  • Never seen a hydraulic starter. before. Thank you.

  • WOW THAT FUCKING BASS OMG LOL hahahaha

  • So when you test an industrial turbine, what happens to the shaft power? Do you have 40,000 hp working against a brake, or do you remove the power turbine and just let the jet exhaust take the energy away?

  • @sharrynuk The power turbine is not part of the engine. We use a calibrated restricted outlet on the jetpipe to provide a load to the engine.

  • the Rolls Royce Olympus... THE ULTIMATE SUBWOOFER... and also the worlds most expensive one. XD

  • LOVE the pure sound of the engine itself on this one (without the start-cart stealing the audio "spotlight"). Hydraulic start is pretty cool!

Someday I hope to get some recording equipment out to a turbine facility and capture startups/shutdowns in 24bit with mics that can handle the insane decibel levels turbines make.

  • @djdood You're not that far away... and the S&S test cell is one of the few places on the planet that you could be granted access to make those recordings...

If you have the mics, we have the noise.

  • I remember the first Olympus test flying about 59 years ago. It them gave 10,000 lbs of thrust which to us schoolboys was awesome! Went on to power The vulcan, Concord, and the sadly forgotten TSR2. As always loved this video. Does the low ambient air temperature help reduce fuel consumption? Hope so. Thanks anyway really enjoy these.

  • @102trafalgar We don't measure fuel consumption, but the engine requires less rpm to make the same power at very cold air temp. I think it uses the same amount of fuel regardless of temp, though.

The colder denser air is easier for the compressor to work on.

  • @102trafalgar

Aah, the TSR-2... a beautiful bird so far ahead of its time it was misunderstood by the politicians and killed for meaningless reasons. The politicians are embarassed at their idiocy, so they don't really want to "revisit that issue"...

In Canada the exact same story happened with an aircraft of similarly outstanding capabilities. Ours was called the Avro CF-105 Arrow.

...I wonder what or who could have influenced our governments to kill such great aircraft ?

  • @AgentJayZ Thanks for your replies. Always intersting from one who knows! I also remember the sadly cancelled CF 105 Arrow. Powered I think by an Avro Orenda Iroquois? A truly beautiful engine! Keep the videos coming. In this sad world these a least put a smile on my aging face!

  • freakin ubber awesome ,every second

  • Great video Jay, I thought the multiple camera views during the startup sequence were especially interesting to watch. Too bad you couldn't loop around some of the heated exhaust for your comfort control, but I'm sure you are quite used to the cold temperatures by now.

  • @joelvh1 Ha! Yes very good... but the cold was no big deal on this day. It was on the last test though. Minus 17 it was on the thermometer, and that feels like the air is biting pieces off of you.

It made filming the video just before this one very difficult!

  • Excellent vid!! Sounds like the camer doesnt handle the sound of 40,000hp to well, but hell I dont blame it! The big turbine engines blow me away everytime (no pun intended)!! Truly mechanical pieces of art :)

  • Hooray for Olympus :DDD

  • That hydraulic starter setup is pretty awesome! The aircraft I operate has a hydraulic starter on the APU that is fed from a big accumulator.

  • Hey Jay,,,You guys need a new building,something with heat in it.lol

  • @koolbossjock

Oh, there's a lot of heat in it. One Olympus could heat the largest stadium in the world in about 5 minutes.

Unfortunately, it blowing straight out the door. And the draft created by the exhaust creates a wind right through the building - it's about 20mph.

It's, um.. interesting to be freezing while standing next to enough burning propane to heat nearly our entire town.

  • i really really love that resonance at the start ,even the camera felt it ..... and was grateful for the experience LOL!!!!!

  • Wow! that start up sounded just great.

  • @Wonkabar007 Sci Fi to start with then sounded like a early German pulse jet.

  • Is the super low bass due to the exhaust tube (if you can call it that) resonating with the, at that point, low intensity combustion process taking place? And so, when the engine revs up and the cimbustion intensity increases, it looses it's resonance and starts sounding like what you expect from a jet engine again?

  • @1metiz ... sounds good to me! I'm going to adopt your explanation as the official response.

  • Set many car alarms off with that? :)

  • @FrontSideBus ...All of them... but no worries: you can't hear them!

  • i always love the startup ound of an Olympus! love the camera angles too!

  • Hello Jay, thank you very much for uploading - maybe the most powerful subwoofer in the world :-D. But two questions: 1. I've seen a white blade at the LP Turbine while startup. Does this have a special purpose?

    2. Why did you stop the startup sequence several times and then power it up again (for example at 3:04)?

    Greetings from Germany and 5*!

  • @MPCapricorn Several blades in the HP and LP turbine were from different sources and may have different surface coloration. Does not affect the functioning of the engine.

    2. Well I may direct the editing, but I am only a cameraman here, and everybody just does their job. The tiny gaps in continuity are where things are edited out - for example someone walking in front of the camera. It's not a movie set; I do the best I can with whatever I manage to shoot.

  • @AgentJayZ Hello Jay, thank you for the explanation. And don't worry about the editing, your videos are all just great! I was just wondering about it.

    Greetings, Martin
