Standard toroids don't require shielding because of its iron core. It has low reluctance (like resistance) to the magnetic field while air has a much higher reluctance.

Now his 'rodin' coil is air cored and you almost have the same reluctance inside and outside the core. The center of the toroid will have a magnetic field as does inside the actual coil (where the iron would go in a conventional toroid)
