Yes, at that stage of my learning it was taking all available brain cells to get me near to the right notes ... and so timing wasn't quite right, and I tended to anticipate notes. Hopefully, 18 months on, I'm doing better now .. at least I'm finding pitch easier, so I have an odd few brain cells left over for other refinements!
Thank you! I have played the cello and the piano. I think it is helpful to have learned another instrument previously when planning to learn the theremin.
This particular theremin is a Moog Etherwave Standard ... which is a good theremin to learn on, I think.
Thank you. I recorded this version quite a long time ago. A second version I recorded later didn't please me ... so I really should do a new recording of this piece sometime!
If you DO consider taking up a new musical instrument I can certainly recommend the theremin. Before discovering it, I'd been wanting to try a new instrument, and considered several others, none of which really inspired me very much. The unique demands of the theremin have been a real challenge, but made learning all the more fun for that ... and all the more worthwhile now, several months on, I'm getting the hang of playing it!
You get a great sound out of it... I've actually never on YouTube hear and Etherwave standard sound like that, so there you go with the "superior theremin performances on youtube" :)
I think this piece already sounds above mediocre... But if you insist on being mediocre, consider this: when you're mediocre at piano, there's possibly thousands of people out there better than you. When you're mediocre at theremin, there's maybe a few dozen better than you!
I know others may opt for a brighter more stinglike tone, but for this piece I like to keep the brightness setting quite low for a mellower tone. Reverb from the amp also helps soften the sound. For other pieces I change the settings.
Your final comment is well observed! However, I'd rather be critical of my own playing before anyone else is! I like to be aware of where I'm going astay; it's the first step towards doing better next time!!
sounds good but at times you sound like you're rushing
