I remember watching this episode back in 71. My friends in school saw it too and we all loved it. I think I am turning into one of those old hippies now , only 6 years to go, HELP!
When I watched it back in 71 I saw that I would be 66 in 2017 and the thought of sitting in a senior center listening to old hippies playing psychedelic rock cracked me up. Is that my future?
Dear Ladster3, I remember this episode. Me and my parents watched this weire but very good episode. I remember that Glen Howard has an auto crash, and dreams that he wakes up in the future, where the cities of earth are underground due to the toxic air. As for Bonanza, I remember one where Little Joe falls off his horse in the desert and dreams that he has to rescue a town from an outlaw. After he wakes up he is found by Ben and Hoss. He finds a jewel in the sand that belonged to a girl.
@HepburnFlicks hm, never noticed her before apparently she plays a "board member", i'll have to look closely again. Probably one of the figures on the window of the hospital room. Maybe there were some extra scenes which never made the final cut?
this is wat is happening in 2017 guys type in 2017 msnbc, and they will even tell you wat the government has been planning for you all, SAY NO TO THE CHIP,
I liked to see how the future was portrayed in 60's and 70's tv...inspired me to pursue an IT career, now I wish I had gone to school to be a librarian....at the time computers seemed more exciting..
I remembered the episode vaguely but not that Spielberg had directed it. Usually when TV shows of the '60s & '70s speculated about the future they were way off the mark but this bit about old folks in the 21st century still living out their hippie fantasies was downright prescient.
Very true---but FILMFAX is a delightful exception. It focuses on s-f, horror, classic B movies, as well as the actors, directors and authors who made them. I highly recommend it.
This was absolutely one of the great TV memories I had of an otherwise dull TV genre. Little wonder, it was directed by a 24 yr old Spielberg. It seemed so weird and out of place for that show(old hippie bands, chapels with computers in the pews, techie guys talking rumors like "I heard they found a negro in Chicago"). I think a lot of boomer types fondly remember odd episodes like this one (kind of like the Bonanza Leprechaun and the Trek Tribble episodes).
Louise Latham was the greatest "I'm lonely for Glen.." She was amazing in the 1965 Alfred Hitchcock Hour episode "An Unlocked Window" for those TV buffs. I met her back in 1993 when I was selling watches in Century City, she was sitting alone at a food court table and told me about working on this episode

Holy sh%$ this looks awful...Compare it to Lucas' THX 1138 which came out the same year. Worlds apart.

The part about the 60 year old hippies is about right, except they're all tenured college professors now.

The strange synth music was also in the score to "Logan's Run"!! I wonder who wrote it?

It would be great if Universal would rerun the whole series on their HD cable channel but I guess that just wishful thinking.
