Yeah, screw'em if it was a guy. If it's "just a male" hostage then it's no big deal. But if the hostage is female then suddenly the whole "woman" thing comes alive and is an issue.
Why would it matter if the hostage is male or female? Do male hostages not deserve the same amount of protection and respect as that of a female?
