Wild Horse Annie, ( Valma B. Johnston ) took the time to write to me, back in 1970, when I was just 12 and when she lived in Tucson. Her self-sacrifice, gave America's Wild Mustangs a voice and shut down the meat hunters and Government supporters of this evil trade. Without her legacy, these stunningly beautiful animals would be gone forever from your wilderness. I still have her letter and book " Mustang Wild Spirit of America' and treasure both. Please give her your support. Mark NZ

If people realized that eating meat daily is extremely unhealthy to ourselves as well as our entire planet, their would be allot less meat farming. Meat farming is one of the biggest wastes of natural resources that the "authorities" of our species is committed to, because its currently lucrative!
No, Eating Meat daily does not make you stronger, more macho, tougher etc. . . all it does is give you a basketball shaped belly, outrageous gas and horrid bowel movements, yeah that's real sexy.
@thejayeldraco Absolutely, my friend! Using one's stomach as a graveyard for the flesh of tortured livestock animals is the most unhealthy thing a person can do.
@howdidienduphere Thanks, don't get me wrong, I'm not a strict vegetarian, and I'm not saying everyone should be. I certainly do not eat meat daily. Most of my diet over the last few years has become fruit, veggies and starches. I definitely see how much better off I am because of it. When I do it meat, it's generally because someone offered it to me and I don't want to waste it. I enjoy the occasional taste of a SMALL portion, but I leave it at that.
Take some newcomer humans off the range and their overpopulated-overgrazing cattle before you take the wild horse out of it's home where it's lived for a thousand years.
If any of you think our so called president cares about this abuse? You are very wrong! Every time we turn around, he is destroying what is good about our country. Research the facts. Instead, contact your state senate members, you'll get better results with them. I hope it's not too late to save our American heritage with our wild horses.
whats wrong with people?america was a law againts anmal crulty and yet they are the ones breaking it! if we all whant to make a difference lets write letters to the senate and president! lets take a stand for the animals that cant! whos with me?
@123horseluva I'm with you. Honestly it's really disgusting what we are doing with our native animals, and then letting non native ones take over. Cow and sheep are not native to North America, nor are even chickens. Cows and sheep came with the Europeans. This is the mustang land. Leave them be
The horses are our heritage and need to be protected from human predators. Horses were not intended to be part of the human food chain. They are God's most beautiful of all creatures. Let us all preserve them!
It's time to place rules and regulations on the BLM themselves. I am convinced that they DO NOT have the well being of the horses at hand. Their tactics and practices are a disgrace to all that is humane and logical. They make a mockery of the very thing they are suppose to represent.
Perhaps we should clarify a few points on this subject:
First, truly native wild NA horses went extinct after the last Ice Age, along with their natural predators. The wild horses you see today are the descendants of Spanish horses from Mr. Colombus and his compatriots.
Proper management is needed for any population that grows exponentially in the absence of natural predators, especially when that population is damaging range land.
Wolves and horses, same story. Their pretty so lets save em
@bagodirtywealth - Perhaps we should clarify this point: Would you also agree that we should put a proper management control on the exponential growth of HUMANS in the absence of natural preditors??? I mean, we are damaging a whole lot more than range land...we seem to damage everything else that goes with it, naturally.
Your point is mute. Yes, human popultion growth is a problem, but it has no place in the management of wolves and other species that we share the land with.
@bagodirtywealth 2 words for you: controlled breeding. Starting with the human race before even atempting to sort out other species "wellbeing" . Afterall, in many places humans are also introduced species to the land once belonged to nature & natives (who actually lived in natural harmony, not against it). Overbreeding pushed limits of resources in certain areas, therefore "forcing" people to relocate. Snowball effect: the bigger the #s of humans, the more devastating effects on other species.
You elucidate the impact of humans on the environment, but you provide nothing more than conjecture and speculation. Many people believe that humans are pests, while thinking their own shit doesn't stink.
Instead of placing blame, lets be proactive in managing our range lands for the greater good, while ensuring the long term health of the ecosystem. This is facilitated through active, agressive management that has profoundly positive impacts on our ecosystems.
@bagodirtywealth Be proactive? control breeding! not placing blame, just stating some facts of human behavior and the impact of such upon natural resources. Stop multiplying at this rate, needing/claiming more land, and in the process moving away other species to make room. No one gave humans the right to play some form of an All-God "managing" the natural wealth, making stupid decisions along the way, resulting in the need to sort the mess out by killing others. Just because we can? sad reason!
Ecosystem management is a scientific process that appeals mainly to those with an education in natural sciences. Once you understand the issues facing range managers, the practices being exercised make sense.
Your solution to our worldly problems is to control human population growth, yet you offer no avenue to accomplish this. Perhaps you should check out from our world, because after all, your presence here is detrimental to the health of our natural world...right?
@bagodirtywealth I am not the one condoning or implementing the practice of killing wild animals under "land management" - excuses that ultimately serve only individuals or political interests. How ridiculous is this round up of wild horses, put them into enclosures & realize afterwards "d'uh! we haven't got money to feed them, so lets kill them!" - which is where this issue started from. Anyway, this conversation has to stop - let's agree to disagree. Checking out, have a good life!
PASS THE WORD to everyone you know. This Senator and his kind must be stopped. His act is without conscience and is a violation of the spirit of our national laws, if not the letter of them.
The sad part of all this is that it is a man made problem and therefore we need to be involved. With nature, I usually say that letting things be is the best thing, but horses are not native and therefore invasive. Does that mean they don't work into the ecosystem? Don't know. We need to get scientists involved. Maybe reintroduce wolves into the area. Do get the cattle and the oil concerns out. Cows stink.
Someone needs to charge the BLM with animal abuse. There is no reason for the roundups, and the kind of damage that is being done with the helicopters and inadequate holding facilities has to be actionable under humane treatment laws.
Re: comments about the 'damage' wild horses cause the environment: What about driving a car, flushing a toilet, electricity, fast food - in short, just about all of us in one form / at one time or another contributes to earthly 'damage'. But that is not all we do. Personally, I look to the good we can all bring to this world - humans and beasts alike - and hope that we use our wisdom to bring balance to what we receive and what we give back. The demise of the wild horse is neither fair nor just.
sagewildhorse - reading your latest comment, I have to wonder how much that land was sold for and where the proceeds were allocated if the gov't is spending $30 million of the taxpayer's money to house the horses they've captured? There seems to be a continued pattern of a general lack of accountability in which the wild horses are the latest victim (in this case).
So, unless someone stands to make money off a beast / creature who consumes its fair share of food or water they have to be controlled, slaughtered, relocated? Sounds like what happened to the Native Peoples of the US.. Pray you don't come up on the list and protect that which is still allowed to exist in the wild, while wilderness itself still remains. I'm with the horses.
I've loved horses since time out of mind. Have loved freedom longer. Sad that "free-spirited" and "underdog" remain so often synonymous. Heartened by the lack of silence.
The BLM intends to roundup 12,000 free-roaming horses living on PUBLIC land in 2010.
500 of the existing 645 wild and free-roaming horses of the Eagle Herd Management Area living on PUBLIC land outside of Ely, Nevada, will be removed from 625,000 acres of land so that ranchers can raise their livestock on that land.
This roundup, as well as the Calico roundup of 650 horses to date, is all about grass and which animals get to eat it. Period!
YOU NEED TO GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT In 1997, a BLM official told the Associated Press that roughly 90% of adopted wild horses ended up going to slaughter.Tens of thousands remain in holding. The government spends more than $30 million a year to house captured horses. There is no need to find new land for the mustang. The land designated for them in 1971, 19.4 million acres of their original herd areas, have been sold and made available for livestock, but they have never been reopened to the horses.
@HorseDreamer262 Really? Then where have 260,000 wild horses & burros gone since 1971? You are a dreamer indeed if you think they were all adopted. BLM employees have stated that 90% that were rounded up went thru the slaughter plants.
And you would believe the government on this? Visit Lifesavers, Inc. or Front Range Equine Rescue web sites. They have been saving mustangs from slaughter for years. There are not enough people to adopt them as it takes someone exprienced to work with these horses. There is a range war going on and the horses are loosing.
"Recent genetic research has proven that the modern horse is the true genetic equivalent to E Lambei, the last horse to occupy No America prior to extinction."It stands to reason that the horse is as much of apart of our landscape as the grizzly or the moose, or any other free roaming species that has survived the millennia.".Dr. Jay Kirkpatrick, Phd,Director of the Science and Conservation Cntr in Billings,MT
President Obama, it is time--it is long past the time--to dismantle the Bureau of Land MisManagement. The BLM is a rogue agency, spending OUR tax dollars to eradicate our American wild horses, and thereby rob us of a great part of our American heritage. Dear Mr. Obama--please kill off the BLM, NOW--before they kill off every wild horse in America. Ken Salazar and his honchos are making a lot of money to destroy OUR heritage. We respect you, but we demand that the BLM be destroyed, NOW.
The most inbred horses on the planet are racing Thoroughbreds - they are all nearly genetically identical. This is published data. But no one suggests getting rid of them.
Wild horses can't reproduce if there is not enough forage - therefore, if there are all these horses to be "managed" , there must be sufficient food that enables them to reproduce. Deer do the same thing - more food, more babies.
I agree there must be more logical solutions than what is currently happening in management.
Not emotion use common sense u cry out about freedom n icon, yet you offer no solution to the out of control populations of feral horses not your beloved spanish mustang but horses that have been turned loose frm farming n domestic purposes for years Feral horses damage streams n the fish n unmanaged they breed their own mothers and sisters! Wild horses are a part of history but can't manage their own population n inbreeding! Have common sense people and get facts provide logical solutions!
@desertldy You don't know enough about the situation to make remarks on this. They have taken over 260,000 wild horses and burros off our public lands since 1971, there are about 27,000 left. 12,000 will be removed this year alone. 24 million acres have been taken from their HMA's and cattle and sheep are now on that land. Most of theses wild eqines have gone to slaughter.
1st of all I do know enough I live there work there n recreation there n deal with it year around. Do you? Your #s are wrong your use accusations are wrong where u say the feral horses went is wrong! Feral horses destroy wildlife and the enviroment. This is not about Ranchers, cows, or the BLM it's about overpopulated feral animals destroy native habitat and damaging native wildlife. Public land is my land as well and I don't approve of over populations of feral free range horses destroying it!
Please share this video on your Facebook, Twitter, MySpace...wherever you can! If we as a nation band together to protest, maybe then the BLM will be forced to stop this extermination process! What they are doing is basically illegal.
sagewildhorse, I agree with you , they need to leave the horses alone... the BLM is out of control.. big time... these horses will become gone forever.... and the blm wants to sell them to slaughter... for money... greedy and killers.. Blm leave the wild horses alone....
Please tell your friends about this video. A horse just died in the most recent roundup in Nevada. There are safe and proven methods to control the wild horse population, including giving birth control shots to the mares. This slaughter is an inhumane waste of our tax dollars!
You know a long time ago the mustang breed was almost wiped out. Why are we repeating our past? For greed. You can not slaughter enough wild horses to help the economy, yet that is the excuse used to make slaughter possible. Contact your local senator/state rep. Put an end to reckless extermination of the equine breeds.
yes contact your senator/state rep! Remind them these are not "Mustangs of the past" these are horses that have been turned loose ranging bck to the calvary remount days! Platter footed draft horses even! This isn't about money this is about the balance of nature and the enviroment and all species within it. This is about reality not a disney movie. This is abt domination of a vry distructive dominate feral species with no natural predators! They don't need to be eradicated but they need managed
The wild horse population should be humanely controlled and managed, but not eradicated entirely! Damn the bigwig politicians that cause such suffering to these animals!
I wish this video could be seen on New Reports so that all people could see what happened to our wild horses behind our backs. I wish that this video could be turned into an advertisement who will pass like the presidential election on all channels TV or radio stations. Debate should be organized to show the importance to safeguard these unique heritage. In few hours my wish for 2010 will be that President Obama will stop the round up in Nevada and stop the BLM for the irreversible destruction
..a wild spirit that cannot be tamed. We're fascinated by the wild horse,There is a deep part in us that doesnt want to see him tamed. Cattle to horse ratio is 200:1. Cattle grazing on public land has increased 300% over the last few years. The BLM & the cattle ranchers won't cop to the damage the cattle do. What is happening to our wild horses is a metaphor for what is happening to America. The wild horses--crushed under the corruption of BLM.. Watch news, watch the movie. Fight back.
please take a stand...the BLM is out of control...and the Senate and the President are letting them literally get away with murder...as of 12/28/09 the BLM is rounding up 2700 wild horses in the Calico Complex in Nevada...they lie and say that the reason is "they are starving"...the reason is cattle and the rape of our Western landscape from drilling and mineral extraction......the BLM is on a mission of MANAGED EXTINCTION....YOUR TAX DOLLARS ARE FUNDING THIS ATTROCITY
I just came out of the Calicos from bird hunting and the range is wrecked. The waterholes are destroyed. I never saw a single cow. Never saw a deer. There's nothing out there for these animals to eat or drink. Are you wearing shoes today? If so take them off. They were made from a cow. Do you have candles in your house? Throw them away. They were made from a cow. Do you have cats or dogs? Get rid of them their food is made from a cow. GET OVER IT!!!!!
no.. NVbuckaroo...they take cows off the range for the winter..don't you know? buckaroo.Boy take your anger out on the cattle that have destroyed the range..not the wild horses...
High horse #s outcompete all wildlife for the region's limited water resources n cause damage to springs n seeps they beat riparian habitat to mud holes horse use is excessive to the point of rendering habitat unavailable to wildlife.like sage grouse pronghorns n bighorn, horses silt up the crks n cover up spawning gravel for trout, eat the meadows to dirt hang out in the riparian areas n eat understory, trampling willows, causing major habitat damage for native birds how can you advocate this?
* Overall welfare livestock constitute a net loss of $123 million annually to the American tax payer. * Cows graze within a mile of water. In comparison wild horses are highly mobile, moving 5-10 miles from water and grazing on more rugged terrain. * A 1000-lb cow not only eats 26lbs. of forage daily but they consume as much as 30 gallons of water a day and defecate in it as well. * Private and corporate livestock outnumber wild horses at least 100 to 1 on public lands.
this is shit tbh .. i`m from the uk . but ya goverment stink you are the ones who vote them in how anyone can do this to something so beautiful is beyond beleve..

Take Action to save our last remaining horses and to return the illegally rounded-up horses into the wild, where they are entitled to live peacefully.

Avandia03 2 years ago
You know a long time ago the mustang breed was almost wiped out. Why are we repeating our past? For greed. You can not slaughter enough wild horses to help the economy, yet that is the excuse used to make slaughter possible. Contact your local senator/state rep. Put an end to reckless extermination of the equine breeds.
jediknightkass44 2 years ago
yes contact your senator/state rep! They don't need to be eradicated but they need managed
desertldy 2 years ago

Fight back.

please take a stand...the BLM is out of control...and the Senate and the President are letting them literally get away with murder...as of 12/28/09 the BLM is rounding up 2700 wild horses in the Calico Complex in Nevada...they lie and say that the reason is "they are starving"...the reason is cattle and the rape of our Western landscape from drilling and mineral extraction......the BLM is on a mission of MANAGED EXTINCTION....YOUR TAX DOLLARS ARE FUNDING THIS ATTROCITY
sagewildhorse 2 years ago
I just came out of the Calicos from bird hunting and the range is wrecked. The waterholes are destroyed. I never saw a single cow. Never saw a deer. There's nothing out there for these animals to eat or drink. Are you wearing shoes today? If so take them off. They were made from a cow. Do you have candles in your house? Throw them away. They were made from a cow. Do you have cats or dogs? Get rid of them their food is made from a cow. GET OVER IT!!!!!
nvbuckaroo2000 2 years ago
no.. NVbuckaroo...they take cows off the range for the winter..don't you know? buckaroo.Boy take your anger out on the cattle that have destroyed the range..not the wild horses...

Sorry born and raised on 40,000 acres and I know what these damn horses do.
