  • Hey, there's Bruce Willis in the back!!

  • Just did this for my monologue in Drama, got a standing ovation, thank you Paul Newman for giving me such a great performance to emulate <3

  • @tensazol I Hope You Die in a Fire very slowly this week. DIE PIG DIE!!

  • I BELIEVE THERE IS JUSTICE IN OUR HEARTS!

  • Paul Newman's greatest scene!

  • I've heard that Tobin Bell and Bruce Willis have cameos in this scene... Can anyone spot them out for me?

  • @Da666ManIsBak

I think he's at the right of the image, with a grey jacket, looking at the front. Behind the man with the red tie.

  • One shot, one take, one incredible performance.

  • is true mister paul... is true

  • This rocks! It's a lesson not only from the Bible but from AA meetings

  • Another great scene in this movie is when he goes to take pictures of the woman in the coma and then stops and realizes what has really become of him (ambulance chasing alcoholic). I think it's here he changes.

  • It's weird seeing Bruce Willis with hair. Oh, and Paul Newman is great.

  • one of my favorite scene's of all time

  • There are a handful of films that when I'm flipping through the channel's and it's on, I stops there and I watch the rest of it. This is one of them. It took me several viewings before I realized how great this summation is and I often think of it whenever there's some sort of legal injustice in the world.

  • Such an underrated movie

  • Since no one has the sense to do it, YT should automatically end every post to every video with "In my opinion"....IMO

  • As we praise this scene, let's remember that Galvin lucks into a favorable verdict. Without that admitting nurse, his case is dead in the water. And the comatose woman's relatives get zilch. Great luck, Galvin!

  • 2nd best scene in the flick. The best is when he hits laura in the bar. Newman should have won the Oscar for this.however, Kingsley was great in Ghandi...maybe a tie.

  • One shot - no cuts. Bravo Paul Newman!

  • This is what we're up against in trying to put that illegal alien,Obama,in jail where he belongs, even though we have a copy as well. The NORDYKE twins prove that he's a liar.

  • the man in the jury to the right with the yellow shirt and tie (that seems to have a black stripe running through it) is Bruce Willis.

  • @Bustagroov Yes you right

  • Paul Newman hit it out of the park in this scene. Completely from the heart with no unnecessary histrionics or overacting. It puts tears in my eyes every time I see it.

  • Acting is so over rated! Over paid babies!

  • @stoogman Go Fuck Yourself...

  • @MusicWriter1965

    mummy's calling, dinners ready.

  • RIP, Mr. Lumet

  • @ChrisPawelski

Agreed. A brilliant, scene-stealing performance by Willis. Newman must have been furious at being acted off the screen in his most important monologue scene, no wonder they switched to a close up in the final shot. After that, Willis mysteriously disappears from the close up of the two relatives directly in front of him, denying us the climactic, iconic Die-Hard style smirk straight into the camera.

  • @Beliasarius you've got to be fucking kidding me. To rank any Willis performance as above any Newman performance, you either have to be a savage fucking retard or some under-35 infant who doesn't have enough knolwedge of great cinema to make an informed assessment. Newman "was acted off the screen" by Willis? Christ, you're a slobbering, slack-jawed fucking retard with all your taste in your filthy fucking ass. Smirking is not acting. Go blow your brains out and make America smarter

  • I just watched this movie, and all I can say is it is one of the greatest I've seen in a long time..I felt for Paul Newman's character..Doing what is right is usually the hardest thing to do. Quoted by Micheal Caine in "Weather Man". Thanks for the suggestion of " To Kill a Mockingbird"..picking that one up next..

  • My favorite Lumet (and that's saying a lot).

  • Paul Newman= AWESOME!

  • my favorite movie... great acting .. a movie with a great lesson of life, redemption and hope

  • "You know, so much of the time we're just lost--say "Please God, tell us what is right, tell us what is true." [I mean] there is no justice, there.... The rich win, the poor are powerless. We become tired of hearing people lie. [And] after time we become dead...a little dead. We think of ourselves as victims and we become victims. We become... we become weak. We doubt ourselves, we doubt our beliefs, we doubt our institutions, and we doubt the law. Well today you are the law. You--are--the law."

  • Bruce Willis to the upper right next to the guy with the mustache. An incredible performance on his part.

  • @ChrisPawelski I concur...

  • This is superb stuff, but the summations mentioned by dakotajim are -- forgive me -- garbage. For a great courtroom summation, see To Kill a Mockingbird (Peck) or Breaker Morant (Jack Thompson) or Compulsion (Orson Welles). I do that for a living. One time I even quoted a line from Star Trek. Oh -- does everyone see Bruce Willis in the courtroom with his silly haircut?

  • This is a tremendous yet under-rated (I think) film. However another great courtroom moment I can think of is A Few Good Men where Tom Cruise decides to push Jack Nicholson to admit that he ordered a code red. Fantastically acted by them both - whilst not strictly a summation scene, one that was well deserved a mention I think. :)

  • @Mancunian6 Tom Cruise is a no-talent smirking little bitch. For you to even mention him in the same sentence as Newman proves what a ferocious fucking retard you are. Get a cinematic education and stop embarrasing yourself

  • One of the first movie of Bruce Willis (sitting in the background wearing tan shirt)

  • It always helps the closing argument when you have one of the best faces ever slapped on the front of a human being's skull by a gracious creator. It also tends to improve results when you have that smooth and melodious voice. Lawyers with barely a shred of brains or skill have made fortunes with just such tools. Great clip thanks for posting.

  • Paul played a drunk and an attorney in this film as good as it gets.

  • We have seen this type is scene in various movies & television shows, BUT Mr. Paul Newman proves here why he is one of the greatest actors of the silver screen. He will be dearly missed, but his performances will live on forever...

  • Beautiful, poignant summation. And delivered with such grace and conviction. Paul Newman, one of the finest actors of his generation, thank you.

  • watch bowling for columbine, mr moore has some good points in that movie.

  • Call 1-800-HATESPAM, talk to a real nut-job about twaddle for hours, feel stupid yet?

  • There are two other great summations in movies that are equal to this scene. Scent of A Woman where Pacino defends the kid in front of the school committee and JFK where Kostner does his interpertation of Jim Garrison where he even breaks when he talks of our fallen king. Hey Youtubers out there do you agree or can you add any more, what say you!!

  • I like the one in 'and justice for all' by Pacino also. Thanks for the tip

  • hey since you like this one I'm going to send my playlist that includes a bunch of other great movies scenes, JIMMY

  • @dakotajim11378 Don't forget the summation at the end of "To Kill a Mockingbird".

  • @Atlasfilms08 Agaoodone, and Paul Newman's, where he's a former alcoholic lawyer and defends a brain dead gal and wins at the end countless monies over the amount ogrinally sought where he had no chance up against a crooked high priced church lawyer portrayed by James Mason, thanks for your imput, ride on!!!

  • @dakotajim11378 Inherit the Wind, A Time to Kill, Compulsion, To Kill A Mockingbird

  • @Pandonodrim what we have here, is a failure to communicate, lol you one hip dude, maybe we go to the movies one day, you bring the booze, I bring the pop corn and ice cream and then we discuss politics and religion

  • @dakotajim11378 lol, f yes.

  • @dakotajim11378 Don't forget Gregory Peck in "To Kill a Mockingbird"!

  • @dakotajim11378 - I have to go with Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird

  • @dakotajim11378 What about To Kill a Mockingbird?

  • @dakotajim11378 I disagree. Atticus Finch's (Gregory Peck's) summation in To Kill a Mockingbird was more powerful than Costner's in JFK, especially since we have since come to learn that Garrison's "theory" has been across-the-board discredited. Plus, Garrison didn't actually make the final summation in that trial -- it was one of the ADA's. Stone made a fascinating, entertaining film, but the fact that it was largely fiction and discredited speculation makes it less compelling in retrospect

  • @dakotajim11378 Oh, you have to add Gregory Peck in "To Kill a Mockingbird."

  • @unencumberedfiddler most definitely

  • @dakotajim11378 The Opening argument in "And Justice For All" with Pacino.....outstanding......

  • @dakotajim11378 Anthony Hopkins in AMISTAD.The best speech ever

  • one of the great summation speeches, perfect timing....ranks with Peck in Mockingbird.

  • Just watched the film for the first time. What a great performance by Mr. Paul Newman. Unforgettable.

  • Tobin Bell who plays Jigsaw in the Saw series is sitting next to Bruce Willis.

  • wooops ok never mind u already know!!

  • i've been told the guy in the top right at 2:37 is bruce willis... havent watched it on a proper screen since hearing this, but i can definitely see it!

  • It sure is!

  • Ya, that's Willis... sitting on a butt plug as usual.

  • !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!????

  • These are a few precious minutes of same of the finest filmwork and acting of our time. Beyond the grave, Paul Newman speaks to us of our world today

  • I too believe there is justice in our hearts.Thank you Paul for truly letting people might want to know what a drunk feels like .Splendid post.

  • RIP Paul... you will be missed by many.

  • Yes not only have we lost a great actor but a truly great humanitarian.

  • Yup grandcosmo, exactly right, a 27 year old aspiring actor called Bruce Willis can be seen almost the whole way through this video! When the camera zooms in, you get a better view - about 2:35 has a good shot of him, behind the man and woman on the right, he has a yellowish shirt and grey suit on! And hair!

  • I'm glad this movie was rated in the recent top-5 for Legal Thrillers. This is such an eloquent speech/summation. For me it really points to Man's belief/question about the existence of God or a God-nature. Thanks for posting.

  • This movie is dope.

  • The guy in the gray suit and yellow shirt sitting in the gallery between the two plaintiffs is Bruce Willis. He worked as an extra in this scene.

  • Great set of clips. My favorites include the Rainmaker, 12 Angry Men, and of course My Cousin Vinnie. Great job! Jeff

  • its just a movie but once in awhile some hollywood writer writes a scene that is apocryphal and rings bells,,,pushes buttons, hollywood preaches best when it does so in a low key manner,,,,hard to find 20 yrs later.

  • The word apocryphal doesn't mean what you think it means.

  • In reality, even if the jury finds the doctors liable, the defendants would win on a motion for a judgment notwithstanding the verdict because the disputable facts were stricken from the record. The law is the law.

  • the law is an ass,,,,,wm shakespeare!

  • Movies take liberties with the law. In "A Few Good Men", the Marines are convicted of Conduct Unbecoming a Marine, but no such crime exists. It is Conduct Unbecoming an Officer, but they were not officers. In this movie, the way the rebuttal witness was presented was stupid. The judge's ruling that her testimony be stricken was stupid and wrong. Plus, the plaintiff would win on appeal because the defense attorney planted a spy in Newman's office

  • The law may be the law but the law is not "Law" and the law certainly does not equate with "justice". As Frank Galvin says in his summation, it is merely a means for men to express their "desire and prayer to be just". Sidney Lummet, through his poetic license, gets the fundamental jurisprudence right. But I can tell that you, dparad22, will be a good lawyer.

  • yeah, but the 'disputable facts' would have won on appeal as admissible (confession).

  • For godsake's it's a movie. A place to escape why don't you just let it be that and enjoy.....

  • That's why there is a jury system. THEY are the law. In this case, it was good. In the OJ Simp trial, it was bad.

  • this movie made me a militant populist.

  • Sorry. I meant to say: "Beautiful scene. Thank you for posting this."

  • Beautiful Scene. Thank you posting this.

  • paul newman es el mejor, PAUL NEWMAN, THE BEST.

  • This movie inspired me to go to law school

  • This is excellent! Thank you very much for posting this.
