  • I dont care what they say if u play a part 24/7 for 18 months that is u

  • lol he is not on drugs. it's a crazy interview.

  • I think both men were hilarious. I loved it. I always enjoy Joaquin. :)

  • Absolutely brilliant.

  • They say he faked it but that was a cover up

  • @iraqattacker lol noooooo, haha it was a mockumentary.

  • Comment removed

  • It's funnier knowing he was faking.

  • Dang Joaquin is the best actor known to man. That would be impossibly hard!

  • His smirk shines through at 2:40. This man is a master troll.

  • dave, i want to cry , in fact i am crying and trying to understand your critical review of phoenix on drugs... This is a profound exploitation of someone who has had a genuine shift in his personal politics, albeit for t he genuine audience response! if not for the totally ignorant portrayal of a man scorned by the very society he helped to create?

  • @togaman484 dude joaquin was acting, it was all a big joke!

  • if this is HD than normal quality must be 8-bit to you

  • And HD is your only problem?? Not the name "Phoenix on drugs"!!?? Retard burninginfo

  • Its an old Johhny Carson BIT

  • it was a stunt revealed in his documentary lol

  • I can't believe people really think Joaquin is on drugs, or would ever mess with the shit. Joaquin has seen first hand the horrors of drugs.

  • @Yogiri it was a stunt revealed in his documentary lol

  • its funny when letterman says "there is nobody really better at acting than you are" because ironically, this is ALL an act on Joaquins part and he fools everyone, even David Letterman, who is being a suble asshole this entire interview.

  • 1) he wasnt on drugs 2) this isn't hd

  • now that we know this was fake on Joaquin's part it does seem rather curious when he takes his sunglasses off at the very end to shake letterman's hand. makes me wonder if dave was also in on the rouse?!

  • Comment removed

  • @Arythmnmaker1 joaquin punked letterman, you and everybody by pulling this stunt...vulnerable? he could of stayed home....but it was his bit and letterman addressed someone that was not up to be on his show.

did joaquin look like he was interested in anything ..no ...why it was a bit.

now joaquin owes letterman nice money for putting letterman in his documentary...I'm Still Here.

personally i thought joaquin handled it like he wanted it to go.....odd ball

  • @Vulturefood No Joaquin got punked. What happened with his "documentary". Everybody knew it was a hoax. He should have shut it down after, but they just kept denying it.

  • I THINK YOU LOST THE " P " LETTER BECAUSE YOU WANTED TO SAY HIGH PATHETIC INSTEAD OF HIGH DIGITAL OR WHATEVER IT MEANS !!

  • I didnt get the farrah fawcett comment at the end lol

  • @ylem19867 when farrah was on the show years ago she was stoned and acting very odd. hence letterman saying they owe her an apology because he though Joaquin was way worse!

  • @macleanandy Ha I guess you were right all along!

  • Letterman looks like such a fool now!

  • but letterman wasn't in on it

  • Comment removed

  • this is Romanian HD :-)

  • how did he not laugh lol

  • Letterman is an asshole. And he isn't funny.

  • @ctobncsu He is hilarious.

  • Is that Zach Galifianakis?

  • Fake, he admited that he wasn't on drugs.

  • No way Phoenix should pay Letterman a cent. Obnoxious for L to even suggest it. Andy Kaufman did the same kind of thing, so if someone puts Dave on he has to pay Dave? The talk shows have always been a document of record for the lives of many celebrities. Does anyone who shows such footage now have to pay Dave?

  • Stoned.

  • yea he was definitely on drugs

  • The name of this video is funnier than Joaquin's little act. First of all, he's clearly NOT on drugs. Secondly, he's obviously hamming it up. He breaks character many times throughout the interview, and the end of it is the clincher.

  • pretentious? he was in the middle of playing out a performance?

isn't it funny how a year ago so many people were thinking it was hilarious - laughing at this guy that, for all we knew at the time, looked as if he was in a bad place.

and now we all know it was a trick on the media...lots of critics think the movie is disgusting and shows a lack of respect for people with depression and mental issues etc, funny how fickle people can be.

  • @foofighterjct It is disrespectful, if not to those people in general, than to his late brother River, who had demons that cost him his life. Sorry, but Joaquim's little practical joke isn't funny when you consider that he may have exploited his brother's legacy to make people believe this was for real.

  • @phillydisco he mocked his friend ledger

  • You can see him try not to smile a couple times.. great actor.

  • You can see him try not to smile a couple times.. great actor.

  • He wasn't on drugs, he was being an 'artist' and a pretentious cunt.

Drugs usually have better results than this.

  • @eezysqueezy He is acting. It was all a hoax. Let's see you not act like such a faggot, maybe you'll win an oscar

  • @rreynolds23 Yeah he was acting....and the result was shit. Compare this with something like Borat and tell me this movie won't suck more than Paris Hilton on a night out.

  • @eezysqueezy Yes, I've heard it was a shitty movie, and that's why their now trying to go around apologizing to people admitting it was a hoax. It was stupid then, it's stupid now. Letterman knew what was going on. He's still playing along.

  • @phillydisco If you're gonna do this type of thing then at least do it well. Like Sacha Baron Cohen. This is a shambolic mess and Letterman knows it.

  • @eezysqueezy I agree. This will only become a cult film because of how bad it is.

  • @eezysqueezy Letterman had no idea which is what he admitted to. Letterman is one of the worst interviewres on television.

  • Letterman is an a-hole!!!! So glad it was just for a movie. But it goes to show people like stomping on other when they are the weakest!!!!!!

  • @christi116 Letterman never treats his guests badly, even when they act badly. That is one clue that he was in on it.

  • he was not on drugs, it was an act for his movie, knew it all along, how can tv personalities of lettermans character be fooled too, or maybe he was in on the act, ot maybe production crew were/werent?

  • @burninginfo how much of a fuckwad do you feel like for making baseless accusation that have been proving terribly inaccurate. Oh yea. this wouldn't be considered HD to Ray Charles

  • JOAQUIN NOS ENGAÑASTES A TODOS JA JA HASTA YO ME CREI ERES UN GRAN ARTISTA

  • negged for not being HD

  • HD???....... Bollocks

  • I knew it was fake because at the end Joaquin takes off his sunglasses and says "Good job" to Dave. Love him though.

  • Been confirmed by both letterman and Phoenix that this was a hoax and both parties knew about it before the interview. Excellent acting job by both on this.

  • @neuropharma Where did you hear this was confirmed?

  • @Dreamflower6 It was confirmed yesterday, I think, by Casey Affleck.

  • @neuropharma Now that we know it's a hoax you can kind of tell from Letterman's behaviour that he was in on it. Usually, he'd be a lot more uncomfortable in a situation like that. Brilliant on both their parts.

  • He's a solid actor. I would love to have seen the pre-production meeting for this appearance.

  • Hoax or no, this interview is hilarious!! The best part is around the 7:20 when Letterman says "You know that seems unlikely" and then starts laughing.

  • How he didn't chuckle and give himself away, I don't know. You win that many awards for acting and go on Letterman to pull a hoax on the host. When it got to the "fun stories" part it almost seemed like Letterman had to or should have known.

  • @robmesqtx Um, He DID chuckle...several times. He is a bad actor. Couldn't even keep a stupid act like this up without laughing several times.

  • @logtree6 Yeah, he chuckled, but he made it work.

  • He isn't on drugs. To think he was, you'd have to know absolutely nothing about drugs or about Joaquin Phoenix.

And Letterman obviously isn't in on it. He knows he's being fucked with, and he's playing along a bit while also poking back.

  • I hope he goes back to doing movies more often. He was.. sorry, he "IS" a great actor

  • Cause it was planned, and Letterman & co were in on it, otherwise the camera couldn`t have found his thumb that quickly (and clear) after Phoenix mentioned it. And I also believe the Farrah Fawcett (RIP) line was improvised, cause it caught Phoenix a little off guard - he gave it away with a little smile. 11th. of February - thats sweeps periode, isn`t it? Nice little trick to get lots of viewers the following nights - congrats. Now I`m gonna check out the Farrah Fawcett clip!

  • This was all planned... even Letterman is in on this... That's why he's coming back on the show...

  • What's he taking it sure has some big side affects. Its horse tranquilisers heroin or crack coke or maybe a mixture? I am pleased I dont take none of that shix! Or anything to ever make me like this. You can keep your fame and money if this is what it does to you!!! Hope he gets better soon. Chill dude! We love you Joaquin!!!

  • this isn't HD asshole

  • @Pun4422 Who cares?

  • @Pun4422 I said the same thing LOL

  • I dont think its funny.

  • HD my ass. My cellphone takes higher quality video.

  • I can't imagine anyone LESS interesting to make a documentary about, be it a hoax or the real thing. He's a freaky asswipe. Boring, ugly, sick in the head.

  • I doubt he was on drugs but it would be a shame if he was to go out like his brother. I personally think Joaquin is a phenomenal actor.

  • "Joaquin, i'm sorry you couldn't be here tonight""we owe an apology to Farrah Fawcett"

  • In addition to my last comment, I think that if he was as dangerously unbalanced as he seemed to be, why would he still be there after the commercial break? If I'd been Letterman, I would have had Phoenix removed by security at the first possible opportunity. My instincts tell me that Letterman was in on this as well; there's something about his demeanor in the intro that strikes me that he was setting us and the live audience up. Or....maybe I'm a hard-bitten cynic!

  • This all seems a bit bogus to me. Didn't Letterman see him backstage, or did no one warn him? I think this was all in preparation for the hoax of a movie "I'm Still Here" which has been perpetrated on the American public. It even seems like the audience is on this, since they are laughing so much. If I'd been sitting in the auditorium, I would have been in stunned silence, and not laughing uproariously.

  • Oh, please! So what, if Joaquin is under the influence. Almost 90% of HollyWEIRD abuses drugs and the other 10% who doesn't are the child actors.

  • this is actually a little scary though

im still here is a brutal and disturbing film. not to mention it seems to 100% real

  • @Bonkskey ~ The concensus is that "I'm Still Here" is totally NOT real, but a major hoax.

  • @edwardjames50 i mean, maybe it is but im surprisingly more comfortable believing it's real

  • @edwardjames50 its still up to debate. I haven't seen it but I want too, badly.

  • Look, we can argue all day whether he's for real or not. It doesn't really matter. It's ENTERTAINMENT. That's the REAL point here.

  • So fake. You can see during those last few seconds, he takes off his sunglasses and starts talking to Dave out of this character.

  • @smurfornge

yes, he will ruin his whole act by mistacingly talk to dave after the show when he thinks theyre off camera...

  • What a waste.....

  • man, poor dude is so damn high out of his mind. it's so difficult to watch...why would he even book an interview when he is clearly incapable of uttering a complete sentence that makes sense... i'm thinking it's a crack high, doesn't look like heroin, but definitely serious drug problems going on here.

  • @ButtMasterOO The news been broken...Letterman was in on it...We all knew that from the start, except YOU!!! How come "Thats too bad"

  • Look people, Juaquin is not on Heroin or anything else out of the ordinary here. This is a publicity stunt, likely thought up shortly after he and his current collaborators came up with the 'I'm Still Here' premise and concept and began working on it. This is the epitome of viral marketing. Even Letterman breaks down laughing hysterically at one point, because this is true comic genius. I am also betting that this is one of the most popular Letterman episodes in recent times.

  • @Jabrookah you have clearly never seen anyone high, particularly on crack in this case. no sense of humor, nervous, fearful to speak, sluggish words, paranoid.

  • Genious! :D

  • Heroin

  • just watching this made me uncomfortable! that was so awkward.

  • He's not stoned, this is not a joke, that's just how he is, now is all of you idiots don't and/or can't understand that, well too bad.

  • you really think that? its just he appeared on Letterman before and he never acted like this before

  • he may have an odd personality, but joaquin phoenix is one of the best actors i've ever seen... he was on a whole nother level in gladiator...

  • @Representt

and also i wouldn't be surprised if this thing indeed is a hoax. look at his past interview. maybe this was a bet, a prank, who knows. all i know is that he is a good enough actor to pull this off...

  • @Representt I am betting this is some sort of hoax as well. You can see him almost crack a smile several times. Then, he looks down to get back into character.

Don't get me wrong...I am sure he is a rather strange person to begin with.

  • damn i feel bad for david how could he put up with that crap

  • If you think Juaquin's disturbing new creative direction into hip-hop music (Rap to those over the age of 35) and he even more disturbing personality change is a big hoax, think again. Listen to the 2/12/09 Newsweek audio interview with Juaquin under Related videos. People drop long time professions and move on to another all the time when they hit burn-out, but they generally dont undergo an intire personality change He's SMACKED up or having a break-down, or both. I wish it was a hoax.

  • 9:10 he took the gum out! =p hahahaha

    only means two things,

    1) if it's a hoax, he just proved that by taking the gum back out

    2) if it's not a hoax, well... then he just showed the world that he chews gum that were stuck under tables

  • Ahhh ... brings back memories of the appearances by Brother Theodore. Although, come to think of it, he was mainstream compared to this!

  • he's acting like he's on drugs, even though his brother died of a drug overdose in his arms........weird

  • He's going to end up like his brother.

  • this brings back memories of me talking to my english teacher.....

  • Is this some kind of attack on druggies?

  • that movie looked like shit

    lol

  • but it's one of the very few movies out now that's getting great reviews. i'm gonna check it out tonight. i don't think it looks like shit.

  • Fuck Letterman, Fuck the audience, this aint no joke, he's following in River's footsteps.

  • Tolerance is Suicide.

    resist (dot) com

  • Look at him just geeking out hat a joke fuck ups like him give drugs a bad name what a fuck up geekin on tv stupid hear lip fuck

  • Drugs and typing don't mix.

  • Little doped much?

  • Completely in character. This was set up and staged.

  • The only thing more idiotic than joaquin's drugged up appearance on Letterman...are these morons here who think it's some kind of brilliant acting job.

You people are the same morons who watch a dog take a shit and think it's "performance art"!

  • damn dis white cracka is on crack hahaha! whadda champ fo sho

  • LOL, Letterman handled himself great.

  • You mothaphuckas say he's faking it, the dude is clearly out of it. He reminds me of Jim Morrison before he died. Everyone wont be laughing when he's gone.

  • Good one, Joaquin. Fire Paul Schaeffer he is is so damn annoying.

  • I heard so much about this before I saw the video, and after I saw it I don't see why it was such a big deal...They knew exactly what what's going on. Joaquin was just on character. What's the BIG DEAL??

  • the big deal is that a shitload of people think it's real and i guess that's good for Joaquin cause that's what he wanted. people can be so naive sometimes.

  • actually he was totally NOT on drugs. just acted that whole shit out and Letterman knew about it and agreed to play along. this has been accounted by several people that were in the audience that day. plus the dude has cameras following him everywhere he goes. come on. they need a lot of footage to make the documentary. research before you make blanketed statements.

  • poor bugger is stoned out of his mind, what mind he has LOL

  • i wonder what Joaquin Phoenix said to dave letterman right at the end when he shook his hand

  • I was just gonna ask that same question. He also took of his glasses.

  • thank you. and good job.

  • Lol that was so weirdd. But apparently it's staged for some..documentary he and his brother's doing? Hmmmh.

  • yes. yes it is.

  • his brother was River Phoenix, he's dead

  • Pathetic!

  • hes faking in so he can get into his character for his next movie

  • I sincerely hope it's an act like the kind of thing Andy Kaufman used to do and it's all going to be a joke. Otherwise he needs some help. Something's up.

But of course Dave had to be his usual jag-self.

  • THINK you idiots. THINK.

Joaquin became much more alert after the interview, he took of his glasses to shake Letterman's hand. if he was really as cold and fucked up as people thought he was in the interview, then he would have left his sunglasses on and stayed in his chair like most guests do. COME ON. how much more proof do you need? Think. It's so obvious. Don't be fooled and get on the whole 'oh he needs help' bandwagon. Think for yourself. You're smarter than letting the media think 4 U.

  • ur an idiot

  • how exactly am i an idiot you fuck? for not being gullible?

expect a fucked up message when the joke is out. you're a fucker.

  • that was awkward!

  • I don't think Letterman would poke so much fun at him if he actually thought that Joaquin was as "out of it" as he seemed to the audience. I don't know what Joaquin's reason for acting this way could be (besides getting attention; there's better ways to do that), but I do think that he was just acting. He does deserve some respect for doing it so well. He could very well be high and I can't even tell the difference.

  • I want whatever drugs he's on!

  • What's with the Farrah Fawcett line? Can anyone explain?

  • Letterman said before Farah Fawcett was the worst interview he'd ever done.

  • Looks as he may of been born again???

  • sad

  • seriously, im usually good at judging how people act, but i have no idea whether he was faking it or not. Hes either an amazing actor or a heroin addict, and i think im gonna have to go with heroin 51-49 %

  • that only proves that he's got you fooled. have a fun feeling like an idiot once you find out the truth.

  • Gold

  • Hey guys.

I was on the set Wednesday evening and Joaquin was very much okay. After he got from his chair, he stood talking to David for about a minute and then proceeded to wave to the audience as he walked off the stage. He had a smile on his face and seemed in a good mood. Apparently, he's playing some character for a movie or something, at least that's what I heard. But I'm just relieved to find out that he's really just playing the character 24/7.

Nevertheless, it's funny to see again.

  • I think it's an act--at the end Dave tells him "good job" and Joaquin takes his sunglasses off quick as if taking off a costume. I think we'll find out someday it was a put on.

  • Agreed Phoenix is a bit out of the norm, but Letterman can be a dick just to get a laugh and sheep mentality of the crowd eats it up. Kind of annoying.

  • Why are people laughing so much?

  • take a wild guess...

    because it's AN ACT!!!

AN ACT PEOPLE. GET IT THROUGH YOUR HEADS!

  • lol, this was soo funny. There was a guy on the late late show who did the same thing, but I don't think anyone noticed

  • lol, maybe he's joking.

  • who let him out of the house with that hair? he needs a handler.. i would like to take this opportunity to official announce that i would love to personally handle joaquin phoenix... he's hot... but i would shave that beard!

  • if you love 5 star vids you'll love mine

  • I wonder what he said to Dave right at the end...

  • it's a bit irrelevant, what matters more is how alert he got out of a sudden at the end.

  • I heard he's doing a mockumentary...hence the appearance...and apprently he's collaborating with Casey Afleck who was in the audience when he was on Letterman.
