  • You take that Water ? People tell us we couln´t take it because of bacteria .

  • @Methyl10 Yes we drank the water we came across. We filtered everything through some active coal filter which was quite a lot of work. But as I remembered it none of us suffered stomach problems.

This was back in 2007 so things might have changed. I'm not sure but we probably stopped 2-3 times in each direction to fill our bottles with water. Our loads would have been a lot heavier if we had to carry all that water.

  • @gellle Okay . I walked the trail 2006 with my daughter , but we took not enough water with us . So I want to take the Water of the small rivers , but she said " I would´nt do that , it could be dangerous " . So we returned after 8 Miles . And she was right because 2 days later I heard some People became dangerously ill and died because of a very special bacteria there in the Water . So it was a very good Idea to filter it !!!

  • ONE QUESTION. What was scarier the THE ACTUAL HIKE or.. THE RIDE GETTING to the hike?

  • @blankmj91 Hehe - I'd driven with the Puerto Ricans before so was quite comfortable on the ride :)

  • Thanks for posting! We did this hike on our honeymoon. Halfway in, covered in mud a woman in a black coctail dress, heels and huge sunhat, pops out from behind a bush looking for her companion!!!!!! We will never that out. It's soooo beautiful!!!!

  • that's a beautiful place!!! hopefully one day i'll get to do that myself!

  • Wow, he really sounds enthusiastic about being in a beautiful place like this

  • no thats extreme totally awesome

  • Awesome!

  • You are awesome :)

  • Oh man, THAT'S AWESOME!!! Thank you so much for sharing your adventure with everyone. I absolutely love Kauai, but unfortunately we didn't do this trail because we ran out of time. We chartered a boat and got a look at everything from the sea, though so I feel like I was in some of your pictures. Did you guys do any hiking in Waimea?

  • thanks for sharing

  • We just got back from our hike of the Kalalau Trail. Thanks for the movie! We were too busy not falling off cliffs to take any video for ourselves ;)

  • @JewelsDB Yeah we didn't really get much video from the scary bits because the only thing you think of is trying to cling to the cliff.

  • hey charles lee, remember when we ran the trail and that dumb redneck friend of yours brought 12 beers in a can when we asked him to bring water for the hike....what a redneck from arkansas

  • i lived there in 1984. ran the trail complete with two waterfalls in 4 hours smoking and drinking beers.... dude i know what you're talking about

  • cool hiking video! hope to see more soon...

  • nice hike, great beach thanx for posting

  • Thank you.!

Your video reminds me of the summer in Napali coast 2007.

I never forget the wonderful, exciting and beautiful place.

  • You guys have it goin' on!! In 1974 I lived in Kalalau for 6 months. No one ever found my place. From my hammock I had a straight line of sight to the red hill and would would watch for chicks coming in. I did the trail over 25 times and could do it in 3 hours flat with a 100 lb pack. When I wasn't in Kalalau, I stayed in Taylor Camp, another piece of history. Everyone should do the trail at least one time. You never forget it...... Aloha!!!!

  • you just go in the bushes. i kiked it back in 1993. it makes you want to quit your job and live on the trail and smoke pot. alot of nudist kikers on this trail. saw alot of naked chicks. no big dealwhen everyone is naked. i slept right on the trail. the camp ground on the trail has alot of mosquitos. most awesome sunset in the world. the clarity of the night air is most pristine in the world. no city lights. the night skies light up with millions of stars. awesome.retire there.

  • This is really a wonderful video..showing the beauty, majesty and power of the trail and a good group of people enjoying it. One thing I noticed is that the trail looked dry, the beach was large and your butts were not covered with red mud...so must have been a nice dry day. When I loved on Kauai, it always seemed to rain when I hiked Na Pali, and you HAD to have a hiking stick, because that mud is so damn slippery! Good times remembered...Mahalo!

  • Well done video.

  • Your husband is a smart man.

Parts of Kalalau trail are terrifying.

One moments inattention, loss of balance or tiny slip can cost you your life.

Travel light, drink water at every chance , start early as possible. It's totally worth it!

  • This is without a doubt the best hike Ive ever been on. Amazing beauty. Not technical but it can be dangerous if not careful.

  • Great video. Thank you!

  • Mike's Danish, Alberto & Fernando are Puerto Rican & Femi is Northern Irish/Nigerian. Great bunch of lads

  • wonderful video , i hiked there and lived in that valley 40 years ago when NO one was there. . pity you didnt mention the towering man made taro fields of ovaihua akua, and when you just come INTO the beach there is an ancient heaiu that you cross through that way dedicated to the TURTLE god, , the name KALALAU was actually give to that valley by the last LEPER that hid out there so he didnt have to be sent off to Molokai.

  • ironspokes - thats so interesting. Ky kids are going to hike part of the way on the trail in July. I'll print off your comments. Nice video!

  • What are the songs from the soundtrack - great vid by the way - I'm heading to Kauai in 3 days to do the trail by myself (somewhat of a spiritual journey)

  • read discripion

  • Is it possible to hike this one way or do you have to go back the way you came?

  • cool vid! I was in Kauai about three years ago and hiked about an hour along the Napali coast line. All we had was a bottle of water so we decided to head back. I plan on going again next March or April. my goal is to complete the entire hike.

  • I wanna do that too!!! lets go together?

  • sure! that would be cool!

  • when it comes to seaside---Na Pali one is the best!!! it just rocks!! I wish I would go there one day:))

  • whats the song that plays in the first few seconds??

  • Somewhere over the rainbow. By IZ.

  • thnx :)) I knew it, I just couldnt remember!!

  • I looooooved your video! Fun editing work!

I hike the first 2 miles of it. But on my next trip I definitely want to try the entire 11 miles!

Thanks for sharing! I added it to my favorites! :)

    =^..^=

  • Nice video! Thanks much for sharing. I just kayaked the Na Pali coast last week, and could see hikers moving precariously on one stretch that I think you showed in the middle of the video. It was neat to see it from your perspective.

  • Hi, what software did you use to make that video?

  • Hey RadixG I used Windows MovieMaker for the video/sound editing and Google Earth + CamStudio for the map part

  • Ok, thank you :-)

  • This video made it look easy. I've heard some pretty scary stories about mile 7. I'd like to see some footage about that. What time of year did you go as well? Looks like you had a dry hike.

  • We went in August 2007 and it wasn't easy. I was the one struggling the most and as we walked further mysurplus of taking out the camera diminished :) There were scary parts and awesome parts and it was such a great feeling of accomplishment arriving at the beach at the end.

  • aloha gelle! great video! may 2009 was the 3rd time for me to hike the trail. what you say about taking out the camera has a lot of truth to it. it takes extra effort & in some places is impossible or too dangerous to do so. if you search you'll see there aren't many pics to be found. people are too concerned with staying alive to take out the cam!

  • whuteva. declare independence then.

  • this is way cool! I am wondering is it easy to match the route on googlemap? are there any special tricks/software you need to use?

  • No its done manually roughing it in google earth so no special tricks.

  • that looked WAY to fun. Nice video

  • I wanna go there to :D

well, i need to get myself a hiking gear first then xD

  • Denmark Mike! I'm friending you. Also, this is beautiful. I'm totally jealous.

    -joint house michelle

  • My friends and I were there in '79. It looks exactly the same! Wow, this really brought back some great memories! We stayed a few days, sleeping on the beach under the stars. If you hike up into the valley it's like Paradise with a beautiful clear river and a Mango tree grove. Awesome, for sure!

  • climbing longs peak in a few months here in colorado very inspirational keep climbing high

  • Fellas,

Very impressive and inspirational video! I am planning on doing this hike in a few months and that video was pure motivation. I dug how you integrated google earth into the vid.

  • awesome documentation of ur amazing hike...scary 4 sure! i think i would have crawled and cried and turned back. Good job guys.

  • Awesome video that brought back memories I hiked the Kalalau the first time in 1972. I go back to Kauai every other summer and I always hike a portion of the trail. The farthest I have been on a day hike is to Hanakoa. I had forgotten how crazy it gets towards the end!

  • Sweet, very impressive!

  • Guyz, Brilliant! Good job! Looked a lil' scary though...with the heights and stuff...hehe...

  • Awesome......absolutely awesome!
