@variablast Not necessarily, at least to the second part. Some of the most serious illnesses have been helped, even cured outright by "alternative medical practices" (this is a very vague term of course, and a lot of good stuff has been kept down by big pharmaceuticals).

If you don't have some sort of societal "guardrail" to guide the entire process forward without going out of bounds, all you get is a self serving anarchy and a "holier than thou" or "I don't give a shit attitude", which is what the counter culture gravitated toward. Sure there were alternative lifestyle advances in food Co-ops, meditation and healing techniques, etc. but the end result among todays youth is a bastardized nihilism which serves no good and no God 40 years after it's inception.

the problem with counterculture in our time is how the media is a predator for anything that stands outside of the mainstream. this scheme is literally worked into the business model, and agents will go out and find those who are so extreme. so any attempt to stand outside will simply be sucked up into the mainstream, and there you will find it in MTV. i think he has made some good points though.
