I knew nothing about the theories and before reading the explanation I thought that there was something I was missing because I could not see any change in the expression of the actor... sorry Kuleshov it doesn't seem to work
@Weimer63 It is the same shot of the person. The whole idea is to point out context which is what editing is mostly about. If you only saw the close-up of the person and the baby, for example, you would probably assume the adult is compassionate. If the experiment didn't work, movies wouldn't have worked but they clearly do in general. Cinema was born from some of Kuleshov's theories.
@applecineman the context is the entire movie, it's impossible to assume anything from one single scene. Even the music/sound alone can change completely the meaning.
@Weimer63 Yes, everything should work together. That includes lighting, costumes and set design as well as art direction, etc. But the general consensus was that the experiment did work at the time. Early filmmakers learned that they could build context into scenes and expand it to build a narrative. In other words, it evolved from there. Editing actually all started with Edison's assistant Edwin Porter. If you're interested in more, watch "The Cutting Edge: The Magic of Movie Editing".
@DeHerdtFutureMovies Bullshit. It doesn't exist. It's been lost for so long that there's doubt even as to whether the experiment was ever carried out.
