  • The very first line he plays is stunning!

  • Is it in Bb?

  • Oh my god, I saw a sextuplet

  • Great! Thanks for posting.

  • FANTASTIC! I love this bebop by the masters. The animated notation is REALLY COOL, to watch the solo alive on the staff. I've never seen it quite like this. THANKS

  • Maybe the baddest soloist of all time on any instrument, his phrasing is just incredible here.

  • It´s very humbling as a musician to watch this. Incredible!

  • the omnibook he is using is in Bb, so clarinets, tenor sax and soprano sax can read this and play the same pitches as the recording. The recording is off of an alto saxophone. :)

  • you can tell what Cannonball was checkin out! very similar sounds here

  • I believe I saw some low A's in there. Is that a mistake or did Bird have a low A alto?

  • @chaniejbernard what your seeing now is the song in b flat (for tenor) the e flat version of the song has the notes placed higher (but you probably already knew that)

  • @jdogwar yeah I did, but thanks for answering my question!

  • Dan, how did you make this happen (synch of notation with the music)?

  • AMAZING!!

  • fuck!! I need this in concert! I hate transposing!

  • This is amazing.

  • IM ACTUALLY PLAYING THE SONG WITH the OMNI BOOK AND USING THE VIDEO AT THE SAME TIME AND ITS FOR EB ALTO SAX NOT FOR Bb tenor sorry.the actual sheet music is for tenro sax correct, but when you hear the pitch hes playing is alto sax which is the book im using,so i dont understand why they would use Bb transcription and Eb background

  • IM ACTUALLY PLAYING THE SONG WITH the OMNI BOOK AND USING THE VIDEO AT THE SAME TIME AND ITS FOR EB ALTO SAX NOT FOR Bb tenor sorry.

  • This transcription is scanned from Jamey Aebersold's "Charlie Parker Ominbook" put out by Atlantic Music Corporation in 1978. It's for Bb instruments, but there are concert and Eb. versions. Personally, even though I play tenor and soprano (and some alto), I prefer a concert pitch score. After some practice, it makes life a lot easier -- you're not always looking for a transposed score. The original of this song, of course, is in F.

  • This is definitely not for Eb alto.

  • thats not the he is playing in i know that for a fact i ply this song

  • The notes are for a Bb Tenor Sax

  • amazing visuals.

  • Animated sheet music. What a concept!

  • interesting that you post this transcription. its in the wrong key, your omni book must be for Bb instruments. There is no A below middle C on a saxophone, unless you play a Bb, lip down, and cover half your bell, which is a clever trick, not a practical way of playing sax. Bird played alto, which would be transposed up a 5th from this transcription.

This could really only be played by a trumpet, as a tenor sax player would need to put everything up an octave or ghost the A

  • 1:18!!! The saxophone can't even go that low!!!

  • @549heydrew ya it can

  • @dancohen

what do the letters mean that are above the staff like (G,B7,E-,A7,and so on) I have to play this on sax with my band director and i need help breaking it down. thx :D

  • @wario770 they are the chords, for example G would be Gmajor, B7 is Bmajor flat seventh, E- is an E minor chord, A7 is a flat seventh etc. this will help you out, google Jazz chord symbols and choose the first option, sorry i cant provide a link :)

  • god exists !

  • @orqsilva One explanation I've heard for why highly creative genius types are self-destructive is that many are manic depressives. Many artists who experience periods of manic energy, expressiveness and creativity also experience extreme depression and exhaustion after these peaks. I've found this to be generally true for most of the highly gifted artists I've met.

  • how do you watch it at 720p? and what does 720p even mean? Thanks!

  • A genius creates something new under the sun, that's the purpose of "genius" from an evolutionary point of view. A perfect solo. The question is why do "genius" types like Bird, who bring so much beauty, truth, and even intellectual accomplishment to world burn out so quickly and often suffer poverty, neglect and lack of recognition. At the same time dangerous scumbags, like our potential next pres. gain such prestige and power.

  • They say there's "nothing new under the sun"--in other words, human experience is so universal that new things (albeit, with slight variations) have been destined to happen. Here it's different. Here, Bird and a few others listened to what came before, and galvanized a new art form and mode of expression. It may be rooted in earlier jazz, and especially classical composition, but nothing can explain the phrasing, pick-up notes, passing tones, and pyrotechnics. It's something new under the sun.

  • I'm very impressed! I am a composer and would love to learn how to treat my music to this formatting. Can it be done on Digital Performer or Sibelius or some other publicly available software?

  • very cool idea!

  • oh SHEET music, i totally missread that

  • This is really helpful to people who don't read music well like myself. Thanks for sharing!

  • 0:55 holy crap...

  • @SaxMaster922 - that's exactly what I was thinking!

  • I learn so much just by analyzing the chords and his ideas and what he is doing in theory, the application is the best thanks :D

  • also, whilst im here, does he quote someone at 1:15?

  • in this video, is the piece in C major or A minor?

  • low A flats? how?

  • @jacobtworks its transposed mate, its a 3rd lower than an Eb alto sax would read it

  • AWESOME tune! How are you making these videos?? They are very cool...congrats!

  • Thanks who ever did this. Pretty cool. I just got The Omnibook today and wanted to hear a version of it to read along with, and wouldn't you know it i find this. Thanks again, nice editing, not sure how u did it.

  • This thing is insanely difficult.

  • @anabellik Just finished learning in on guitar. I have it all down perfectly at 120 BPM, and I'm almost good at 140BPM. It's nearly impossible to play it at 208BPM on a guitar!

  • What's the harmonic structured and scale or what key is in it?

  • @n64wilbert it's in F

  • chord structure reminds me of green dolphin street.

  • Hi, quick question: In my real book this song goes in F, but here its in C... and it says "Charlie Parker" in the corner so why did they change it? And is Tommy Flanagans (<3) version in C or F?

  • @Gfromdastreet the song is in F. It's on here in the key of G so Bb instruments like trumpet or tenor sax can play it and match the notes on the recording. Charlie Parker wrote it. Tommy's version is in F.

  • Hi, quick question: In my real book this song goes in F, but here its in C... and it says "Charlie Parker" in the corner so why did they change it?

  • @indestructable61 Oops, my bad. Concert Gb's, not Ab's. sorry, amateur mistake...

  • Hey can you email this to me?

    dtyronet94@yahoo.com

    Please and Thank you

  • Pfffew! Parker had very tough improvisations and very tough tunes. He is just a master that nobody could equal! Very Nice!

  • @Thekingofpop1958 matter of oppinion ,,,cannonball Adderley was im my view better

  • Awesome! How can you do that?

  • Brilliant

    Genius synchronization !!!!

  • I really like the chord changes...they're a bit less out there than on modern charts.

  • is this in concert pitch, Saxophone goes down to low Bb, this goes to low Ab

  • @Indestructable61 The Omnibook comes in Eb and Bb, If it's the Bb transcription likely hood is that Parker's hitting some concert Bb's. It's written with Ab because of trumpet/any other Bb instrument that doesn't happen to be a sax. >.< It bothers me sometimes when I'm reading off it for the first time. I'll be boppin' away and then low A or Ab will pop up and I get thrown off for a brief second. haha.

  • @MJPTHA3RD It comes in a C concert version as well, I know :)

  • I LOVE 1:29 when he ends the phrase on the flat 5.

  • ahhh... This reminds me of little bill lol

  • man im loving doing an analysis of this for school..... not

  • ugh, he makes it sound so easy!!! I got to sing this for my final in two weeks, wish me luck!

  • charlie parker = BEAST ON SAX

  • thats in the key of B flat and that is a tenor sax not alto but it is beatiful anyways

  • @Dan68ish tenor sax you cant play a high e that high on a tenor. plus a tenor carries a heavier sound. i can see how you would think of it as a tenor. i thought it was at first too

  • @Dan68ish tenor sax you cant play a high e that high on a tenor. plus a tenor carries a heavier sound. i can see how you would think of it as a tenor. i thought it was at first too

  • not in the real tone of alto sax ;)

  • Loved the solo, the animation, all that good stuff...

But Charlie plays an Alto saxophone....how is there an A below the staff? What key is this transcription in? It looks much too low on the staff to be in Eb (not to mention, again, that A)...

I still enjoy the animation and song, just curious as to what the transcription is in?

  • @ProfBlahson1 this is a Bb score (for tenor sax). the tune is in concert key F (in a Eb score for alto sax is D).

  • I love how Bird makes every note that comes out of his Sax sound good. It's quite a rarity to hear on other players. It inspires me to make EVERY note that comes out of the guitar to sound great.

  • I'd have to pray to JC to help me get line 12.

  • Your vids are AMAZING!!! Thank you so much.

  • How do you this Dan?

  • How do you do this Dan? I loved you Giant Steps one and this one too!

  • This is brilliant! I have to play this song for a music test at school and I was staring at my music thinking "how does this gooooooooo" This will definitely help :P

  • this isnt the Eb or Bb omnibook cuz it had an A bellow the staff

  • you a tenor player?

  • Dan, which of his albums contains this recording?

  • i absolutely LOVE those videos with transciption. not because of the functionality (well, i guess i'm gonna dig some of them phrases), but it just looks so cool :)

  • This is a very useful resource - thanks for taking the time to put it up! Well done!

Bird lives forever through his music~

  • yeah! bellissimo!

  • whats it mean when a "-" comes after the letter?

  • @sdmiz that means it's a minor chord.

  • Actually, a minor seventh chord.

  • @dancohen Am i suposed to be able to read that ??? as a musician ?

  • @drsantoss Read what? notes? I hope so, because it helps. If you want this solo transcription, go buy an omnibook, you'll treasure it for the rest of your life.

  • @thelbronius at that speed in the video ?

  • @dancohen actually a minor 7th chord

  • @sdmiz it means for example the e or a chord is minor

  • Hahaha all the ties looks like smiley faces with sunglasses. Makes me smile every time I see one.

  • @rfoxfa1 it does! ha!

  • @rfoxfa1

thanks, now i cant stop smiling whenever i see it! haha :D

  • @rfoxfa1 HAHA! Now I can't stop gigggling at the end of phrases! They really do look like little smiley faces

  • @rfoxfa1 Man, you've changed my life forever.

  • This is AWESOME!!! :O

  • There's no key signature at the beginning so it's in C and the transcription is putting the sharps and flats where they belong?

  • Comment removed

  • thanx Dan

  • thanks great job!

  • How did you make the sheet music animation for this video?

  • Thank you!!!

  • The chords and solo were transcribed in the key of b-flat

  • Great job! Concert pitch next time :-)

  • THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • wow.

  • yeahh!!!

  • So cool.

  • Dan, you are awesome!

  • @mphlives hey thanks!

  • @dancohen

please keep these coming...they are fucking awesome

learning to read faster while listening to the greats...much appreciated

  • @mphlives I have to agree with U. and thx Dan for this!!!

  • yeah, its in Bb

I don't think even the great Bird was good enough to play low A and Ab

  • Is this written in Eb for Alto? Not that I would use this, even though I'm a Trombone player, I would rather transcribe it myself. These are really cool videos though.

  • Let me guess, you're a tenor player?? Haha, awesome work. I will be showing this to my students.

  • Another piece that I am doomed to watch repeatedly, this is so amazing dude. How do you do it?

  • stepsmusic waiting

  • Great work Dan!

  • Another masterpiece created by yourself! Congrats!

  • whoever you are you make reading more exciting!

  • Charlie Parkers Omnibook was like my bible when I was in college.

  • I would like to suggest that for your future videos that you zoom out more like the Giant Steps video. Its easier to follow along when you can see the complete bar

  • This is awesome. It´s great to see the difference between bird and trane side by side. The first time I saw this I was blown away (giant steps) but i´ve watched it so many times that it´s a part of my life now.

  • How did you do this? It's so awesome.
