  • i really love the way you play around with the dynamics. Breathtaking interpretation. I hope I can play it as well some day. I can't play the agitato part fast enough yet.

  • I played this too for a talent in a beauty contest. It is a very difficult piece with chords consisting of 9 notes at a time with more than an octave stretch. Excellent performance, Eva!

I can appreciate the hours you put in to memorizing this and perfecting it. BRAVO!

  • Breathtaking, love this, absolute master.

  • Very much liked her interpretation. Isn't it amazing when a performance matches exactly with what you hear in your head? :)

  • The sound quality drops the high bands out in a couple places :( Very sad about the quality. The interpretation is beautiful and played with much feeling.

  • Beautifully played, with the expression in timing and fingers.

Also a lovely tone on that piano I must say....

    Inspiring.

  • Very nice interpretation, I believe the sffff could have been a little more radical however. I am not just saying that to be a critic either, it's just a very radical piece emotionally.

  • 2:38 -- BEEEEE CAREFUL WHAT YOU'RE LOOKING AT BECAUSE IT MIGHT BE LOOKING BACK

  • ase re aggeliki grhgorh

  • One of the best performances I've heard. Fantastic!!!

  • Bravo, dammit.

  • She delivers. Artist. Me like. Give me more of that staccato. You are going places.

  • Love it.

  • realy beautiful...your Interpretation has to touch my heart..realy

  • it should be payed slower...

  • That was an excellent interpretation!

  • this is amazing. I don't care if you changed the piece, I personally didn't notice it but you did an awesome job of it if you did.

  • i love love LOVE this interpretation!!!! so different, but stunnning!!

  • it was good but she looked so uncomfortable playing it like waiting for it to be over, I go freekin nuts when i play this lol

  • Beautiful! Just a few little nit-picky things... the chord in the first measure is held for 4 1/2 beats, but you only held it for 2... maybe less. Also, you could take your time on the exposition. It's supposed to be slow and delicate in comparison to the B section; it's a characteristic of Rachmaninoff's pieces.

  • Although some critics suggest otherwise, I think this piece is very well played and how it is played gives a more mysterious air!

This is the best interpretation I have heard this prelude!

    BRAVO

  • I studied piano for many years in my youth, at the sponsorship and encouragement of my Grandmother. This piece was my recital special and I practiced it endlessly for years. Curiously, it is not really that technically difficult. This is a flawless performance in my opinion...ideas about pace and intrepretation are interesting, and every instrument sound a little different, and recording techniques introduce even more variables, but this is a solid performance in every aspect.

  • To anyone who is going to criticize; have some class.

Because if your condescending and mean spirited who cares about your darned opinion anyway?

I thought it was beautiful, maybe not perfect; but still sounded very lovely.

    Keep playing music.

  • personally i dont like nothing this interpretation but...

it is never bad if rachmaninof compose it.

  • So ummm WHY all the critics? She's doing quite nicely here and I seriously doubt that many of these "critics" could begin to compare. Let the girl alone and instead of listening for faults, simply just enjoy her performance here ...by the way Recording a Piano really isn't that easy of a task in and of itself.

  • Creepy. (O_O) Was this the piano piece played in the movie The Exorcism of Emily Rose?? O:

  • most women shouldn't attempt this piece.

  • @kettellive excuse me ?!

most women, how the hell does gender have anything to do with how well you play. one of the best performances i've ever seen of this piece was in fact by a woman, and just beacues you didn't like this one there are bunches of great piano players both men AND women who do a prefectly good job with it

  • @Heidur94 why don't you find me alll the female and male performances and we can compare. XD

  • @kettellive sexists are scum, you sir; are scum.

Does being a good musician really excuse sexist thoughts or the racist thoughts you are probably harboring as well?

I don't understand how someone who enjoys such beautiful and refined music can think in such a way, it's total hypocrisy. Your probably a pretty sad man, and if you are content than i find that much more appalling.

  • @kettellive I'd like to hear you try this. Why don't we hear YOU play it, and compare.

  • @MsThisNameIsTaken done, i'll get back to you in 2 months.

  • @pianoplayer450 i said most, read.

  • @pianoplayer450 women make the best pianists IMO

  • @kieran514 yes(: lol

  • Try Rach's own 1938 2 piano transcription of his prelude at /watch?v=EL2t8gk4Y_c - performed at the International Rachmaninoff Society's 2008 AGM.

    Valentina Seferinova rules!!

  • You must be good because your music touched my heart. Bravo

  • no technique at all !

  • very fast start, over all the song is played nicely but it lacked the spirit ! sorry

  • Still here to listen to this interpration.

Tried many well-known piano player but I have to admit this is out of rank...

Wonderful personal interpretation again...still astonished after many tests.

    Take a bow M.me Brandys...

  • Brava!

  • Great interpretation of this piece!

  • Maybe M.me Brandys did not play this piece with perfect technique...

But...Rach' spirit is there, alive. Personal interpretation is at the best.

Wonderful...she deserves an ovation. Great and never boring.

Classic example that interpration goes over technical execution.

  • Please, listen to this prelude performed by me on youtube. Thanks and best regards, Rezo Jorbenadze.

  • lovely lovely interpretation . you people try too hard to find errors . instead you should see the message she's trying portray through this piece of music. . feel the emotion that she's throwing out there.

  • To the people criticizing.. she never asked for your weak opinion ... Its her interpretation so just listen or go listen to something else . You knuckleheads .

Excellent piece :) well done !!!!

  • Interesting piece, apparently Rachmaninoff hated it because he was always being asked to play it! It is meant to convey the emotions of a man buried alive. The open chords depict his wondering where he is in the darkness and then his panic and finally as the air gives out he expires - very graphic!

  • What happened to the whole note in measure2? Not many count this as the composer wrote it.

  • pitch mistakes at 1:22, 2:00, 2:24, 2:35, 2:49. also rachmaninoff would have disapproved of the fast start on the faster section. at 2:59 the chords are meant to be played as close together as possible--they are not two separate chords, one and the same. ritardando and the decresciendo was ignored at the end. other than this a solid interpretation, almost perfect in terms of hitting the notes. well done

  • beginning played too fast IMO very good otherwise :)

  • People always forget the start has to be ppp.

  • great playing

  • Very VERY good built dramaically! Especially the culmination! Interesting timing - i think much more close to that one, Rahmaninov really ment, than to that one, usually played nowadays... Very good! I liked it! Bravo! p.s. and don't listen to those ones criticizing You! Just continue doing what You do! I'm sure You're on the right way! :))

  • If someone wants to be a good pianist he needs to follow two things. First of all, he needs heart;; you must feel the music you're playing and you need to spend hours on the piano daily which means work, work, work. Then come all the others. If you follow these two basic rules you'll become great someday. I'm neither a pianist nor a professional but that's how I see it.

  • @RachPhantom40 half true. I believe to be a truly good pianist, like any good artist, he or she must first suffer. They must understand what pain and sorrow are. Because most pieces that are more heartwrenching are those that are somber. so i agree, but i feel in order to feel the music, you must have had some experience of suffering

  • Really good, just one wrong in the 2:23 minutes

  • mais que ce passe t-il mesure 2 ??????? je pense que le tempo du début est encore trop vite comme beaucoup d'autres interprétations sur you tube....

  • Videos that are posted to YouTube are posted to get feedback. All opinions, criticisms, etc. are fair game. Whether or not you can play the piece is utterly beside the point. Art is meant to be reacted to, and I doubt there are many people who would wait until they can make an interpretation of a movie or book before they form/give an opinion on it. Being more informed won't make you like a piece more or less, it will just change your reasons for doing so.

  • Sorry to get on a soapbox, I just feel like this needed to be said because some of the arguments forming here seem ridiculous to me.

  • Im working on this now- and my piano teacher insists that I reassign the top notes of the left hand chords to the right hand....

But I think that whats in the bass clef should be for the left hand etc..

What I wanted to ask to Ms. Brandys, or anyone on youtube was what do you prefer and why?

  • she probably wants you to do that in order to learn the notes. For instance, if i am playing a piece in which the notes just completely escape my memory at random points, i will actually play the piece with no pedal, with only my index fingers, breaking all the chords. that way, i can be certain i actually know all of the notes, instead of just being "just about" sure, from finger memory. <---- thats where almost everyone messes up at a concert.

  • I prefer to play the bass clef with the left hand, it is quiet difficult, but it sounds better, because the octave in the bass has so more power but if you have the time to "overwrite" the sheet, so do it for the beginnig, if you finaly know what the chords are, you can play it how it is written in the sheets. (sry for my bad englisch:S)

  • @nkip9230 Make your own decision based on personal preference. All music should be down to the performer's interpretation. If you find it easier to finger the piece a different way, and it sounds as good as Rachmaninoff's method, why not play it the easiest way for you? Fingering indications in music are usually written as suggestions for performers to aid sight reading, especially in the classical genre, so they need not be taken as gospel.

  • I played this for contest and I'll be playing it for a college audition. Even though it's all a matter of interpretation, I do think that the tempo of the "A" section was rather fast. My judge said that going any faster would ruin the piece. I liked the "B" section. The notes before the "double staff" measures seemed rushed to me along with the "double staff" part. But overall, I really enjoyed listening to this. I'd just slow it down a little bit, IMHO. Again, GREAT JOB! :D

  • You know, when I played this piece, I realized just how difficult a job it is interpreting the tempo and dynamics of this deal really was! It said "Lento" as a tempo I marking, but Lento has a whole lot of different meanings to a whole bunch of people.

  • Le premier do # (la sol# -> do#) doit durer 4 temps.Pourquoi précipiter, au lieu de laisser le son s'éteindre lentement pour ensuite pouvoir continuer la ligne mélodique beaucoup plus doucement?

  • Very Beautiful music. Harpo Marx plays a shorter funnier version of this in "A Day at the Races"

  • Btw, despite how ignorant YourResultsMayVary is, he makes a good point. I hate it when people try to criticize an interpretation and sound all accomplished when 99% of them can't even play the piece...

  • @jkcbm4 I can play the piece. I can say that this performance sucks. :D

  • @jkcbm4 well i am actually learning to play this piece now, and while interpretation is both unavoidable and to be encouraged, there is a point where you are actually changing the way the piece is written, and this can be tricky and wont improve your music reading. Its a slippery slope and before you know it you will be playing a different piece. This woman plays well I like the way this sounds, but at the beginingshe doesnt give the whole note the right length. That is more of a mistake

  • Stupendous. How the hell could you only give this 4 stars?

  • I thought the middle agitato section (i.e. the triplets) was played VERY well. The chromatic melody was very distinct. The final page (fff) was also played well. Nice job!

  • Oh....my...God.

This reminds me of Harpo Marx. I thought he was just playing random notes on the keyboard being...well, you know....Harpo. He really knew what he was doing!

  • Gorgeous!!!!

  • Thank you for your interesting and encouraging tips! I will try it again but this time step by step!

  • cannot listen to those equal tempo arpegios.

  • just enjoy the piece instead of being a music snob. too many like you bitching around on people's videos.

upload a video of you playing it then talk some shit.

  • What right do you have to say that this is good music when you say that we have no right to say it's bad? Fuck you!

It's a meh interpretation of Rachmaninoff but still not a bad one at least.

  • Fuck yourself man, im just tired of coming across every other vid of a fairly decent interpretation and people bitching about the technique or whining about equal tempo arpegios.

The fact is, it's beautiful music either way. Sure thing's can be improved, but thats for every performance. Nobody's perfect, so just chill back and enjoy. Peace

  • That's because it's RACHMANINOFF! This is some of the hardest music to interpret in the world. Everyone unfortunately has a different opinion about how a song "should" sound and that's why every different interpretation is a different song even if they are the same song!

This is all aside the point I raised, you are being a musical snob by saying that our opinion is not worth as much as yours, and that pisses me off. Even if we dislike the piece, it gives you no right to crucify our OPINION.

  • dammit nigger i knew you were gonna take that last comment to an argument heh.

I never said that "your" opinion or anyone elses was not worth as much as mine, and i reiterate, im just tired of seeing negative comments with no substance for anything remotely constructive.

Also i never crucified your opinion lol, you're taking this shit way overboard by establishing some kind of divide here.

Enjoy the piece and live life.

  • Secondly people don't understand that this is a romanticist piece, of course equal tempo arpeggios won't exist! Just let the people who are ignorant of the specifics of this music stay ignorant.

  • @Deathyman but still, i think she plays it very well, she should just maybe wait a little longer on that third note of the opening as it is actually WRITTEN as a whole note. and maybe start of quieter as it is WRITTEN as piano. this also would give her more freedom to crescendo with some of those chords if she wanted. Interpretation is good but there is a point where you start to actually go against what is written, this case there is the rythmic problem at the top. she plays beautifully though.

  • @Deathyman thats the beauty of it! this piece is rubato! im sorry? what time signature?

  • well stated

  • It looks so easy but this piece is so difficult! I tried to play it but I gave up... :-(

  • @Agassu1 Keep trying, tackle it part by part. Once you can do it, it's a *wonderful* piece to play.

  • @Agassu1 Like what Venefyxatu said, Keep trying. It IS a very difficult piece to learn. I, myself, am still attempting to learn it, but I'm finding it easier as I'm working on each part. It's very technical but it teaches you a lot of things that will eventually help you with other things. I've already seen an improvement in other pieces I'm playing. (: It's a great piece. Hope you try it again. Best of luck. :D

  • this might sound creepy, but look at the muscles in her arms as she plays

  • was the 1/2 sec pause at 2:34 on purpose?

  • People who given their advice on how to play classical piano, esp. Rachmaninoff need to post their own videos and show everyone how it's done. Just my 2 cents. This was amazing. Thank you Eva.

  • wooow I love it, the way you play it is great, i've heard other people playing the same prelude & you are the one i like the most!!! congratulations

  • 2:11, powerful!

  • i think it was cool interpretation, congrats.

  • Hmm.. I think it's a pretty good performance. (And I've listened to TONS of this song). It seems as though anyone who's name isn't world famous automatically loses some points...

  • Too fast at the start. Blurs the dramatic contrast, making it less exciting. The fast section is too loud and lacks subtleties I'm sorry but I think this is not one of the best interpretations on this piece.

  • So what if it wasn't "dramatic" enough; seriously who cares. She did an awesome job with the song, so just sit back and listen to it sheesh

  • dude! i thought i was the only one who said sheesh

  • @jincjia It's because she is a woman. They only carry false emotions of love and thats about it.

  • @ShaggyRaggy that has nothing to do with gender. kthxbye sexist.

  • @jincjia I am not a sexist. I am going to blame it on the downturn of society that women has caused that makes my views this way. However, I don't view them inferior because they cannot be put in the same category of human as men.

  • @ShaggyRaggy so why are you watching her video? next time you want to see some false emotions of love, please watch male politicians practicing their hypocrisy. and YES- you are a sexist. but it's ok because your ridiculous comments cannot be put into the same category of those of a educated individual.

  • @jincjia What are you talking about? Those aren't false emotions of love. Male politicians are practicing their calculated policies to make the country or their wallet a better place. There is nothing emotional about that; however, if you want false emotions of love, how about Hilary Clinton or Sarah Palin. Oh, and btw do seriously have to plagiarize the guy you're insulting? Can't you come up with your own insults.

  • @ShaggyRaggy Troll more, noob.

  • @SillyLitleGirl I was not trolling. I actually believe that women are far inferior to men. Go suck a dick you toolbag

  • @ShaggyRaggy Sorry, I'm afraid I don't know much about sucking dicks. You're going to have to teach me. I'm sure that you're well versed on the subject.

  • @SillyLitleGirl well its not too hard. You see you just put your mouth on the penis and pretend its a hard candy you fuck tart

  • @ShaggyRaggy i resent that

  • @jincjia maybe she likes it that way, i personally like the fast part a bit louder. it doesnt matter the general interpretation, what matters is the personal interpretation. Im no maestro, but i think she did this beautifully, at the very least technically if not sooo dramatically.

  • @MrKfive10 The dynamics she used in the Agitato section (faster section) aren't very diverse. It starts off as mezzo forte and ends in fortissimo with a crescendo before it goes back to Tempo 1 in the actual music. My one problem in this performence is the dynamics in that section.

  • 5 stars! Favored! Subbed!

    Rock on, Eva!

  • Eva, you ROCK!

  • She resembles Jamie Lee Curtis. I bet Jamie which she could play like her though. lol lol

    Wonderfully done!

  • I'm sorry, but I don't like you're interpretation.

    you're a superb pianist, but I don't like

    your interpretation of this one

  • lesterdiamond5, nobody gives a fuck that you don't like her interpretation. Does she look like she cares? lmao

Besides, she's not playing for YOU anyway so she couldn't care less.

It's so funny how people with NO talent always criticize those who DO. Jealous?

    ROFLMAO!

  • He is not criticizing. He is simply sayin that he does not like the interpretation of that piece. I do not like her interpretation either, and I am not critizicing, I'm just giving my opinion.

  • giving an opinion is critizicing in a way.

  • well, there just giving criticism, Eva can take some of this advice and learn from their opinions, there just giving there opinion, there's no reason to flame them for just giving their opinion...

  • It seems like there is very good grand piano! The perfomance is not the greates, but still is not bad.

  • It's Steinway

  • you should. BTW eva, TOO FAST. sry. (i am only 11, i know this, and the number 1 rule i remebered when playng this, KEEP IT SLOW, dont speed up. (i am hearing mssed notes.)

  • SOooo, where exactly are YOUR professional videos, kid?

    Yeah, thought so.

There's a difference in YOUR teacher telling YOU don't play this fast because you CAN'T and Eva playing it at this speed because she has the ability to do so.

Thanks for puttin' out the comment and making a fool of yourself.

  • Cantareadio are you REALLY dissing an 11 year old? I know he didn't exactly make the most constructive comment but don't you think insulting him is a bit of a dick move?

  • sorry, i'm going to agree with the 11 year old kid to a point. I think it should gradually speed up until it reaches into the cascade section, so that it can lead into a really powerful resolution at the end. and so you don't diss me either cantareadio, i got the video to back it up.

  • I gotta agree with the kid too, too fast at the beginning kinda ruins the beauty of it.

  • lol its Rachmaninoff... are you kidding? hahah

  • NICE1 i remember starting to learn this piece.....never did finish...hmmmm....imma gonna look for the score and finish the damn thing...LOL

  • *Sigh*

Constructive criticism may be great, but does everyone (or atleast some people) have to be rude?

Suggestions to make a video better is one thing, but insulting it and making fun of it is another.

  • Comment removed

  • this is beautifully played. wish i can get sum lessons from her

  • brilliant loved it ! absolutely ! dont even listen to these up their arse egocentric morons (ooh i like this version better etc...pathetic and adolescent), your performance moved me, thank you for posting

  • not feeling. bad. nothing special

  • lol lol lol in the 6th bat is D# in the left hand, thats a bad mistake

  • dude...I SAW THAT TOO SO I HAD TO EMAIL THIS TO MY FRIENDS AND WE ALL MADE FUN OF IT TOGETHER!!! HAHAHA~...whatever.

  • what a wanker you are ! music is about feel not whether in the 6th bar or bat as you say a mistake was made . do you realise its about how it makes the listener feel??? lockfolder you have a lot to learn, grow up, no one will ever be able to emulate any composer exactly. Lets hear your version and ill guarantee it wont sound like Rachmaninov.

  • I think you go to far by saying it is not about technicality at all. As I said before; this interpretation, specifically this recording, is far from perfect. However she is not claiming perfection and it was a most marvelous attempt. I enjoyed the way she brought a different approach to certain sections. In summary I would say a bit of work needed here and there but other than that it was excellent. xXx

  • @ juttkeys: of course is music about feeling but in the classic you cannot change the notes, you may change a bit the tempo or the dynamic but to play other notes in classic music is unprofessional & amateur.

  • one of the best youtube interpretations ;)

  • i cant beleive how obnoxsious everyone is being. very nice! also nice view of the dallas skyline!! at first i was like wow whatever that is on the shelf behind her reminds me of dallas...then i was like wait that IS dallas!

  • play lesser known pieces so every mistake won't get ripped apart.

Soooo many ppl play this piece...

I love the piece, and for the record, i think you played it very nicely. Keep it up!

  • she's got no feeling for that prelude...

    simply bad

  • Brilliant!

  • Good job, but u might want to try listening to an original recording by Thomas Edison of Rachmaninoff to get an idea of the composers original timing/ interpretation... (on wikipedia) but I do like your intrepretation...good job

  • tune the piano please

  • GREAT!!!

  • It was alright. It wasn't the best I've heard but still it was decient especially for someone who's not a professional. I say just practice it a bit more before putting up for display. That's when you get a bunch of people who probably can't even play this piece start criticizing you and making it seem like they know what the hell they're doing. :D

  • I love her and her fast playing. Bravo! To hell with the naaaaa sayers

  • Comment removed

  • ooo i heard song wrong notes :/

pretty good though, really nice accenting :)

  • they shouldn't allow open pianist night at bars... then this happens

  • Hahahahahahahahahahahaa

  • fail

  • im playing this for my recital piece and im 14 years old...and i think its amazing...but really hard...super fast!

I LOVE IT....once i get the hang of the notes..i can concentrate on the speed

    WOO HOO

  • Very Good

  • i think it is too fast....

  • i agree, its too fast

  • that is why i got mad and told everyone to shut up, because simply saying someones hard work is shit is not the answer of an educated or nice person. saying that u didnt like it, and saying why (e.g. the choppiness) is different.

  • i am not babying classical musicians. i have a grade 8 certificate in piano, and have played many pieves my yann tierson, mozart, betoven etc, so i KNOW that it is not perfect, but it doesnt have to be perfect in order for it to be posted on youtube. i know that when i post my videos, it will be because i want to know peoples opinions, and how to improve it. not for people to say 'its crap' but for CONSTRUCTIVE criticism.

  • shut up and learn to type

  • good job, i just learned this piece and it is a really hard song to learn. i liked it. dont mind ignorance and jealous people on this page. F em.

  • everyone shut the hell up!!! id like to see YOU try and play it!!!

well done and very nice job, shes just done a different interpretation of this. so leave her alone. the fast part is especially fantastic!!!

  • you are an idiot. stop babying classical musicians. it should be done perfectly if youre gonna post it online or else the wolves are gonna torture you. 1:30 is actually choppy.can i play? no i cant play it. SO WHAT!!! this is the internet and the people who post should re evaluate their vids and practice til they have everything in line. wrong notes are exceptable but choppy and muddy pedal phrases destroy the music. not ready 4 this one end of discussion

  • Oh give me a fucking break; this piece is incredibly difficult. No you can't criticise in such an aggressive manner unless you can play it, this means you do not understand the piece. Have you read the sheet music at least? For all you know Rachmaninoff intended for it to be choppy. I say bravo lady, I am trying desperately to play this and it is near impossible. I adored your take on the triplets, that agitato is NOT easy. xXx

  • im hard on myself as well, criticism does kill a person it improves them. i have read the score and it is intimidating. but this is still not very good. look up yuri rozum on google or 25 piano classics

  • I know but once you have criticised yourself and worked hard for a long time, it is nice not to be bombarded with insults. It's certainly not the best I've ever heard but there are some wonderful sections. xXx
