From "THE JACK BENNY PROGRAM" of January 29, 1965. Yes, this led into a nutty sketch where virtually everyone winds up in the "Tijuana Jail" (Jack's close friend Benny Rubin, whom he often featured on his radio and TV shows for over 20 years, playes the Mexican police chief).
Scuttlebutt around NAS NI told the tale of 3 guys off one of the squadrons stationed there in the '50's did go on leave to TJ n Ensenada, got snagged but escaped, but the MP's caught up to 'em in TJ-I'd guess the same scenario u described. It fits the area at the time, but there were places called 'gambling spots or spas' near the TJ racetrack/bullring at that time. There were some guys claiming to b the source of the song on one of these video sites few months back, (I thin
I've loved these guys since I was a kid. They'd play at NAS NI in Coranado, CA. I think it's Bob Shane but doesn't he resemble Stan Ridgeway? Check out Ridgeway's Camouflage video; their voices r similar also, which makes sense if there is a strong parallel in features. =^..^*=
I'll bet it was Hussongs Cantina (Ensenada, BC) that place was kickin back then. That was when you could actually walk from the boarder to the main drag "Revolucion" Hit every bar up one side and down the other and if you got hungry there was this little side street vendor under what looked like a stand made of cardboard and get a Tortuga sandwich.
@didgmanofdogwood - I always wondered if it might have been Hussong's - that was one wild place back in the day. I don't even know if it's still there - it's been more than 20 years since I've been to TJ. Not inclined to go now with all the often random-seeming drug violence.
@charliekucharski Definitely a classic TV skit. At the end of this video you can see two Mexicans sitting on the floor. I believe the one on the right is Mel Blanc. As the skit unfolds, Jack Benny comes to the Kingston Trio's rescue. Benny talks with the Mel Blanc character. Benny asks Blanc at least six questions. Every answer is "Si." Finally Benny asks what Blanc's name is. His answer: "Sy." Benny gives his classic pose of hands folded and wondering eyes. That's comedy, real laugh maker.
NO NO NO. Its not gambling in Ensenada....its Girl from Ipanema. Thats from Astrud Gilberto & Stan Getz 1964! HA, ha, ha. I can dig this 60s rap, its got a really good vibe and I'm hip to it. Its a really cool scene. Peace.
The Kingston Trio had a few songs in the top 40 in Vancouver Cda, it's difficult to say just which one was the biggest but I do believe Tom Dooley was the most memorable, as I heard ity most often as a flashback. I prefer Tijuana Jail over Tom anyday but it's still far from being one of my all time favorites. As a matter a fact I ranked and rated most songs that made the Top 40 playlist 'n '59 & this song was just inside the top 100 of that year. There was alot of shakin' going on 'n '59!.
Actually it was Ensenada not Tijuana. This song was written for some of my navy buddies fromUSS Lexington CVA 16... Our divison officer PM Moody, went down and bailed them out,,, 1959.
@MrAmerican40 Yes, you are correct about the Ensenada location. Suppose Tijuana sounded better.
My father and his buddy planned to gamble that very night in Ensenada. Fortunately, my mother came down to visit him and thus he did not go. He always says that my mom saved him from the "Tijuana Jail." My mother says that is why my father asked for her hand in marriage. Funny how things happen.
So this is the trio with JOhn Stewart in it? I think that Dave Guard was the best! It kills me that he had to leave the band. Oh man, he was soooo easy on the eyes, too. I wasn't even around when they were popular, (I'm 27) but every pic and vid I see of him is like, "WOW!" !!!!!
Hi TRK20 - [I'm CompVid101 logged in from my other channel, Sensei48] - that is indeed John Stewart on banjo, a worthy replacement though I am a bigger fan of the DG trio. This song was originally done by the DG trio - with Stewart here they speed it up and change it somewhat.
I believe it's a Jack Benny show from 1965. Benny had a very popular weekly variety show with comedians, acrobats, sketch comedy, and musical guests - kind of a junior grade Ed Sullivan Show, which was the absolute monarch of that genre in the 50s and 60s.
...one of the first songs we learned for our folk trio, The Voyagers....I think our whole set list eventually was Kingston Trio songs. Thanks guys, for so much enjoyment through the years...
oh yeah...!! TIJUANA ES MI CIUDAD...!!!

If you haven't seen this show with Nick, Bob, and John of the Kingston Trio with Mel Blanc and Jack Benny in this skit, you should. It's a classic.
