I get my license in a few weeks and I'm looking into getting a Forester or an Outback and doing some light off roading. Would you suggest a stick or automatic? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks. And nice video, looks like fun!

What tyres were you running? What tyre pressure?

You can tell from the lack of bulging sidewalls, that the tyres had too much air.

If you mess those two things up, any car will be hopeless. Even my rally bike, which is designed to go through that stuff at highway speeds, is completely useless in mud when i'm running road tyres at high pressure.

A good all wheel drive system is as good or better than 4WD. You can clearly see the diff is properly locked based on how the wheels are spinning.

The Forester is AWD or you actually choose 4x4 High or Low and that stuff? I bought a Impreza WRX and people keeps telling me that "that's not an off-road vehicle"

The people telling you that is not an of-road vehicle are right. Even the Subaru manual clearly states "Not for Off-Road Use." They don't have a high or low range transfer case and no underside protection. I would just stick to muddy trails.

there's no 4X4 low. and no, a wrx isn't an offroad vehicle because the suspension and differentials and so on have been designed for racing. the wrx doesn't have much ground clearance either.

@drummerblade wrx stands for world rally racing...they use it for off road on a dirt track but nothing like climbing rocks or anything.

@Skillow It's not an off road vehicle, mainly because of clearance, but the open diffs aren't crash hot either. The Forester is AWD - constant system - in some manual gearboxes they have a lo range available too, but this isn't much better than the auto box anyway

Hello, nice nice . . i am planing to buy this car. Can you tell if your model the XT (with turbo) has a Low gear shift! If not how does your car handle with the clucth in off-road situations, like mud and sand when you get stuck. Because i know the XT version doesn't have a Low gear ratio switch, unless you have an Automatic transmission on your car. Good job though.

no manual turbo forester has low range gearbox it just has shit loads of torque

low range is not just for extra torque, it helps reduce slip too which is why I'm so angry at subaru for not even haveing an option for it since like 1990
