I doubt if anyone can write songs so full of passion like this.
today's "music" could never compare to the 1950's-1960's.most could relate to or lived the music. it had a story and or a meaning.50 + years later you can hear a song like this one and go back to a moment in your life. doubt todays generation will say the same. this song and most of gary's others put me back with a girl i've never forgotten or stopped loving.maybe that's why i'm on marriage #2 . the one that got away has never left my heart and i'm 60yrs old. miss you Barbara -ann
I remember going to prom in the early 70's with my darling Suzy, and Gary Puckett actually played--it's a long story. We danced together so closely that I can still smell the freshness of her hair. I left soon after graduation to play pro ball far away and we gradually grew apart. I'd see her a few times a year, but ultimately we each married others. Now, just days ago, a family sends me a copy of the hometown paper. In it was Suzy's obit--breast cancer at 57. Sweet dreams, Beautiful Lady.....
@The1066BMJ Hey, we are the exact same age; half a century young. Yes, I remember the fall of 1969 when this tune was a constant on the radio. I was in the third grade. I got the privilege of meeting Gary three times, in his concerts. I last saw him this past January / February.
Gary Puckett can't help but write songs about scoring underage tail. If it were modern times, his computer would have been confiscated by the FBI and he would have made a cameo on "To Catch A Predator". HAHA, Gary you pedo.
Every time I hear this song I end up thinking of myself and the things that occurred in my life, which basically changed me into the person I am today.
One of the greatest voices in the history of music. This man sung all his songs w/great clarity, heart and soul. Will go down as one the best of all time. Brilliant!

@saintrith Gary puckett is likely one of the best Singers that "EVER LIVED" I feel Sorry for Shallow people like YOU!! Empty Hollow and Clueless!! Remember Suicide is always for Hollow Humans like YOU!!!!!
woman, girl, wee sprog...'tis jilly's heart `n soul...never growin' old...inner child at high alert...her life& dreams were re-arranged...life is but a lovely road finding beauty along the way in all varietals...oh very yes...she's found out what it's all about..and learnin' to live and to give...peace..jillygirl~
This talent came and went like the wind, I was yesterday, we were just kids riding bikes playing baseball and sleeping out, steeling water mellons at the Krogers down the road.
This group is one of the best from any decade. Gary Puckett is one of the best vocalists ever. I have missed this quality music for decades. The only music needed was composed in the 60's and 70's. Listen to his voice!
This ballad will echo down the corridors of time as one of the prettiest,...especially the softer sections. They perfectly match Puckett's powerful but tender singing voice.
plaese don't diss jilly's stoke on this song...it is everything a wee lassie dreams of ...love. joy, sweetness, a man wantin' his love, forever, fiercley, gently. ...yes then...that's it..s bygone era???
When a girl becomes a woman, another human being joins the big party on earth, this song is about a young woman losing her virginity, its the most natural and beautiful thing ,a power unimaginable in its scale,a force untameable.
Ohhh my, one of the sexiest croons I've ever heard .....(remember gettin' goosebumps as a kid hearing this, still there, big time!:) That's some super-fine stoke wordsmithin' too! "Existing in a playground of stone...as tender as the gentle dawn...a teardrop that was sweet & warm, and on that sweet & velvet night."...Are ya kidding me!?...that's proper poetry in song at it's finest.!...Give to Live, lovelies..'tis the only way to fly!! Learnin' to live!...Aye, Gary aces this beauty! ~Jilly :D
Amen to that sister! (or brother, lol) @ phbppd...keeps us sane in an insane world, no doubt....music feeds the soul, and the heart.& the mind :)..."this girl is learnin', learnin'... to live, Aye! ~Peace, jilly
WOW! Gary Puckett & His Union Gap... "This Girl is a Woman Now...she's learned how to live...she's found out, what it's all about, and she's learnin' 'to live"...Yes, lovelies, now & forever...to live!!!l played at Molly Bloom' s, tonight... fergot the glory & heart of these lads, and my own self ..awesome..their other songs, "Young Girl" &" Woman, Woman", off the chain...weak at the knees, Jilly..;)
A Great Song! @typesetter, you are so correct. I was in Jr High in the late 60's when Gary Puckett was singing these great songs, and I can remember when Gals who were in their middle 20's and older were considered getting up there in terms of marriage prospects. Most of the Women in my family, including me were all married in our late teens. It was a different time, and in many ways a better time. At least if someone is going to use the word Pedophilia, at least know what it really means!
@truthseeker444 Then Stop Listening! Gary was and is Nothing You and the Freaks you Represent are trying to protray! these songs were done during a much different time! i Can Remember, when 25 was considered middle aged! so get a Life!
To typsetter: My mother had four children as well, the first at age 25 and the last at 38! ...in the mid-60s. Not too far off from your mom. I think her last was an unplanned surprise haha. I did the research and discovered that the average age of marriage for women in the US, during the 1940s, was about 21. It simply means that the majority were married at, or within a couple years on either side of 21... making 25 not terribly older than average.
Lament of the one left behind. It is a common affliction. People sing about being left; they write books about it, fiction and reality. It is one of the least understood and one of the commonest hurts one person can do to another. It doesn't even need to be a lament of one lover being left by another. It is one of the driving forces of personalities,
@wmbrown6 Yeah, definably. The two go together well when you'll listen to them one after another two. Two unique voices, two unique songs, and a lot of depth. Go Gary Puckett, Go Neil Diamond!
oh my,this takes me way back, back when I was young, and we only had A.M. radio.Long summers spent layin out in the sun, with our radios hangin out the windows!!!Oh,to be back there!
If anyone has Gary Pucketts' ear, please tell him his backup band is excellent, but he is being too kind to them. People come from distances to see him and they want to hear HIM sing, not so much them play. And he can still sing it, maybe not to his standards, but better than most top40 singers today.
Gary, and a Band calling its self the Union Gap. still do small concerts, like summerfests, and fairs! his Voice has suffered some, but when he wants to, the "Magic" is still there!
I believe this tune came out in 68. My dad had a 66 pontiac Grand Prix.....big vehicle for it's time......dad never let me take it out on a date...had a rambler, ambassador, at 16 years old the bio-rhythems were go'in.
Typestter: Yes, I believe it was a 1966, had a rebuilt 327 engine in it and boy, what a "gas hogger" I had to make sure I had enough money to fill the tank up, even back than gas was what....50 cents a gallon or so. My dates had to go "coach class" when Dad let me take the Rambler out for a Friday night date. the front seats went back all the way, perfect for do'in a little smooching while parked at the overlook in Mounds Park, St. Paul, Minnesota overlooking the great Mississippi River
this song remindied of my present girl because she was a innocent girl some yrs younger not jailbait lol. till she went and gave herself to another now shes back as i learn to trust her again. but the song always makes me think of her before her mistake.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I remember I got my first blow job in my '76 Chevy Impala at the drive in movies when this song was playing. Let me tell you this, I came like a bucket full of silver dollars, not once, butt twice! I couldn't kiss Donna during the movie or when I took her home butt I put it to her in the back seat during the intermission. She was a screamer. I lost track of her butt saw her at our class reunion in '03. We never had the heart to speak with each other, but I popped a boner for her a few times!!!
This Girl was a single in the Spring of '69 and it got smothered off the charts by a lot of bubble gum music which came out like the Archies. Still this song has matured and is still a Union Gap classic.
Sorry, your wrong. Gary's unmistakable signature style of singing garnered him six consecutive gold records & 8 top ten on the Billboard Chart. "This Girl Is A Woman Now" was one of those top 10 hits. In addtion: In the year (1968) Gary Puckett & The Union Gap had six consecutive gold records & sold more records (at that time)than any other recording act. This included the legendary band "The Beatles!"
I wish that they would still make music as they did from the 60s and before. I was never a Beatles fan, but more of a John Lennon solo performer. I wish that I was born a lot earlier so that I could enjoy these great songs.
wow, I'm 6 years older than you, came out in the late 60's. you were alittle too young when it came out, probably 10/11 years old which is why you probably don't remember this great tune
Gary had such a pure voice ! Better management of his career in the early 70's would have given us so many more unforgettable hit songs. Never get tired of this song...
hi!, i've seen that you are interested in the Gary Puckett songs, like 'the girl is a woman now', ¿do you like to hear this song in spanish version? it's beautiful too. I will thank your opinion.
i know. not many people realize that this is a song a bout a girl who takes the ultimate step=== losing her virginity, and how it can literaly change your life over night
god help the woman who doesnt ALLOW music in her house her GIRLS WILL BE PREGNANT BY THE AGE OF 15 MY CHILDREN 4 OF THEM CANT REMEMBER WATCHING TV ...NOT THAT THEY WERE stopped bit as my eldest daughter is 40 next week and she says that even as a young child she remembers music being played and my other 3 children are all very musical so WATCHOUT IT WILL END IN TEARS N THEY WILL BE YOURS NOT THERES

This talent came and went like the wind, I was yesterday, we were just kids riding bikes playing baseball and sleeping out, steeling water mellons at the Krogers down the road.
Time realy flys.

This group is one of the best from any decade. Gary Puckett is one of the best vocalists ever. I have missed this quality music for decades. The only music needed was composed in the 60's and 70's. Listen to his voice!

this is the perfect song about what a lifechanging experience the loss of ones virginity can be
MariposaGirl1981 1 year ago
This ballad will echo down the corridors of time as one of the prettiest,...especially the softer sections. They perfectly match Puckett's powerful but tender singing voice.

~Jilly :D

I agree with your sentiment about this song...but I don't think 25 has been considered middle aged since the 19th century. You can't be that old lol.

If anyone has Gary Pucketts' ear, please tell him his backup band is excellent, but he is being too kind to them. People come from distances to see him and they want to hear HIM sing, not so much them play. And he can still sing it, maybe not to his standards, but better than most top40 singers today.

Still this song has matured and is still a Union Gap classic.
accordionreid 3 years ago 3
Sorry, your wrong. Gary's unmistakable signature style of singing garnered him six consecutive gold records & 8 top ten on the Billboard Chart. "This Girl Is A Woman Now" was one of those top 10 hits. In addtion: In the year (1968) Gary Puckett & The Union Gap had six consecutive gold records & sold more records (at that time)than any other recording act. This included the legendary band "The Beatles!"
jwill121459 3 years ago 3
I wish that they would still make music as they did from the 60s and before. I was never a Beatles fan, but more of a John Lennon solo performer. I wish that I was born a lot earlier so that I could enjoy these great songs.
