I mean, if an explosion could kill a B.O.W., like the one that took out the Spencer Mansion in RE1 or the one that took out Birkin in RE2, being consumed by lava should kill Wesker for good. If they're ever going to bring back Wesker in another game, Resident Evil 6, I think that's what will happen. I don't know how you can legitimately argue that Chris and Wesker are not the main characters of the entire Resident Evil series. First, Wesker was behind/involved in just about every event that we've seen in the games, Rsident Evil 0 to Resident Evil 5. Chris, has been a central character or mentioned as being part of the overall story more than any other character save Wesker.

I think you could argue that Resident Evil 4 was nothing really more than a side story, as it only had one main character from a previous game, Leon, and one side character, Ada in her small cameo. It had no real connection to the other games or storyline. And, now that Resident Evil 5 has been released, I think you could argue even more convincingly that Resident Evil 4's only real contribution to the Resident Evil story was Las Plagas, the background to Resident Evil 5.

They could have introduced Las Plagas in another small way, and if they had Resident Evil 4 would have been useless and unnecessary for the overall story. That makes it really a sidestory at best. Just because you loved Resident Evil 4, Leon and its new game play doesn't mean it should be placed on some pedestal. On its own it was a pretty good game, just in the context of the Resident Series overall, it was pointless, save Las Plagas.
