It is in E Dorian. You can tell because playing a C over the IV chord (A) is dissonant. Also, if the root chord is minor, the fourth is major, and the fifth is minor, it is a Dorian based song.
You could use the normal minor scale over it, but hanging on the C would sound pretty dissonant, mainly over the IV chord. You could always just use the E minor pentatonic scale and it would sound fine.
You can play what would look like a B minor scale over this tune - you would actually be playing E dorian in context, but for the sake of playability let's say it's B minor scale :)
@Kris273 If you were playing over a C major chord you wouldn't say that you can play A minor over it. Yes, there would be some truth to it because both scales have the same notes and anybody decent will make it sound good. The fact of the matter is that you aren't playing in A minor, you are playing in C major. Suggesting that you're playing in A minor or D dorian, or B locrian doesn't make sense because you're focusing on the chord tones (C, E, G).
@Kris273 I said A minor because more people would understand that over saying A Aoelian. E Dorian and D Ionian have the same notes, but what scale is being used depends on the tonal center.
You can tell someone to just play the notes of D major and play what sounds good and they'll do good because they'll naturally stick to the chord tones (E G B). But they aren't playing D major, the are playing E Dorian. The tonal center in this track is obviously not D, it is E.
@natepepin09 Dude its obviously an E dorian chord progression . That said it does not mean you cant play other notes of the scale.... What about B harmonic minor? That works really well. So long as you stick to the appropriate Mode in this minor it will sound cool. Now what if you added to the chord tones? Or are you saying you can't do that either?
lol so many people confuse their modes. i dont think im a genius or anything, but this funky groove works with the full scale of E Minor as well as using dorian! I'd suggest trying E Dorian which is also B Natural Minor or D Major as Well as E minor / G Major. They both work in their respective place
Hey, I play a good bit of metal and this was a good deal of fun. Em so familiar, but the slower tempo and fun influence made me have to think of different runs and patterns. Thanks!
I loved the track, and without seeing the previous comment I to noticed E Dorian, for future reference, when ever there is 2 major chords a full step apart in the progression, that would imply they are the 4th and 5th chord of a major key. In this case, the main progression has an A Maj and G Maj. That is the 5 and 4 chord of the key of D Maj. You are using the E Minor as the root chord so this is E dorian. But aside from all that, the track just grooves man. Love it. It is fun to play over.
@MaxBGuitar Yeah maybe you're right...I haven't tried to play it fast. because I'm not that fast on guitar. :) But I can imagine it will sound good when played fast.
With a short backing track its best used to practice your composition skills, atleast that what I usually do if I find a short backing track that I like.
this track seems to play better in E harmonic minor but i dont think its B minor it probebly just sounds good becuase B is the 5th of E and sounds good to land on
@zubestr I said B minor because most people know the minor and major scale. It's E dorian, but it has the same notes as B minor so it sounds the same. I like to mix between E pentatonic minor and E dorian and on the chorus I add some E half/whole scale (diminished). IMO harmonic minor doesn't fit because of the major 7th but you can play what you want. :)
@zubestr Yeah according to theory the harm. minor shouldn't fit in here. But music is a subjective thing...if you like then it's right! You should try the E dorian though.
well i've got a les paul already. and i agree i love it, it's my favorite guitar. the thing about the tele's is that i like their sound. they have really cool cleans and the dirty's are nice.
You know, I think a really major part of the sound comes from the amp. If you want a clean sound, you can certainly achieve that on a Les Paul given the right amp. Like the one I'm about to buy, the Laney LC30. Certainly don't play it through a Marshall for a start.
well the next amp I'm looking to buy is a mesa boogie. right now i've got a lower end les paul. i've got the gibson les paul studio. but let me tell you, the tones i can get on it are awesome. i mean yeah most of your sound does come from your amp, but out of the fender line the tele's are the only ones i like. i'm not a big fender dude. i usually like more ballsy tones (like the les pauls). the tele's are the ones that i've heard that can get that sound.
Yeah I prefer Les Pauls too. Although much of it is probably psychological: I love GnR and just love the look of the Les Paul. I just bought a Les Paul Darkfire - have you heard about them? To be honest, I should have just bought a Standard. The Darkfire has too much novel technology which confuses me and I don't really have time for. It's still a very nice guitar though.
oh i hear you, i love les pauls too. when i was like 11 years old i knew that was a guitar i had to have one day. but yes i've heard of the the darkfire, that's the les paul with the robot technology isn't it?
Yup. It's got second generation robot technology. The first generation Les Pauls robots were simply called 'Robots'. They're a few years old now. The Darkfires have much quicker tuning capabilities as well as several other tricks and gadgets.
I haven't even begun to explore its technology. I just never get round to it. I just prefer to play!
really? you think so? i play a tele and find it very comfortable. i suppose it just needs some getting used to. i find les pauls a bitch to play personally but thats just a personal POV.
Great Track. It is fun to play over. How did you make this? The other commenter is correct. This song is in e minor. So the way I approached it is to play the "g major" modes, so a dorian, b Phrygian, e aeolian, etc. However, e dorian works well also especially in that second part/bridge. e minor pentatonic scales also work well.
@ioannisdenton actually you can play any minor scale as well. Like Harmonic, Frygian(not sure about spelling), melodic or when you are very creative you can use any of oriental scales like gipsys. Don't know how you but there was no problem with me when I was trying these scales.
