  • you can tell this guy just fuckin rips rush on the bass.

  • if lyrics and bassline are on different beats it helps to write bassline and lyrics ower it, like this word is on that bass note, that wort is in that pause. and then practice very slowly

  • EEEE!

  • I'll try it, dude, thanks. This is something I've been struggling with. I fronted a band years ago and just picked up bass in the last year. So I thought 'singing and playing should be simple, right'? WRONG! Bass is so rhythym oriented and singing really isn't. Hopefully this helps.

  • Hi Joe. I like your videos. Easy to follow, plus your not a pretentious prick, and not being a pretentious prick is a very endearing quality in this age of pretentious prickism.

    Thanks and keep em' comin!

  • @Horsantti Yes in your language. Bitch

  • What strings are you using?

  • us people speak to much

  • a, b, c, d. EEEEEEEEEE

  • You're a cool guy.

  • U FUCKIN ROCK MAN CONGRATS

  • LOL! Man.

So, marking the tempo with the feet on a boombo, while playing scales and "sing" the note names must be soooo utile for practicing! HAHA

  • @Yamagatabr ....What the fuck is your problem?

  • That bass... man. That thing looks and sounds like heaven.

  • First time I've ever watched this series, and I'm currently lying in bed trying to sleep. =P

  • Great job man! I like your lessons.

  • I just wanted to say that i first found out about you today! and i can honestly say that i'm very happy to see that there is very useful and interesting material on bass playing! thank you so much! you just made a fan! :D and btw i subscribed! :)

    thank you!

  • Awww:) humour is good, enjoyed this tutorial muchly! Thanks for posting it!

  • Hey, great video,

My band is performing next week and our lead singer just dropped out. I got chosen to sing lead vocals and i don't have time to perfect the bass until it's second nature as i am now working no memorizing the lyrics etc. Were playing the song "Re-education through labor" by rise against, if you have any tips for me that would be really helpful, thanks.

  • Very Good Lesson thank you :)

  • lol your plucking and fingering, thats what she said XD

  • play the limelight

  • helps a lot! thnaks man

  • thx this help alot man :D

  • just click 1:05 to skip the chat

  • Sorry, sometimes I fall asleep on you........I have narcolepsy.

  • Thanks for sharing your techniques. If youtube and people like yourself had been around when I started playing I would have been so much better now!!

  • @TheBassDude1000 May be the way they practice? Everyone learns differently. Everyone retains information differently.

  • I've owned a bass for several years now and have finally gotten serious about learning it this year. I'm learning really fast and spending a little time each day playing. I just wanted to say that your videos have been extremely helpful and informative. I am not interested in just learning a few memorized songs, I really want to get to know my instrument and I have found your videos invaluable for this!

  • @aconitebloom Very kind of you to say! I'm here if you have any questions.

  • Awesome lesson Joe.I also do singing and bass playing at the same time. And I have to agree, practice always makes perfect.I might suggest practicing lyrics and bass lin

  • @ApocalypticWiz *bass lines separately .I practice them 100 times if needed. But I wanted to say, I find it almost impossible to do both singing and playing on lyrics that don't go on the bass line, like your C major scale, your singing goes on to the notes.Or sing during song breaks or easy bits (you know, the kind where the bass barely touches a note / bar.But I say, if you have lyrics during a bass solo, it gets scary.

  • @ApocalypticWiz I agree! I say the more familiar you are with a piece the better. As you gain confidence in playing and singing, the easier it gets. Even more difficult parts become somewhat easier. There is still concentration needed, but your brain will compute the information more efficiently. :)

  • The way ive done it is play the bassline till its 2nd nature and sing it till its 2nd nature. And listen to the recording till you know it by heart

  • @BrendoneanM Absolutely!

  • 5:07 um-C! Lol!

  • The easiest way to sing and play is to learn the bass line and the lyrics separately. Learn them so well that you can just sing the lyrics and play the bass line without even thinking about it. then try slowing the song down and playing the bass whilst singing. keep practising like this until you feel comfortable then speed the song up to its original tempo. this seems to work (for me at least).

  • @johnnyscouser Indeed!

  • Just practice, It's how I learned. Then it just comes natural at a certain point l to you when you start doing new stuff.

  • @frostseer That's what I do!

  • @CoolBear777 I love that to happen ^^

  • lol that E at the end was a little sketchy haha but your videos do help so greatly i just got a bass and i hav mastered all of the modes and most major and minor scales because of you now this is with several hours of practice but it is because i WANT do play and practice cuz you make it fun not because im forcing myself to do so so thank you GREATLY

  • @Longboardersrule12 I made that video around the time I was having serious problems with my voice. It has since gotten better.

  • im to bad at singing lol

  • I found Black Sabbaths ''Paranoid'' easy to sing and play. After you learn the song itself ofcourse.

  • i can play and sing most of cream's "sunshine of your love" except for the lines "be with you when the stars start falling" and "be with you till my seas are dried up" will this sort of practice help me get un-hung on those lines?

  • @zziggymaan I'm going to address this one for sure. Real soon!

  • i can sing and play most of cream's sunshine of your love, but i keep getting hung up on "be with you when the stars start falling" and "stay with you till my seas are dried up" will this kind of practice help me get unstuck?

  • 5:01 when he hits the e lol shit had me rolling for 5 minutes. very good technique tho.=]

  • Thank you very much! This is exactly what I was looking for.

  • try bob marley - i shot the sheriff very good for practicing sing and play

  • @crz4anime That is a very good one!

  • eEEeEeEeEE o_O lol, not like i can do better, good video though, i'll be checking out more

  • its much easier if the rythm is steady

  • hey coolbear777 great lesson thankyou very much :)

  • So I was looking to learn some quick scales, and came across your tapping video.. then got to this one, and now I'm subscribed.

Keep up the great work! It's very very helpful!

  • Hello, this is the first video of yours that I've seen. Thanks for it. I will be checking out your other ones. The vocalist in my band just quit and we don't know anyone so I'm going to try to take over vocals. I can sing and play guitar with little difficulty, but singing while playing bass is so much harder... and I'm a better bassist than I am a guitarist. But this has given me some ideas for practicing. Need to get a damn metronome.

  • On that note, I just subscribed. Every time I watch one of your 60second (6 minute =P) videos, I learn more than I ever did in all of the music lessons I ever took - combined. So I've really got to thank you man! (And I don't subscribe to many channels...)

  • thanks for this video. I'm a vocalist.....just learning to play bass. I'll keep practicing!!

  • i love your vids

  • Dang dude, you have very helpful videos, I am definitely subscribing.

  • This is one of the hardest things... Singing and playing at the same time - I'd say that you reduce your ability at both by approx. 50 per cent at first... It's darn difficult. As much as people hate it (because it is somehow generally thought of as a beginner's song), I find that "Stand by Me" is a good song for practising singing and bass playing at the same time.

  • That is an awesome song choice. The line weaves in and out from the downbeat against the main melody. You're absolutely correct. You can't give 100% of your brain to the bass line when singing. It gets split concentrating on one or the other. I find myself simplifying one or the other when having to do them at the same time. Another great line is Politician by Cream. Very syncopated. The vocal bobs in and out as well on this one.

  • another one for the list: Sly and the Family Stone's 'If you want me to stay'.

  • @CoolBear777 I think this is why Geddy Lee is such a god to so many bass players!

  • Subbed, I have found all of your videos useful. And your vocals in "virtuallyrush" were just brilliant.

  • Thank you. You're very kind. Someone on that page was not. Geddy's tough to pull off on a good day. Age and abuse has taken a toll on my voice. I'm not what I used to be. I'm growing to accept that. Geddy doesn't even sing the way he used to. I'm very glad you enjoy what I do. Take care.

  • Great man, also great bass it's an old ibanez right?

I would also say (even though I'm not sting) that practicing at a slow tempo (at first) the song you'd like to learn helps a lot...

When there's a difficult bit, I always slow down the metronome (or drum machine whatever) and and try to play it right ten times consecutively (regardless of how many times I did it wrong), then raise the tempo 5 bpm and so on... Also helps to have the idea of where you're going to take your breath during the song

  • My baby! I love the tone of that old thing! You are absolutely right! SLOW is the key to just about anything. Move forward when you feel comfortable. Right on! Later...

  • hahaha, dude, you awsome! thanks for the help! i watched like 6 of your videos in a row!

  • You're a sick puppy! LOL Thanks for watching.

  • If you can play it can you sing it though ;), thanks for the helpful videos Joe

  • thanks for uploading this man

  • Joe

I cant find you on myspace..I never use it so not familiar

dont you have a website ?

  • Will be up very soon, I hope. I'll keep you posted. Take care.

  • Thanks for the lesson, really helps alot. :]

I also tried sing triplets, it was hard. :S

  • Thank you! It is tough. Great training, though. Gets easier the more you do it. Take care.

  • great vid man...im playing war ensemble by slayer and singing for my band and it helped alot

  • hahaha me 2, and angel of death also

  • really?? thats cool man got a vid for it by any chance i wanna c

  • nahh mann not yet, we havent recorded it yet sorry

  • its cool bro just hit my page up if u do happen 2 record that track

  • how to play "fills" in songs...how to be creative??

I've been practicing all the things that you gave...but i don't know how to use it..i need it:)you're a great teacher:)

  • What type of bass is this

  • Ibanez Fender Jazz copy from 1975/76. One of my babies!

  • What would be good song to practice this first

  • Something you really enjoy. That might frustrate a bit, but when you get it it's so rewarding. Keep me updated on your progress.

  • Great lesson Thank you Joe (5Stars)

  • 2112 views at this moment!! Is this a coincidence?? HAHA

Nice work by the way. :)

  • That was pretty cool, huh?

  • Hey Joe... I just started watching your bass in 60 seconds videos and it is awesome.. Just got a quick questions.. I'm going to start playing the bass i just want to know the most basic practice i can do(i play the rythm guitar and im really having a hard time shifting from rythm to bass).. and also will you post a video of you actually singing? Great Videos!! Keep it cool

  • Thank you. If you really want to hear me sing (sort of) stop by the Virtually Rush channel. Take care.

  • best teacher on the net. i wish i could sing and play so bad. but i guess you need to be able to sing first. im a good bassist but a shit ass singer.

  • You're very kind. I sing and have been very fortunate that no one has asked me to quit! LOL

  • Thank~Joe

  • thanks soo much for the tips i am definately going to start practicing

  • Hey man, that's a very useful video! Actually also the only one I found on the net about this subject. I think 'come as you are' from Nirvana is a pretty nasty lick to sing on. I'm almost getting there but maybe with your handy tricks I will develop a super multitasking brain! All the best!

  • Thank you! That one is tough! The line moves back and forth so much. That's a good one to concentrate on for this type of thing.

  • I can't sing the full range of my instrument. I can only sing as low as G on the E string and as high as A# on the C string. I play 6 string bass. Should I sing in just one octave? That is hard for me to do because I'm so used to trying to match pitch. What about counting while you sing the pitch? I've seen guys do that as well. I am not comfortable in my range since my voice doesn't do what I'd like it to do.

    Thank you Joe.

  • sooo cute, you're kind of insecure about your singing are'nt ya:P?

  • Always have been.

  • man, your videos are so helpful with my music theory. i'm doing my 2nd last year of school and the music is getting very hard, and sometimes the teachers don't explain things properly. keep vthe videos coming man!

  • Will do! Keep me posted on how you're doing!

  • i play bass in my church and even though i dont (am?) a singer i still sing in the background without a mic.

it really helps to practice with doing 2 things at the same time

also may i ask... what bass do you play with?!.. i want a bass like that with that tone

  • Same here! I love doing that all the time! You can sing your heart out to God, but you there's no pressure on you because you have no mic.

  • Most of my basses are Ibanez. Love the tone! The one in the videos nowadays is one from 1975-76. Ash body, maple neck. I've always loved that bright tone wood combination.

  • Nice bass ;)

  • lol

    bass in 6 minutes !!!!

  • Six and a half! LOL

  • Bass in 390 seconds... haha anyway great instructional vids... right to the point and u explain it clearly

  • thanks!!!

  • Your vids are really helpful, thanx a lot for them, especially this one, I'm gonna practice my ass off on the numbers.

  • Thank you. I'm so glad I can help. Drop me a line again when you can.

  • hi...u said that ur a dummer or u know how to drums??can u do vidz like this too???from basic.. =)hope u can..

    thanks for ur vidz.

    God bless

  • Thanks again, man. Keep your eyes open or you'll run into things (I have). LOL Take care.

  • always a great help man. And I still love that Lawsuit Jazz bass of yours. ^^

  • thanks. i have to learn songs until i can play them with my eyes closed until i can barely sing with them lol! another good vid.

  • That bass is my BABY! It's been through a lot and still ROCKS! Thank you for your kind words. Later on...

  • thanks, this really helped. ive always had difficult doing them at the same time, and ill def use the counting method of practice to my advantage

  • I'm glad I'm a musician. I can't count higher than eight, really. LOL Thanks a bunch! Keep coming back!

  • 1st view! and comment!
