I don't think this is a breakthrough. The treatment for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder states that "treatment aims to reduce symptoms by encouraging you to recall the event, express your feelings, and gain some sense of control over the experience." So, by going over a painful event repeatedly mentally or acting it out (even if it's something as small as a thorn prick) a person can feel mentally 'healed' and can move on, so to speak. That's my $.02.
