Twitter is not chat-I use it as an information source on the Tech stuff. I follow alot of Geeks and they do post some intereting stuff no and again. I just dont get the whole I woke up tired/Going to take a shower stuff. I @ maybe 2x at max to a person usually if it is interesting.

It depends on how you use it. I have a group of friends all using Twitter and we are able to have conversations quite easily. Twitter feeds crosspost to Facebook which augments the conversations. But I'm just a person, not a brand, and I use TweetDeck, not Twitter's website and it works well for me and my friends.
I have facebook, so I think Twitter is pretty much useless... unless you're a busy person... and like seangworld said, Facebook and Twitter are nearly the same..
your status message on facebook and myspace is virtually the same exact thing EXCEPT on facebook and myspace you can actually track your conversations. so if you can do this on fb or myspace, why the hell would anyone want to use twitter??? it just doesn't make any sense to me.
I think this is slightly narrow minded. You can easily have a conversation on Twitter. You send one, receive one, read it, and send one again. With more then 3-4 people however it can get a little complicated, but with 3-4 people it's very doable.
As I see it, Twitter is a blank slate. Not really designed for just one specific purpose. You can have conversations there, therefore you SHOULD (if you want) have conversations there. I personally use it for health/mood/project status updates.

I'll have to disagree on this one. I have a twitter client called Twhirl and it gathers updates as they come in and it's quite easy to follow conversations on. I find myself doing it for short periods on more than one occasion. Although I'll agree it's not good for extended conversation.
To me Twitter is only good for certain updates. For example subscribing to CAG to track the latest game deals. As for chatting and conversation I would save that for im clients or chatrooms.

That is so true...I love techies and gadgets social media and whatnot, but I don't tie myself to it. i use it as a means to communicate and keep in touch to those far away from me. But face to face is ALWAYS better. sadly, some people are just not into that anymore. Sad times.

Yahoo groups is another good place to have a conversation. Yahoo groups can also be for conversations around a theme, spirituality, healthcare, a particular craft, etc...
@podcastbard, Yahoo groups is a joke, so is 360 and that new micro-blogging platform they launched. It's the same old platform just different names and branding. Yahoo and AOL aren't game-changers when it comes to Social Media. They're more focused on advertising and search.
Twitter is in fact a conversation-driven community tool. It just depends on how you use it. Chris, the way you operate your brand is unique, however most "Mom&Pop" start-ups and small businesses choose to use Twitter as an interactive mechanism to engage with their audience. There are many ways to use twitter. It's how you use the @ and hash function which determines the conversation.
I agree though, Facebook, Friendfeed and other tools are much more suited for conversations as they offer threading. Twitter only allows 140 characters, so you won't be getting much out of a conversation. You must remember, "Conversation" is a marketing word, it just means where the action is happening, not necessarily that Twitter is literally a tool for conversations, she prob. meant it's a good tool to get your voice across and heard as a blogger etc.

you can track journalist or subjects your interested by following them. IE CNN, Chirs P, or whoever.

I believe Twitter was used for basically, anything you want it to be.
So that's not to say that maybe you, Chris, don't want to use it as a conversation tool, though many other people do.
I agree, it shouldn't be used as a conversation tool, though it is quite nifty to do so.

Yahoo groups is another good place to have a conversation. Yahoo groups can also be for conversations around a theme, spirituality, healthcare, a particular craft, etc...

@podcastbard, Yahoo groups is a joke, so is 360 and that new micro-blogging platform they launched. It's the same old platform just different names and branding. Yahoo and AOL aren't game-changers when it comes to Social Media. They're more focused on advertising and search.

Twitter is in fact a conversation-driven community tool. It just depends on how you use it. Chris, the way you operate your brand is unique, however most "Mom&Pop" start-ups and small businesses choose to use Twitter as an interactive mechanism to engage with their audience. There are many ways to use twitter. It's how you use the @ and hash function which determines the conversation.

I agree though, Facebook, Friendfeed and other tools are much more suited for conversations as they offer threading. Twitter only allows 140 characters, so you won't be getting much out of a conversation. You must remember, "Conversation" is a marketing word, it just means where the action is happening, not necessarily that Twitter is literally a tool for conversations, she prob. meant it's a good tool to get your voice across and heard as a blogger etc.
