the song is meant to be, like in a way, sarcastic

no one wanted Johnny and no one loved him, so that led him to religion where he made himself think, kind of out of desperateness, the lord would love him

it kind of all comes out in the line "he hid his life behind the walls of religion", like where he found false happiness

it's such a tragic song!
