today the target age is 105. You get past that and you can make the world records. Today, hardly ANYONE lives past 115 years. This was 1896 you fucking retard. Jesus Christ! People like you make the internet look bad. Do your fucking maths you ignorant fool.

  • @boffinme80

    wikipedia(dot)org/wiki/Oldest_people

you do the fucking math, retard.

  • @boffinme80

oh and of course Maria Lucimar Pereira (121), Antisa Khvichava (131), andChechen Kesi Karuyeva (116) shouldn't be counted along? al three are still alive.

call me a retard again you fucking moron.

  • @ZombifyIt

none of which would've been in NYC in 1896.

  • @tubub

Who said anything about New York? we were discussing about "every single person on EARTH", remember? now stfu.

  • @ZombifyIt

nah you were trolling on the internet like the lame ass attention whore you are.

This is a video about New York in 1896, everyone in it is dead. Who gives a fuck about really old people in Chechnya on a video about New York? Nobody.

So quit trolling and grow the fuck up.

  • @tubub

"You think anyone can live up to 115 years?? That may be possible but we are far from that. "

Your words retard, not mine. :)

stating facts is trolling nowadays? hahah, ok then, call me a troll, I shall wear the title with PRIDE.

    begone now.

  • @ZombifyIt

lol wow you're really stupid. The fact you called me a retard but couldn't put one and one together to see I'm not the other guy is stupidly sad.

I never said any of that, that was some other troll you were trolling with.

  • @tubub

yeah your right, I stand corrected. ok I'll take those words back, sorry I confused you with the other guy.

  • @tubub Cry much?

  • It's amazing how much clothing has changed in just 100 years

  • @Yepprd I know, I wish it would have stayed the same people had more style and class back then. unlike today.

  • @Yepprd Yes, but must have been a hell of it's own in the summer.

  • R.I.P all those people :(

  • i like their hats..

  • The 6 people that disliked this must be borderline retarded. How could anyone not think this is cool?!

  • I bet a lot of those people were saying chap. I dono why but I just feel like they were.

  • oh my god...every people which is in this video....they are dead..

  • @GaragyVlad I was just thinking the same

  • @GaragyVlad Along with their kids and possibly their grandkids.

  • @GaragyVlad no shit Sherlock

  • @GaragyVlad Well done Captain Obvious. People didn't live for very long back then. Did you know? -_-

  • @GaragyVlad derp we all will die someday

  • @GaragyVlad ... so are their kids.

  • @GaragyVlad bad, we shoudn die

  • @GaragyVlad

Not really, some babies in this may not be dead.

  • @johnchannetshow They would be at least 116 years old... I really don't think so.

  • @GaragyVlad well yes what so shocking about that?

  • @GaragyVlad

Unless there was a baby in the background who got to live a 114 years. It happened.

  • Somehow this is better quality than most videos on youtube.

  • Wow, so interesting to see how people dressed, the busy streets, people going about their lives, worrying about their jobs, paying bills, meeting someone for lunch...makes you think about how short our lives really are.

  • I want to go to that Pharmacy :) QC

  • Everyone in this video is dead.

  • where is 1080p ?

  • It says Edison in the beginning of the clip. Was this Thomas Edisons newest invention back then. The Image projector or they called it Moving Pictures ?

  • I wonder what the locomotive force was for those horseless vehicles. They didn't seem to be on tracks...

  • Wish I were alive in the 1900's

  • those people never would believe that random strangers would see this over 100 years later

  • i cant believe this was 1896 seriously? it has a giant city... it has tall giant buildings it has traffic and it has lights and all.... u would think this video was like year 1919 instead. But nope.. What did the city would had looked like in 1988 or below that? I thought 1896 there was non exsisting cities and there was no such city and tall skyscraper buildings...... i allways thought 1896 was more like alittle ape years if u know what i mean with rats and muddy dirty narrow dark streets.

  • @VOXS2 Dude, wtf? WiFi doesn't just get invented in 1 day (even though it still still sucks to this day), but it's a process of yyyyyears of development.

  • @VOXS2 are you stupid? do you even know what year the empire state building was finished? and look at what the people are wearing. the women didn't wear gigantic eccentric dresses that much in 1919. and how can you judge the entire city based on a single 15 second clip showing maybe about 20 people. and how many "motor cars" can you see? the trolleys are rail and horse operated.

  • @soldier716 well i just simply didn;t new that in 1896 life would be so busy and hective with cities and some what ,merchanic things moving around. I simply thought well 1896 it would some how look like most countries havnt been discovered well or that a city wouldn't look as advance as this video clip yet until lets say 1920 for example. but seen this video im suprise that in 1896 the giant city has allready been created. I didnt new that. I just come from a modern era at my end.

  • @soldier716 I just thought well 1896 would be like ladies wearing giant clothing material like the queen of 1888. And that a city doesnt exsist yet and i had the feeling that 1896 it would be a tiny convict town with some convict homes and dirt roads sort of looks with rats growling all over the place with ghetto people smurkling dity people around the streets for coins and food. I simply had the feeling 1896 was like something like the year 1860 for example. But it wasnt. Im quite suprise tho.

  • There were people in 1896!?!?

  • aww a time when Women and Minorities knew thier place, gonna have to start on that time machine I always wanted to build,

  • Hel yeah, time to make a FULL HD edition :P

  • haha, all those people are dead.

  • @mi4johns no,some of them are still alive..i have one relative in that video. he is now 187 years old

  • @amysuarez89

    lieesss!!!

  • @LucreciaStar fuck..just a matter of fact!

  • @amysuarez89

put your relative on guinness world records then i'll believe you :]

  • Dirtiest place on the east coast, wonder if it was dirty back then too!

  • Wish I lived back then

  • Shame that all these people are LONG gone by now. They died back in the 60's 70's and late 80's

  • They had trolleies back then?!

  • jajajaj ala tapa de dfined

  • Its amazing. A thousand miles away, there was a 7 year old boy in Germany who would eventually start a world war.

  • I wonder if Edison even thought for a moment that his 1896 film would eventually be watched on computer monitors in homes via digital data streams over a world wide electronic network called the Internet.

  • @2indulgent No he obviously didn't god knows he might have anyways my point it imagaine now in the same time lets say 135 years time, things taht we don't imagine, you might disagree because we can't imagine those things... strange right? Answer my question now, would u rather be born now or in the future wih the more adavnce techonology? And think about this: wheres the point where techonology stops developing?

  • @QasimAnwar135 Technology already stopped developing when Windows removed Movie Maker and everything went Beta.

  • Amazing

  • Did the guy running in almost get hit with a troley?

  • @Horserider4561 Ha! that is kinda creepy

  • Would like to live back then. Drugs were legal. There was peace at that time. the first science-fiction was just coming out. would be an exciting time to live.

  • creepy that every1 in this video is dead!

  • @Horserider4561 What even creepier is that 115 years from now someone will be saying the same thing about some video that you or I am in.

  • @sleedolfine15 Actually, mankind may not survive that long.

  • @lazurm You may be right. There are certainly many ways we humans may go kaput, however,on the other hand, life in the western world--inspite of our present bad patch,is better than at any time in human history due to a greater degree of peace, prosperty, freedom, luxury, spare time, user friendly technology, etc. We may be at the dawn of a golden age of human happiness or..we may be on the verge of self anniliation. I personally think that after we get through the present period, things will be great.

  • @sleedolfine15 I think that technology is, biologically, incompatible with successful evolution. To whit, we are now living through Earth's largest species extinction due to loss of habitat, etc. It's probable that it's too difficult to transit from survival via competition to survival via worldwide, rational cooperation.

  • @lazurm Capitalism is the system most conducive to world wide rational cooperation via free individual self interest. It is the greatest force for progress in human history and I believe that if we use this great force life will likely leap foward.

  • @sleedolfine15 I think you're greatly oversimplifying. Capitalism has its dark side too and, without protective laws, capitalism has been known to be quite destructive, of the Earth and its inhabitats.

  • @lazurm What you are calling capitaltsm is probably corporatism or what Adam Smith in THE WEALTH OF NATIONS called Mercantilism--which is a system of government privileges to selected business whereas Capitalism is simply a system of voluntary trade of privately owned goods and services from one or more owners to a new owner or owners. It is a system of self interested voluntary cooperation which is the cause of the greatest improvement in the human condition in world history

  • @sleedolfine15 I agree with you on the base cause for greatest improvements in the human condition. I was using sleedolfine15's terminology, as I assumed he meant it, in his broad definition. Still, my statement applies as any form of human behavior may have its dark side, including the definition of Capitalism as you wrote it. All free trade can have its dark side which is why, inevitably, it laws must be enacted and enforced to protect consumers from abuse.

  • @alyomaya somewhere

  • Think I saw Joan Collins at :11 in the background.

  • :15 clip probably cost dude a months pay for the film!!!

  • r they still alive

  • @XxBl3nderxX No, they are long dead.

  • And, Live from New York, it's saturday night!!

  • it's a little too modern!!!!!!

  • @GosfordAbercrombie What were you expecting? Cowboys, horses and Indians??!!!!!

  • @caporalchef4 seriously?!?!!? i was being sarc!!!

  • @GosfordAbercrombie Oh, sorry then...

  • shame there is no sound, id love to hear sounds of that era.

  • I love these old films...another era very different from ours in many ways, and in many others, very familiar.

  • New York, 1895, a city in the midst of great change...cool video.

  • this person just passed by talking on a mobile phone

  • @BarackObama231 at what time frame?

  • I found this spot on google earth. The building in the background with the arched windows is still there.

  • I always wondered how those ancient times would look on today's phototechnology! You know, we all feel it's old, and so much of it is because of the picture quality

  • 0:12 Charlie Chaplin In bowler hat??

  • if this is 1896 why r they using trolleys? werent ppl using horses still at that time?

  • @chicseeker yes, horses were still on the street. along side the trollys

  • Just think they didn't have the problems we have today. People actually communicated with each other face to face, no cell phones, no internet,. People socialized more. Women dressed better and proper then. No short shorts, breasts showing and all that. It was very nice. Crimes did exist then but lower compared to day.

  • @rbsvy91368 it depends on how you define crime. Its a crime to be poor nowadays.

  • Wasn't New York named New Amsterdamn back then or?

  • @royalsteven No, that was WAY before this...in the 1600's

  • RIP:Everyone D:
