737's have the highest dispatch reliability of any airliner. The 737 is also much more fuel efficient than the MD-80. I'm an MD-80 Captain and the only thing better than the 737 is the cockpit. The 737 cockpit is smaller and more ergonomically screwed up. I'd just as soon pass on the 737 and go back to the 757, which is the best airliner ever made.
Whoever talks shit about the DC-9/MD-80 Series doesent know shit when it comes to commercial aviation. They are some of the most comfortable and reliable aircraft ever built. The same cant be said for Boeings 737-800 ugly cramjet.
hey guys. hello. i am a pilot for aa and i am FO in the md-83 program. our 83's are 9 years old which we mostly use. on the other hand our 80's are 14 years old but we do our checks for them every single month. so guys dont say what you dont know. it is one of the best airccraft i have ever flown. it is also more fuel efficient than the 737.
American Airline is making money becasue the refuse to buy new planes.... These MD-80's are 20-25 years old. Being used all day long/everyday...Stay away from the MD-80.. They should have been retired 10 years ago.
I agree! All MD-80's need to be replaced!! With either of their mid-range counterparts, the Airbus 319's/320's more fuel efficient, more ecofriendly, generally quieter anywhere on the plane. MD-80's are unfit to fly no matter how well maintained....Down with MD!
there noisier, most are less efficient than most boeing, and they have a worse crash record. And nobody say that boeing has had more crashes, because thats true, but they have a smaller percentage than airbus.
Not all planes are noisy. I am have been flying on the MD-80 for 7 year's the plane is not that bad really. It all depends on the type of engines you choose for the plane some engines are noisy some arn't.
The MD-80 sucks. Has to be one of the noisiest planes Ive been on. Thank god AA is deciding to phase these inefficient, gas guzzling piece of shit planes out of their fleet with quieter and state of the art 737-800s.
Why? Maybe for that reason he/she seated you at the back. I have done that before as a checkin agent. HEHE Just for you info though, the 737-800 were brought onboard mainly to replace their 727 fleet not the MD80s. The MD80s fleet is very very large, and AA has not figured out its replacement as yet. Expect to be in the fleet for quite sometime to come.
As i keep saying it is all relative to where you sit. If you sit at the front of and MD80s there is no way you consider a 757 quieter. If you sit however closer to the back (where the engines are) it is obviously going to be a louder experience.
The Boeing 737-800 sucks. It's ugly/looks like any other jet flying today, Its uncomfortable, and its a 737. The MD-80 Series sound awesome, are very comfortable, and have served American and Delta very well. Delta and American combined have over 300 of them. They are one of the most reliable aircraft ever build. The only bad thing about them is they use a lot of fuel.
Also, If you sit anywhere in front of the wing on an MD-80 Series jet you would be surprised. It is one of the most quiet aircraft. You cant beat the whine of the P&W JT8D's. They are one of my favorite aircraft flying today.

Some are barely 10 years old, i.e. ex-TWA ones

United/Copa (with planes 5-7 years old on average) are up there with some of the youngest fleets, so you get what you pay for...EASE OF MIND.

Go talk to Northwest first with their 40 year old DC-9s before you talk trash about American's MD80s.

airbuses are junk.

Wow, tell me something I don't know! But how did Boeing come into this dispute??? All I was insulting was Mcdonnell Douglas's MD-80;
I like boeing's line of aircraft, it's actually my favorite!

I've been on an MD-80, It really is noisy. The 757 is 1000000% quieter.
