This attempt was successful, as it was one of the cleanest (relative to its yield) nuclear bombs ever detonated. Only one bomb of this type was ever built and it was tested on October 30, 1961, in the Novaya Zemlya archipelago.[1][2]
@metallifreak23 just after the end of World war 2 the Allies desperately needed to know the effects of current nuclear bombs on maritime targets , hence these tests at Bikini atoll .
A lot of old , and not so old ships , warships as well as merchant ships were moored in the lagoon to represent a big task force , or convoy , or crowded anchorage .
There were two tests - an airburst in which the bomb was hung from a barrage balloon above the ships , and this one , underwater .
@metallifreak23 How about you do some research, The SOVIETS produced and tested a 100 megaton nuclear device known as the Tsar Bomba in 1961, but replaced the uranium tamper with a lead tamper, handicapping it to 50 Megatons. The explosive force of the Tsar Bomb was so great that it shattered windows all the way over in Finland and caused flash burns hundreds of miles away. @TheSpeediestsnail Nukes can't be blown up by another explosion, or anything but themselves. They basically use a "gun" persay to bombard atoms internally. Getting lit on fire, blown up, or having anything else done to them won't make them detonate, only potentially make them useless through damage. So actually, bombing north koreas few nukes would only benefit us if they were ever to use them. Which they probably won't seeing as everyong except china who sucks at everything hates them.

remember all life comes from tha sea...is completely reliant on tha sea...and can NOT live without tha sea....now can you say radiation and genetic mutation???
@v1vadaja the big boats were affected, they were there to demonstrate the power of the explosion, so that they could have a notion of the destruction the bomb can cause.
This video appeared in Discovery Channel and its a true test
you probably couldn't do this today, what with peta and all. I can't imagine how many fish and sea creatures were killed. Damn though, I can't ever get enough of watching atomic bombs exploding.
This is not something to joke about in my opinion, considering this "test" resulted in in the deaths of many of the island's native inhabitants, who were involuntarily relocated to a nearby island that was irradiated with fallout. I doubt the families of the dead and wounded would appreciate the jokes either. The military industrial complex is a serious threat to humanity. FYI - Vannevar Bush was the primary organizer of the Manhattan Project... Oppose the ruling-class war profiteers.
@00RoninSamurai00: Let's run this back again. The island's inhabitants were indeed relocated. As far as I can find, no one died in this or any other US nuclear test, except possibly by industrial accident. This test irradiated no other island. You may be confusing this with a later test which did drop fallout on a native fishing vessel and caused one death on it. The rest of your post is equally well researched rubbish.
"Between 1946 and 1958, twenty-three nuclear devices were detonated at Bikini Atoll, beginning with the Operation Crossroads series in the summer of 1946. Preceding the nuclear tests, the indigenous population was relocated to Rongerik Atoll, though during the Castle Bravo detonation in particular some members of the population were exposed to nuclear fallout (see Project 4.1 for a discussion of the health effects)."
@puncheex Either you are an idiot, or a liar. You fail to account for the long-term effects, which included multiple deaths from cancer related to contaminated fallout falling on Rongerik Atoll and nuclear contamination of the food supply - all of which is well-documented (re: Project 4.1, etc.). Are you really stupid enough to believe there were no harmful side-effects to detonating an H-bomb in the ocean? Don't be a fool.
@00RoninSamurai00: To the best of my knowledge (and I've spent some time looking) only one death was attributed to the Castle Bravo shot, the Japanese fisherman. 74 exposed people have shown abnormal growths (neolplasms, not tumors) as of 20 years after the testing. The "families of the dead" are one family in Japan, none in the islands. While I deplore the rather monstrous actions of the US military and government vis-a-vis atomic testing in the SP, overstating damages is not going to help.
One other thing - all this is pretty far in the past now, and much of the nation is rather appalled by the testing in the SP, such that I think it would be difficult for the military to start it back up again unless there was some imminent threat. If world opinion is mounting against atomic testing, what does it serve to shame the some long dead men (like Vannevar Bush) about their decisions, when they arguably had reasons they thought were good enough at the time?
One final, final thing (I promise). "This test" (your words) was Crossroads Bravo, held in 1946. The one that caused the death and contamination was Castle Bravo, held in 1954. I can understand some confusion, but I think that perhaps this may have been at least partially intentional to make your point.
@puncheex For clarification, my understanding is the inhabitants of Bikini were relocated in conjunction with the first series of tests, Operation Crossroads, and that Castle Bravo was part of the subsequent series of tests called Operation Castle; but, the two Operations were intimately linked. And, ultimately the point I am trying to make is that such irresponsible abuses of power and blatant disregard for human rights and the environment are a threat to us all, and not a laughing matter.
@00RoninSamurai00: You may have been able to detect that I have not been laughing. YouTube is crawling with kids who have more mouth than brain, and even many such that aren't so young; telling them not to laugh is a comedy magnet. OK, I'll accept that bomb testing is bomb testing.
To us, now, what they did seems unconscionable, but they did have their reasons. In 1946, they were just large explosives to everyone except the scientists who built them; ...
... radioactivity was very poorly known, particularly medically. Tell me, how do you think we would handle the same situation today with what we now know, different from how we handled it in 1946?
@puncheex Oh, there is one other thing I would like to add. The American soldiers who were ordered to conduct the follow-up examinations of the test sites, irradiated naval vessels, etc. were not warned of the dangers of exposure to harmful radiation, and were in fact exposed to harmful levels of radiation that resulted in significant impacts to their health, including cancer.
@00RoninSamurai00: Yup some did, though we'd probably argue about the numbers. Again, I think it was more the result of lack of real knowledge than it was a cruel, callous military nature. Again, would it be better handled today than it was then, do you think?
@puncheex For over twenty years I have studied the 'dark side' of Govt, and as a result of my studies I have learned never to underestimate the cruelty and callousness of those at the top. In America, we have a government within a government. There is the government we see, and then there is the one we don't see, and unfortunately, it is the one we don't see that is really calling the shots, without the burden of accountability. And, It is organized crime at its highest level.
@puncheex Wikipedia provides some general and somewhat sanitized examples of the government's violation of human rights under the heading of "Unethical Human Experimentation in the United States." Wikipedia doesn't say much about it, but the Rockefeller and Bush/Harriman crime families were extensively involved. These two families are of "noble" heritage, and have been working together for over 100 years (Re: E H Harriman, Samuel P. Bush, Frank Rockefeller, John D. Rockefeller).
@puncheex (Cont.) These and a few other ruling class families (i.e. Rothschilds, the Royal Family, etc.) are the real powers behind the govt., and the global economy. They maintain controlling interest in most of the Central Banks of the industrialized world, under the umbrella of the Bank of International Settlements in Basel, Switzerland. They are also the major stockholders of the world's most powerful international banks (G-Sachs, BofA, JPMorgan, Citi, etc.), so they regulate themselves.
@puncheex (Cont. 2) Using their unlimited resources derived through the corrupt system of banking, they have placed their hand-picked cronies into key positions throughout the governments of the world, and have established a stranglehold over the free market through corporate fronts. They work in unity through NGOs such as the Council on Foreign Relations, the Trilateral Commission, The RAND Corp., Brookings Inst., Rockefeller Found., in the US toward the end goal - global oligarchy.
@puncheex The UN was established by these same people as a framework to establish world government. Their plan is to abolish the sovereignty of individual nations, including the US, through the establishment of Free Trade Agreements which are to be evolved into Continental Unions such as the EU, which will fall under the authority of the UN. The Council on Foreign Relations is key in pushing this agenda in the US (Re: "Building a North American Community", available on CFR website).
@puncheex Sorry for the insults, but understating them doesn't help either, and my sources are not "rubbish."
Please search online for the testimony of Neal A. Palafox, MD, MPH before the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Subcommittee on Asia, Pacific, and the Global Environment on May 20, 2010. It provides some important facts that I believe you have overlooked.
@00RoninSamurai00No insult taken, and I'll withdraw my "rubbish". I'll get back to you in a few days on reference; I've got some things that must get done.
Ain't it nice when one can get past the posturing stage to a real discussion? That's what I look for on YT.
@puncheex BTW I totally agree. "We the people" must learn to communicate and behave rationally if we are to learn from each other, work together toward common goals, and protect our civil rights.

@v1vadaja the big boats were affected, they were there to demonstrate the power of the explosion, so that they could have a notion of the destruction the bomb can cause.

00RoninSamurai00 1 year ago
@00RoninSamurai00: Let's run this back again. The island's inhabitants were indeed relocated. As far as I can find, no one died in this or any other US nuclear test, except possibly by industrial accident. This test irradiated no other island. You may be confusing this with a later test which did drop fallout on a native fishing vessel and caused one death on it. The rest of your post is equally well researched rubbish.
puncheex 1 year ago
@puncheex Wikipedia [Bikini Atoll]:
00RoninSamurai00 1 year ago
@puncheex Either you are an idiot, or a liar. You fail to account for the long-term effects, which included multiple deaths from cancer related to contaminated fallout falling on Rongerik Atoll and nuclear contamination of the food supply - all of which is well-documented (re: Project 4.1, etc.). Are you really stupid enough to believe there were no harmful side-effects to detonating an H-bomb in the ocean? Don't be a fool.
00RoninSamurai00 1 year ago
@00RoninSamurai00: To the best of my knowledge (and I've spent some time looking) only one death was attributed to the Castle Bravo shot, the Japanese fisherman. 74 exposed people have shown abnormal growths (neolplasms, not tumors) as of 20 years after the testing. The "families of the dead" are one family in Japan, none in the islands. While I deplore the rather monstrous actions of the US military and government vis-a-vis atomic testing in the SP, overstating damages is not going to help.
puncheex 1 year ago
... Oh, and your name calling isn't helping them or harming me. Discuss I can, you can keep the invective to yourself.
puncheex 1 year ago
One other thing - all this is pretty far in the past now, and much of the nation is rather appalled by the testing in the SP, such that I think it would be difficult for the military to start it back up again unless there was some imminent threat. If world opinion is mounting against atomic testing, what does it serve to shame the some long dead men (like Vannevar Bush) about their decisions, when they arguably had reasons they thought were good enough at the time?
puncheex 1 year ago
One final, final thing (I promise). "This test" (your words) was Crossroads Bravo, held in 1946. The one that caused the death and contamination was Castle Bravo, held in 1954. I can understand some confusion, but I think that perhaps this may have been at least partially intentional to make your point.
puncheex 1 year ago
@puncheex For clarification, my understanding is the inhabitants of Bikini were relocated in conjunction with the first series of tests, Operation Crossroads, and that Castle Bravo was part of the subsequent series of tests called Operation Castle; but, the two Operations were intimately linked. And, ultimately the point I am trying to make is that such irresponsible abuses of power and blatant disregard for human rights and the environment are a threat to us all, and not a laughing matter.
00RoninSamurai00 1 year ago
@00RoninSamurai00: You may have been able to detect that I have not been laughing. YouTube is crawling with kids who have more mouth than brain, and even many such that aren't so young; telling them not to laugh is a comedy magnet. OK, I'll accept that bomb testing is bomb testing.
To us, now, what they did seems unconscionable, but they did have their reasons. In 1946, they were just large explosives to everyone except the scientists who built them; ...
puncheex 1 year ago
... radioactivity was very poorly known, particularly medically. Tell me, how do you think we would handle the same situation today with what we now know, different from how we handled it in 1946?
puncheex 1 year ago
@puncheex Oh, there is one other thing I would like to add. The American soldiers who were ordered to conduct the follow-up examinations of the test sites, irradiated naval vessels, etc. were not warned of the dangers of exposure to harmful radiation, and were in fact exposed to harmful levels of radiation that resulted in significant impacts to their health, including cancer.
00RoninSamurai00 1 year ago
@00RoninSamurai00: Yup some did, though we'd probably argue about the numbers. Again, I think it was more the result of lack of real knowledge than it was a cruel, callous military nature. Again, would it be better handled today than it was then, do you think?
puncheex 1 year ago
@puncheex For over twenty years I have studied the 'dark side' of Govt, and as a result of my studies I have learned never to underestimate the cruelty and callousness of those at the top. In America, we have a government within a government. There is the government we see, and then there is the one we don't see, and unfortunately, it is the one we don't see that is really calling the shots, without the burden of accountability. And, It is organized crime at its highest level.
00RoninSamurai00 1 year ago
@puncheex Wikipedia provides some general and somewhat sanitized examples of the government's violation of human rights under the heading of "Unethical Human Experimentation in the United States." Wikipedia doesn't say much about it, but the Rockefeller and Bush/Harriman crime families were extensively involved. These two families are of "noble" heritage, and have been working together for over 100 years (Re: E H Harriman, Samuel P. Bush, Frank Rockefeller, John D. Rockefeller).
00RoninSamurai00 1 year ago
@puncheex (Cont.) These and a few other ruling class families (i.e. Rothschilds, the Royal Family, etc.) are the real powers behind the govt., and the global economy. They maintain controlling interest in most of the Central Banks of the industrialized world, under the umbrella of the Bank of International Settlements in Basel, Switzerland. They are also the major stockholders of the world's most powerful international banks (G-Sachs, BofA, JPMorgan, Citi, etc.), so they regulate themselves.
00RoninSamurai00 1 year ago
@puncheex (Cont. 2) Using their unlimited resources derived through the corrupt system of banking, they have placed their hand-picked cronies into key positions throughout the governments of the world, and have established a stranglehold over the free market through corporate fronts. They work in unity through NGOs such as the Council on Foreign Relations, the Trilateral Commission, The RAND Corp., Brookings Inst., Rockefeller Found., in the US toward the end goal - global oligarchy.
00RoninSamurai00 1 year ago

Then, I hope you will reconsider your position.
And again, I apologize for the insults.
00RoninSamurai00 1 year ago
@00RoninSamurai00No insult taken, and I'll withdraw my "rubbish". I'll get back to you in a few days on reference; I've got some things that must get done.
Ain't it nice when one can get past the posturing stage to a real discussion? That's what I look for on YT.
