I was Hurn at this display, went to Bournemouth airshow this weekend. Chalk and cheese, at Hurn the ground shook, your insides shook and kids were crying all around me due to the sound from full power climb.
Your Video is diiferent from so many......558 is obviuosly going for altitude and maintains full power for the duration of the climb out where as now they reduce power after reaching a transit altitude . I guess this latter action reduces the cracking of the skin in the airintake caused by the resinating howl. The second thing was the wing wave on full power! Well done pilot Flight LT Paul Milikin ( later sqdrn leader ) who displayed the aeroplane so well back then.
No. The reason why they don't perform like the RAF did all those years ago is because they want to preserve engine cycles. The resonating howl idea is laughable.
Your comment on engine cycles is absolutely correct. Frequent cracking of the air intakes during the latter days of the VDF are documented. My remark should have been a quote from the ground crew who explained this to me at Exeter airshow When asked about the high number of skin failures compared to elsewhere on the airframe the words continuous full power and resonating intake howl were his reply. I didnt think the comment was laughable, he worked on the VDF..why should I doubt him?
