We have a load control department. They use the 190 pound figure and the actual weight of cargo and passenger checked baggage. For us, the ZFW is uploaded automatically via ACARS after we get the closeout, which is usually just as we're pushing back.
You're right, the low cost index is common when we are planned to arrive early. Good catch.
I'm just waiting for the day that the 'average' figure for a given flight is well below what is the actual weight e.g the coin convention flight - A/P had a hell of a time on that!
just a question Kent, i dont know if its in your blog, but how many hours u did before getting into a company, just wondering cause in my country we need 1000 hours, i think its a lot, and i v heard that in some places its like 200h. thanks and great vids!
Well, it depends on the airline and the economy. Less than a thousand for a commuter, flying turboprops or, in some cases RJ's. 2,000 and up for major airlines.
This is all subject to change in the U.S. with new legislation that's being proposed raising the minimum here to 1,500 hours.
Thanks for the answer Kent. I think i just need a lot more than my 50 hours hehe. there so many questions to ask, but i think they will be answered one day... well at least i hope so.
It's called the Control Display Unit or CDU, and is the interface for the Flight Management Computer which takes flight information and calculates certain things vital to the operation of the aircraft.

A Cost Index of 19..?!
You must of had some hefty tailwinds!
Or, left well before the scheduled departure time!
As a question if you don't mind Kent:
For ZFW, do you take pax weight as 190lbs..? and times by x passengers..?

what plane was this?
fptfootball07 2 years ago
American usually flies 767's and 777's between boston/nyc to london, and judging by the view from the cockpit, I'd say its a 767.

Hey Kent, Have you ever had any Aircraft Failures when flying?
And cool video! =)
GeneralofFlight 2 years ago
While flying a 727 for a cargo operator, we had an engine failure, cargo shift and brake problem. Fortunately not all on the same flight though.

Yes it does show your flight plan and waypoints, but only after you enter them into the FMC. You can see the waypoints on the heading indicator.
