I'm putting it out there to all those ZERO 7 fans what's your favourite tune by them! May prove to be more difficult than you think, narrowing it down to just one. If so and you'd like to engage which is your favourite song and why?
I'm a huge Zero 7 fan and as much as I hate to say this, this is by far their weakest album. I think I played it about twice and found one decent song.
I'm a huge Zero 7 fan and as much as I hate to say this, this is by far their weakest album. I think I played it about twice and found one decent song.
I quite like this different direction, they are producers after all and can therefore make well crafted music, easily, whether it works as well as their debut is another matter, this seems edgier, which is good. The guitar riff does remind me of the XX. I'm glad their still around, although I did notice a 'best of' came out straight after, maybe to cushion the blow of low sales?
I disagree. Saw them live, and it was magnificent! Every true musician must be willing to experiment and evolve. They will only get better with time. Open your mind and give it a chance to grow on, and with you.
Only thing I can say about this album is I don't like it(compare to their previous albums). I think Zero7 is a perfect band when they're putting artsy style in pop music, but this album is just to much for them and for us. There are many experimental bands who can do better jobs on this kind of music. So I would bet Zero7 gonna come back with much much more simple sound, can be the simpliest album ever.
@miraclecure73 I can make a few similarish artists you could look into- Air, Dimitri in Paris, Royksopp, Jimi Tenor, Gus Gus, Thievery Corporation, maybe also St Germain, Kruder & Dorfmeisterand and The Cinematic Orchestra. All good, I hope you find something.
Not feeling the new Zero 7...not one bit. There's nothing wrong with going in a new direction and experimenting....but this is just not my taste, it sounds like a totally different band. If I were introduced to this song I would've never imagined that they made classics such as "Morning Song", "Likufanele", "Destiny", etc...
@munter86 hi mate forgive my ignorance but has sia left? i hope not but do love this band still but im gonna be a tight arse and wait 4 the album 2 come out cheaper, later in the year. money's tight.
This is the only good song of the entire album. The rest of the album was very disappointing. I am going to forget they came up with it, because the 5 albums before this were before their time.
The only reason I got into them Is because of this, Its very cutting edge and not anything like there old stuff I have heard which I think is a good thing!
The new album sucks! I love Zero 7 since 2005 when I first heard Simple Things and When It Falls. The two albuns are masterpieces! Now, it seems they lost their way. What happened anyway? I'm too frustraded about it...
shame that people seem to look upon bands like Pearl jam and hope that they can replicate their old music. I always see talent from a band meaning being able to completely change direction. Personally I love the new PJ album. But then thats what makes us all diverse I guess!
Lovin the comments! Saw them in Manchester - average to be fair. But.....still remain my fave band. This is a grower - but agreed maybe trying too hard. The Garden I feel remains the best album. Each to their own. Sia is GREATLY missed - she was the key to the success.
I saw them yesterday at Brighton, the new singer Eska plays in a different league of Sia,....there was no male singer, I liked the second singer Olivia, great job... but overall a bit disappointing from one of my favorites band
I like it alot. I'm pretty sure since this is just a single that Sia will be present on the album. They basicaly jump started her career, so she owes them. BIG TIME!!
THis is a bit more upbeat, but you can't stay gold forever......
Your correct what you say about Zero 7's first two albums. I also prefer their chilled tunes however on listening to their new album Yeah Ghost there are tunes like that on it: Pop Art Blue, The Road & Swing all on Youtube now and the mixture of tunes on the new album work very well.
The lack of Mozez saddens me. Why couldn't they have kept that lush orchestral sound from Simple Things? That's the main reason I liked the album. End Theme, This World and I Have Seen were great!! Even 'Look Up' from 'When It Falls' was brilliant. This album just doesn't have that same feeling. It's like it went in the direction of pop. Remember, they're a *downtempo* band. This ain't downtempo. :(
Simple Things was great, as was When It Falls. I think they mirrored Simple Things on the second album because the formula worked. But if they just keep doing the same thing, they're not really progressing as artists. Love the original sound for what it was, and decide whether you like the new material for yourself or not, but don't hate on them for trying new things. I don't think they have labeled themselves a downtempo band, other people did. I love that they're growing. Ghost Symbol is sick!
Your point is well taken. But I certainly wasn't implying that they should repeat that formula over and over again, nor was I "hating" them for trying something new. Such was the case with another one of my favorite musicians: DJ Shadow. His album "Endtroducing" was an absolute classic. His other albums, however, weren't nearly as good in my opinion. He even said himself "doing Endtroducing over and over. .that was never the plan."
@Cheduff Here here! I agree, and that's what endears them to me. You know you are going to get something different for every album and it's STILL familiar and STILL consistently good.
I think they have become more electronic and edgy since their first two albums. But I have their first two albums and there is no point in replicating them. Sure, I think Simple Things is an absolute classic, but maybe thats just because it was like a new discovery. Progression is all part of the journey though and Im in. I see what your saying though, its perhaps not so much a new direction as just exploring the current one further.

Cheduff 2 years ago 18
Not at all (imho). Albums 1 and 2 were much more chilled, smooth and soulful.
The garden and yeah ghost seem much more funk and groove orientated.
What I need from Zero 7 is tunes to ground myself when I'm on a comedown. Their first album was a bible for that.
