Right now I'm using a very cheap ($20) USB soundcard. it's not even a high quality card designed for recording, it's just a consumer-grade playback 5.1 USB soundcard that just happens to have a very clean and quiet input. since I have an external preamp, it gives me results that are good enough.
Right now, its the room i record in that causes the noise, not the gear.
I won't bother upgrading the soundcard 'till i get a better room to record in.
Thanks! im still working on my set up. I have an acer laptop. and whenever i record using snagIT or camtasia i get low volume and hissing/static. I bought a usb soundcard. the voice sound got louder but there's still strong static. I tried a cheap mic and a shure dynamic mic. results are still well below intermediate quality.
sound is always a process of finding a weakest link and upgrading. it never ends!
Have you tested the shure mic on other devices to make sure that the mic is ok? Try to find a music store or something that will let you test out yer mic on some amps to confirm that the problem lies with the soundcard.
what mic is that? RODE NT1A? if so then an XLR to USB from Shure or a Centrance adapter/interface is pretty good thats good but for untreated rooms try the Heli PR40 as its dynamic doesnt need power and is used by Leo Laporte Very Good - good videos you deserve MANY MORE HITS THAN THIS
I'm not familiar with imic, i will have to look into it.
The mic in this video is an Apex 435 large-diaphragm condenser. It's very cheap, but records spoken word vocals very nicely.
the only dynamic mic I own is is an SM58, which is actually pretty good in a crappy recording environment, since it hides background noise very well. I used it to record the narration of my "brain candy" and "body room" videos.
I'm not a fan of most USB mics, since they are usually only 16-bit
Very good video! I've made a cool video with cool fx , and sound fx.. Just when I talk , it looks ike I talk like an old man.. Thank you very much!!

I know. seconds before shooting, I moved the mic closer, and I forgot to reset the output levels.
