  • holy fuck betty was THAT old even back then? dam lmao

  • I wonder if Betty froze because she thought something might have been wrong (i.e. she gave away part of the answer) because at the moment the contestant got the right answer the board went dark instead of lighting up. Hmmm.

  • When it was Things in a closet Betty white should have said Homosexuals xD.

  • Betty is queen!

  • at around 12 seconds in it sounds like a buzzer going off

  • talk about a delayed reaction. i counted 5 seconds before she realized she won.

  • She got the BIG jackpot without even knowing that.

  • I think they both froze because they were in shock that she got the answer with those 2 clues. :D :D

  • why the fuck did she say "WOODEN"?

  • @RealDefentertainment How often in the 80's would a hammer have a metal handle?

  • @RealDefentertainment Because most hammer handles are made of wood (at least THEM) - and most doors are made of wood (though not their handles)

She simple took the common element to both objects.

  • I had to listen to a certain segment to find out why they just stayed there and didn't react.

Listen at about 0:10 . I hear a very strange noise right when the pylon flips to $300 and it disappears from the screen.

Is it me, or do you hear a buzzing noise? (I also think I hear the bells to indicate a win.) Maybe it was edited (the audience reaction amplified to drain out the mistaken buzzer).

  • @almightytora I can hear the buzzer you're talking about. That's a good find.

  • @almightytora I think it's an encoding artifact. A real buzzer for "illegal clue" would have been much louder.

  • @shawnkquinn just curious is the illegal clue buzzer the same one heard when time runs out?

  • @disneydanny2 Yes, they are one and the same. And yes, it has caused confusion. I remember one clip where a celeb says "what was wrong with that one?" and Dick replies "nothing, we ran out of time."

  • @shawnkquinn If the people from Bob Stewart productions had a second buzzer/horn and their OWN 'losing horns' like "The Price is Right" and "Card Sharks", there wouldn't be confusions.

  • @Rlotpir1972 - On the Davidson version, they used two short buzzes when an illegal clue was given...while I liked the fact that it avoided confusion w/the "time's up" buzzer, it was so short and abrupt that the clue-giver sometimes didn't hear it.

  • I seem to be fond that the clip here from 0:11-0:22 became a subject of a flashback clip. If I had to remember, this clip was shown at the start of the October 4, 1985 episode. Some of you might even remember this clip that was used when they were using the freeze-frame between 10/10/83-1/25/85.

  • One word... "duuuuuuuuh"

  • 'Did I win?'

    'I won!'

    wtf was with Betty there?

  • I think what happened is that the woman said "Things With a Wooden Handle" and Betty probably only heard the wooden part of the clue. It was an odd reaction. I'm guessing that was the only time that happened.

  • I think Betty was so completely stunned that the woman got it with those 2 clues that she was unable to respond.

  • I think she was waiting for the *Ding* If you notice the $300 box didn't light up and the audience cheered too loud for her to hear it. That might not have helped and made the contestant ask "Did I win?" OKay now we can start bebopping around.

  • @jason12901 I think you are on to something! Betty might've thought that, for SOME reason (without the ding AND the $300 box lighting up), that she'd futzed up the clue and failed at the very top!

  • Didn't Charlie hit $25,000 that same week?

  • In the first round "foods with paprika" was disqualified for the category Spicy Foods because you can't use the word "foods" when it is part of the answer. NOT because of the word "with", sorry but the "with" explanation has to be the lamest explanation I ever heard.

  • Right, but that's how the end game worked. Any clue that was too descriptive, i.e. some kind of prepositional phrase, wasn't allowed.

Another example. The category was "Things that Cling" and the clue given was "socks in winter." That got buzzed as well.

  • thanks Philly I guess I was the lame one. Haven't watched this show since it first aired way back when I guess I forgot the rules. Didn't know you couldn't use preppostions - I stand corrected.

  • No problem, but in case you haven't heard It's back on GSN. The $25,000 version is at 11:30AM EDT and the $100,000 version is at 1:00PM, then 2:00AM and 2:30AM repeats as well.

  • 10:30 AM Now!

  • are the episodes shown in the morning the same ones shown at night or are they 4 different episodes?

  • It might be a strange reaction but if you thought you won the first time around only not to due to getting disqualified then I don't blame her for wondering if the same thing might have happened.

    Betty White is the best!!

  • I remember this episode when it was on GSN. I think the reason she acted like this was because in the previous round she and Charlie Siebert got the last category "Spicy Foods" when Siebert gave the clue "foods with paprika", and she was all excited about winning, but they disqualified it a few moments later for the clue Siebert gave her. I imagine that's why she was telling Dick Clark "I wanted to hear it from you" at around the 0:45 mark.

  • I would feel the same way too. What was wrong with the clue? Was it "an essence" of the subject as Dick Clark would put it?

  • "foods with paprika" was too discriptive that's why it was disqualified

  • That was one of the ways I saw it. The word "with" made the phrase too descriptive.

  • Hello. The reason that they disqualifed the clue is because it was too descriptive for one and he said part of the answer since food was the key word in the subject. If we will said paprika chicken then the win will have stand.

  • Has anyone noticed that when a contestent went to the winner's circle and won $10,000 the $25,000 sign lit still. And then the sign flashed when contestant won $25,000. Later on in the years it didn't matter #25,000 sign flashed when a contestant got to the top of the pyramid.

  • Yeah Betty was one of the queens of game shows, smart lady

  • Betty White is the master

  • Did I win?" Let's see, the whole goddamn place erupted in cheers. YES YOU WON! Jesus! <-- oh sorry the reaction didn't meet your approval!! yes it seem sobvious to us but if you were playing for $25,000 you might be just a little bit nervous and maybe not thinking so clear.

  • "Did I win?" Let's see, the whole goddamn place erupted in cheers. YES YOU WON! Jesus!

  • Type, "1991 $100,000 pyramid" and watch the video with "cotton things." You will see why she reacted this way.

  • they just sittin there like 'duh' LOL i love it

  • For a sec I thought that was Vicki Lawrence! Maybe it was the hair.

  • she looks like she is having a seizure

  • This is one of the earliest eps. of The (New) $25,000 Pyramid. Looks at those blue trilons and the softer-pitched "ding" sound that carried over from he original versions as well!

  • I was wondering why there was the blue. GSN should bring this show back. I remember when it was on 6-7 every weeknight, and I would always watch it. I have a feeling it will be coming back real soon...just a gut feeling though, no facts known.....

  • This was back when the show was simply called "The $25,000 Pyramid." The word "New" wasn't added until late 1982. Those blue Winner's Circle trilons would last until the end of the 1982-83 season.

  • She was the 2nd player to win $25,000, O believe, do you have the 1st winner with Charlie Siebert?

    Or anymore $25,000 Pyramid clips?
