i am 14. My dad showed this to me when it first came out (i think i was about five) and i was so scared i hid behind the sofa and couldn't sleep. it still freaks me out a bit, but its just the past reinfluencing again.
When I first saw the video to this song, I thought it was out of this world. I randomly had a thought to type it in and watch it again... so glad I did! One of the best music videos I believe I've EVER seen for the sole fact it stays with you for the longest age!
i remember hating this song when i first heard it in seventh grade, but i really like it now.
but damn. some of you people take yourselves too damn seriously. who honestly cares if a band is "derivative" or "overrated" or any of that? all that should matter is that you like the music. everyone has good taste as long as they like something for genuine reasons and don't put other people down.
Conventional spoon is the kind of person who avoids liking a wine that tastes good for fear it might lack impact and relevance on other wines. Musical education can further the ears appreciation, but over-analysis can lead to great discontentment. Many listeners have become far too jaded, especially when it comes to slagging off modern bands for re-running a Beatles hook or criticising a new song of lacking emotion. I'm not a big SFA fan (yet) but I can easily see their appeal...

I saw the video once on mtv when it was shown. Loved the video. Fell in love with the song. And I have not forgotten it since. Unforgettable and creative. Best video I've seen.
i'm no ironist; due partly to the fact that i don't take my favourite bands as seriously as a lot of people, and partly to my security in the knowledge that my taste in music is unimpeachably good anyway, i'm able to harbour a healthy and genuine affection for a number of bands which i acknowledge to be terrible in various respects. hurray!
if you'd like me to put your mind at rest on this point then for a small fee i'll send you the raw data print-outs (abridged and simplified for your comprehension) derived from my exhaustive and absolutely objective analysis of all music ever released for public consumption, which, as you may be aware, i published to universal critical acclaim earlier this year.
Ironist? No, that's not a word. Ironisticalism is, yes, but not ironist, surely? Actually, no, you're right - Ironist - somebody who irons clothes professionally.
I wasn't being sarcastic and I wasn't making fun of him, or anybody for that matter. It was a joke - a genuine joke! It's my sense of humour, I'm afraid - I must apologise for it. Believe what you will.
not obsessed with them; don't hate them. sfa is a perfectly reasonable band which is nevertheless - in my meticulously well-considered opinion - somewhat overrated.
In what way would you consider them over rated? Given they have had very limitted 'chart success' and get almost no airplay on radio or t.v.
Compared to the many other 'chart topping' bands and solo artists that infest the airwaves these days they are anything but over rated. In fact you could argue they are totally under rated, no?
of course degree of chart success has little bearing on the question; i'm talking about the high regard in which they're held by discerning music fans and serious critics - this should be obvious. if essentially fairly derivative music is enough to make pitchfork media reviwers touch themselves and to encourage rough trade to snap them up in all eagerness then i should hardly consider myself unjustified in saying that they're a bit overrated.
With all due respect most music is derivative, is it not?
There have been very few bands/musicians producing any truly ground breaking music over the past few decades. Every band has been influenced by somebody. Music is progressive but can also be cyclical, do you not agree?
The primary reason why SFA are held with such high regard by critics and discerning music fans is due to the diversity of influence in their music.
well, given that you've paid me all due respect i suppose i'll deign to respond to your post but this is the last time i'm going to comment on this video. yes, you are right: all music is of course to some degree derivative. also, i've obviously exaggerated my dislike for sfa in order to emphasise the point that i think they're a bit overrated; sfa is, of course, a pretty good band by the general standards of popular music.
they are definately not over-rated, due to the fact you said they are good vs the general standard of popular music, I conclude you have just contradicted yourself..
however, i feel that the most important and compelling bands are generally those that are the most original. the most original bands, in turn, are generally those that feature a unique and inimitable front-man or front-woman whose personality comes through strongly in the detail of the lyrics and in the distinctive, uninhibited and convincing manner in which they're delivered.
Mr Spoon, you really can't see Gruff Rhyss's personality shining through in SFA songs? So you're looking for lyrice delivered in a'distinctive, uninhibited and convincing manner'. I suggest you start with the The Man Don't Give a Fuck. Admittedly the point he's trying to make with that song is quite subtle, but I think a man of your obvious intellect will get there eventually...
