I've always enjoyed the subtly of this 1959 RCA recording. The later CBS recording was exciting if a bit frenzied, but misses the sheer poetry demonstrated here.
i think the hammerklavier and appassionata are two of the greatest large scale sonatas for piano in history....beethoven really knew how to penetrate deep into the human psyche
@MozartK365 Beethoven would LOVE this and Rachmaninoff's Appassionata - Horowitz heard Rach perform it. Does anyone know if Rach's is uploaded on YT - thanks :-))
c'est monstrueux !!qu'ont on sait qu'il n'aimait pas Beethoven et pourtant je trouve que c'est une des plus belles version avec aussi son inoubliable 3 éme mvt de la Waldstein
I love the way he plays this sonata this time, so slowly and gravely, with true despair. A great interpretation of this colossal sonata. It is like he is feeling every single note
Be quiet!

Possibly the 2nd best performance of this piece I've heard in my opinion.

I feel the same way. Whose is your favorite? I like M. Hess's performance best (for now, anyway).

This sounds like the 1959 RCA recording. He later did it for CBS in the early 70's, which is a bit more frenzied.

There is another recording of Horowitz playing the same piece, which one did he record earlier?

I think this one, it sounds older.
