They are similar on a single point: how those voice boxes sound like drive thru speakers.

It could so easily be a coincidence that both comics had the same realisation as, like all jokes, they have to be about an obvious thing. What, so now only one comic can joke about how men and women are different? The first one who did that subject?
Bill Hicks had great, heavy influences, a squeegee third eye, clear nautilus ear chambers and a mind of his own.
whether topical schmopical or life's age old questions Hicks composed his own comment, soliloquy or aria. J.Lennon ,Shakespeare(Hamlet) Mrs. Hick's little boy---just searching for some truth through music, poetry, a laugh.
The material was topical at the time..what don't people get about that? You could probably find 20 guys through the US who had never even meet doing similar bits... people talk about Hicks "insight" ...yeah like no one less was talking about Iraq war and the non smoking push and shitty music and drugs misinterpretation...EVERYONE was talking about these things..and before anyone starts I'm a huge Hicks fan..I just people should get some perspective on the times
Uhh, why don't you just Google when the acts happened? I can guarantee with a little bit of leg work on the ole' computer you could probably figure out which one was performed first. Just saying'. And no I'm not going to do it for you, you're the one with a channel about comedy on YouTube.
@jjtheslayer69 for your information, it was common to buy trade bits from other comedians, but have the common decency to ask, its the same as preforming a song you wrote, if at ANY point you couldn't imagine yourself doing it anymore, or find yourself unable to come up with your own material without stealing subject matter QUIT.
@jjtheslayer69 and its okay to steal a little bit? If you do your research Denis Learly has multiple accusations. Making the majority of your act based on subjects and persona from someone else's creativity and you clearly DO NOT have permission?! your mentality must completely fake.

Get a clue. The entire entertainment industry uses and builds on the work of their predecessors it is only people OUTSIDE the industry who have never made anything in their life, who assume it "All has to come completely from scratch".
then maybe you should have read what I said about this video ""Now this time in seems they just used the same premise which might just be coincidence"".
as for your question, Easy answer... They said it was.
Denis Leary never gave Bill hicks credit for his jokes, Denis Leary never gave tribute to Bill Hicks. If you actually watch Bill hicks material and Then Denis Leary, you will see Leary stole jokes and even copied the persona to an extent.
Denis Leary.. the dickheads a walking joke, Literally.. it's obvious he watches real comedy acts makes notes of the ENTIRE act (watch Bill hicks Vs Douche, I mean.. Leary..) and he just puts his own comical 'Jenius' into it. If you watch the Video Bill Vs Le cunt, you'll see what I mean.
But it's almost like his own crowd thinks he isn't funny. I would like to see him have a go at a heckler.. He'd probably steal some other comedians come backs too, the piece of shit.

Given the 2 clips shown, Denis Leary took it farther, did more with it. I'm confused on this video... Is this guy seriously questioning whether Leary stole jokes or is it just a joke vid? I see this as one of those things where the answer is so obvious that you have to wonder if it has a hidden motive.
Judd stole from both, Hicks did it first, I saw it in 1986, i saw Leary do it in 88 and Apatow was last. Hicks is the original, Leary borrowed and was funny and Apatow did nothing with the bit and borders on hack. End of Story.
This is why Leary got into acting, because he's not a legitimate comic; he's not original.
As someone who loves a great comic (and I thought Hicks not only a genius, but a benchmark), Leary is not a great comic. To be blunt, he's not even funny. Not when you know he's ripping off other, better, more profound and original comics like Hicks. He's not in his league or that of other great comics like Carlin, Kinison, Hedberg, Pryor et. al.
Dennis Leary took all the mainstream parts of Bill Hicks' act and repackaged them into something that was easier to sell. Having sharp elbows is more important than talent or intelligence. On a side note you sound like James Woods..
Denis Leary has proven himself to be a thief, like Mr. Menstealia (who isn't even Mexican by the way, he's HONDURAN, but tells jokes about Mexicans and acts like he is part of the culture), and absolutely unoriginal at the craft. Everybody knows he stole his routine from a true comedic legend, Bill Hicks. Bill Hicks knew it, and other comedians knew it. This is just another example of Leary's unoriginality and lack of skills in the craft of comedy. Fuck Denis Leary.
Also, these guys have no style, no sense of rhythm. Its just so hacky sounding when they "perform" their "bits".
Bill Hicks, not only told the jokes, but he paced them, like Carlin. The pauses, the drawn out notes, the sudden staccato, the quiet moments. An orchestrated comedy with a slice of life in it.
This is why these guys will never be remembered, and I think that kills them inside alone, knowing that. People respect and admire Hicks, and will do for many years. Leary, Apatow, no.
It's not just a joke on the same topic or a similar joke on the same topic, it's an IDENTICAL joke. Plus Leary has a track record of theft, so yeah. It's joke stealing.
"is the maker of this video a douche............. or a turd sandwich? or maybe he is both ....at the same time...but seperatly. Is it just me....or is the way this guy talks...a bit.........annoying?.........
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Denis Leary takes a couple pointers from Bill Hicks, but he doesn't flat-out steal material. He does it better than Hicks did (rest his soul). Fanboys can whine and cry, but Denis Leary just does it better.
On the bright side, they're both funnier than Apatow.
@funincluded Uhhhh...this isn't a matter of lifting some vague concept. They use the EXACT SAME FUCKING WORDS. And since Leary's notorious for stealing from other comics (most notably Bill Hicks), I'm gonna have to say this was probably Apatow's joke and Leary jacked it.
If a comedian 'borrows' a bit from another, well that beats trying to be original, right? And surely some of them do it because they don't think there'll be any audience crossover. It probably happens more often than we think, or nitpickers can be bothered to point out.
You people are ridiculous, just because Leary does a joke about the same subject matter you think he is stealing the joke. Comedians steal jokes and bits off each other all the time, it has been going on since the days of Richard Pryor. I guess if I go and tell a joke about Kool Aid then I am stealing it off of Dane Cook somehow. Get over yourselves people.
How did they think of the same joke at the same time?
Two hacky theifs heard the same bit from hicks, and thought it was open ended enough to attempt to redo to their shifty act. But they both fucked up and did the same joke and cemented their place in the Hack hall of failure.
Leary took the voicebox joke from Bill Hicks. I think bill said on 'sane man' that he fears he is going to be up on stage in 20 years with a voicebox because of all his smokin. Sane man was recorded in 1989. Denis leary knew back then that hicks wasn't popular so he thought no one would notice that he stole all his jokes from Bill. I'm glad Leary was caught out, he didn't deserve credit for anything he did, whereas Hicks was a genius!
I think theres some plagiarizing at work but to be honest i can see how 2 stand ups could have coincidentally told this same joke. I mean think about it, if someones gonan make a joke about voice boxes, their automatically gonna think "mc donalds drive through", i know i would
Doesnt take a genius to realize that those voice boxes sound funny. Also, McDonalds is a common thing to think of when trying to decide where to take the joke.
maybe i'll take this video and re-upload as my own video and take credit for thinking of it. Would it be stealing ideas or parallel thinking (huurrr derp derp)? Parallel thinking, are you kidding me? they used almost the exact same words and actions when delivering the punchline. The only thing slightly different is the set up, but it's still the same joke. Just because you can take a joke and tell it in your own way doesn't mean you thought of it.
did bill hicks do the voice box thing before both of these guys in this clip?..if so,then maybe both these guys ripped off hicks stuff................?
It's been widely accepted that Leary stole a lot of material from Bill Hicks, so if anyone of these two is guilty of stealing the joke... go to the guy with a history of doing it.
This routine was ripped off of Bill Hicks. Leary is a pathetic loser, as for the other guy, I've never even heard of him. I'm sure with very good reason.
Oh, well regardless, these guys both ripped off Bill Hicks. Maybe not so much Apatow, but this guy DID NOT rip off Dennis Leary or vice versa. Leary is the biggest hack in comedy. This whole routine of Leary's was ripped off of the great Bill Hicks. I haven't seen Apatow's full routine, but Leary's entire routine was practically ripped off Hicks.
I didnt even have to watch this to know you're a bogus apologist for the media. Stealing bits is stealing. Watch who gets famous and rich, the thieves. Watch who gets marginalized and never get that big media break, the originals who CANNOT BE CONTROLLED OR FED THE MAINSTREAM LINE. Leary is a thief and you are working for the jews in hollywood in some way. You are full of shit.
Robin Williams was an established comedian with his own style and brand of comedy DECADES before Leary became popular by piggybacking the bits of Bill Hicks. That is a horrible comparison, and you're an idiot for defending this jackoff in the first place.
As Chris Rock has said before in an old interview every comedian steals jokes. That's the way it is. The only thing is, who does the joke best. If you can deliver it better and funnier than the other guy then it becomes your joke.
It seems that the comics that are accused of stealing material, most notably Dennis Leary and Carlos Mencia, like to change their delivery style to the point of yelling and screaming. They're just not funny.
I dislike both of these people, but Leary the most for stealing from Bill Hicks. Fuck Leary and fuck his "smoker persona". Hicks was doing it before him, and did it way better.
You can steal jokes if you pose & prance while smoking a cig immediately after delivery. At that point, so much new life is injected into the joke that it can hardly be called "stolen." To Dennis Leary, comedic masterworker.
no, no that wasn't stealing if you want to see open and closed verbatim steeling search Carlos Mencia. that guy must be paying royalties to like a dozen comedian's
So now just because both comics reference voice boxes, its joke stealing? This is not joke stealing, the only thing similar is the topic, Judds was about voices boxes, but denis' was adding humor to his credo that he will never stop smoking, you have to listen to both bits IN THEIR ENTIRETY then make your decision.
It is parallel thinking. Around that time period there was a movie out called Dead Again. It featured Andy Garcia with such a device and was mimicked relentlessly in comedy clubs at the time.

"A dwarf standing on the shoulders of a giant may see farther than a giant himself." ~Didacus Stella
I do believe comedy is art, as valid and as vital as music, painting, and architecture. Or whichever other capital "A" art you'd like to add... and so, whether the invention of radio is in dispute, or who made whichever fartjoke first...
Whatever benefits (or denigrates) humankind ought be enjoyed for what it is: A Temporary Diversion.
Don't forget: No one is immortal... we all get to die.
At one point, Apatow realized that his success as a comedic performer was going no where(he couldn't find his "style"), so he decided to lay-low and just write for already established comics. It's possible that he let Leary use this joke, very possible. Either way, it's a good joke.
I'm not completely sold on Leary stealing jokes, and I've heard all of his and Hicks' material. If he does, then clearly he only does it just enough to the point of leaving doubt. Nevertheless, he's kind of annoying in No Cure For Cancer, whereas Bill Hicks was always funny. The rest of Leary's repertoire was never that strong (except for Asshole), and he never really stole the best material either. He's an odd case.
Sure it is coincidental that the jokes are similar, but Leary is far better and has been around longer than Apatow. Even still, people accuse Carlos Mencia of stealing jokes, but even if he does, he performs them better. The premise is funny, and the superior comic did it better. So really, who cares as long as you are laughing at the punch line?!? So go *&%# yourself!
@jdogbig1 That's idiotic. Carlos Mencia is only funny (well, not really) when he's doing other peoples' material; his essence is nothing but "annoying television personality" not unlike Ryan Seacrest or Ellen DeGeneres. If that constitutes being a "superior comedian", then eat an ass you shitdick.
@faggotpuncher2 Continue fisting yourself fuckwad, I wasn't posting a comment here to attack anyone prior to your reply to mine. So eat a grenade and die numbnuts.
@jdogbig1 Just admit you were being patronizing and condescending by insinuating that anybody who thinks joke thieves or Carlos Mencia aren't funny are whiners and should vehemently fuck themselves. Then, I'll apologise for attacking you, but nobody can deny that thinking because Leary's been around for over twenty years and Carlos has some "charisma" about him that stealing material is justified is idiotic and doltish.
sure the voice box was the same idea but the punch line is completely different.
I mean people do jokes about the same idea all the time. Mexican jokes, asians joke. white jokes etc. Comic uses those ideas but the joke would be some what different. I mean how many comic has already use bad asian drives or they good at math or black people like chickens I mean there so many new ideas but also from those ideas there can be so many ways to deliver the joke . So i wouldnt say this is joke stealing.
Here's a newsflash - Every comedian steals jokes.. just like musicians steal lyrics, and melodies, get over it...

This is just another example of Leary's unoriginality and lack of skills in the craft of comedy. Fuck Denis Leary.
reverendd 7 months ago
Also, these guys have no style, no sense of rhythm. Its just so hacky sounding when they "perform" their "bits".
Bill Hicks, not only told the jokes, but he paced them, like Carlin. The pauses, the drawn out notes, the sudden staccato, the quiet moments. An orchestrated comedy with a slice of life in it.
This is why these guys will never be remembered, and I think that kills them inside alone, knowing that. People respect and admire Hicks, and will do for many years. Leary, Apatow, no.
dano555666 7 months ago 2
@reverendd Plus he constantly says "we" when referring to Mexicans and talks about how Mexico as a shithole as if he's ever fucking been there.
Never have myself but I hear it's pretty nice actually.

Denis Leary takes a couple pointers from Bill Hicks, but he doesn't flat-out steal material. He does it better than Hicks did (rest his soul). Fanboys can whine and cry, but Denis Leary just does it better.
On the bright side, they're both funnier than Apatow.

Search youtube and you'll see an earlier performance from Leary which predates both of these, which includes the voicebox bit.
erfer666 9 months ago

Ok. Both in 1992; consider that the moment these performances were jokes are not stamps of when the jokes were written.
Who knows how long each comedian could have been working that joke/idea in clubs. This is the problem w/ a lot of "Youtube Evidence."

I'm glad Leary was caught out, he didn't deserve credit for anything he did, whereas Hicks was a genius!

maybe i'll take this video and re-upload as my own video and take credit for thinking of it.

1. Two people in the same profession leading similiar lives may react to the same stimulus in similiar ways.
2. One person may watch anothers routine, find it funny and regurgitate it later on without realising where the inspiration came from.
3. One person may steal anothers joke.
Referencing an inspiration comes across completely differently from copying them verbatim, this is not a tip of the hat to bill hicks or judd apatow.

This whole routine of Leary's was ripped off of the great Bill Hicks. I haven't seen Apatow's full routine, but Leary's entire routine was practically ripped off Hicks.

I dislike both of these people, but Leary the most for stealing from Bill Hicks. Fuck Leary and fuck his "smoker persona". Hicks was doing it before him, and did it way better.
imrickjamesbeeoch 1 year ago
You can steal jokes if you pose & prance while smoking a cig immediately after delivery. At that point, so much new life is injected into the joke that it can hardly be called "stolen." To Dennis Leary, comedic masterworker.

stoopefy 1 year ago
So now just because both comics reference voice boxes, its joke stealing? This is not joke stealing, the only thing similar is the topic, Judds was about voices boxes, but denis' was adding humor to his credo that he will never stop smoking, you have to listen to both bits IN THEIR ENTIRETY then make your decision.

apatow was hilarious, wish he'd kept it up. his movie and tv commentaries are kickass to listen to.
rongravy 1 year ago
Consider this thought:
At one point, Apatow realized that his success as a comedic performer was going no where(he couldn't find his "style"), so he decided to lay-low and just write for already established comics. It's possible that he let Leary use this joke, very possible. Either way, it's a good joke.
gzagsjm25 1 year ago
I'm not completely sold on Leary stealing jokes, and I've heard all of his and Hicks' material. If he does, then clearly he only does it just enough to the point of leaving doubt. Nevertheless, he's kind of annoying in No Cure For Cancer, whereas Bill Hicks was always funny. The rest of Leary's repertoire was never that strong (except for Asshole), and he never really stole the best material either. He's an odd case.
faggotpuncher2 1 year ago 2
Sure it is coincidental that the jokes are similar, but Leary is far better and has been around longer than Apatow. Even still, people accuse Carlos Mencia of stealing jokes, but even if he does, he performs them better. The premise is funny, and the superior comic did it better. So really, who cares as long as you are laughing at the punch line?!? So go *&%# yourself!
jdogbig1 1 year ago
@jdogbig1 That's idiotic. Carlos Mencia is only funny (well, not really) when he's doing other peoples' material; his essence is nothing but "annoying television personality" not unlike Ryan Seacrest or Ellen DeGeneres. If that constitutes being a "superior comedian", then eat an ass you shitdick.
faggotpuncher2 1 year ago
@faggotpuncher2 Continue fisting yourself fuckwad, I wasn't posting a comment here to attack anyone prior to your reply to mine. So eat a grenade and die numbnuts.
jdogbig1 1 year ago
@jdogbig1 Just admit you were being patronizing and condescending by insinuating that anybody who thinks joke thieves or Carlos Mencia aren't funny are whiners and should vehemently fuck themselves. Then, I'll apologise for attacking you, but nobody can deny that thinking because Leary's been around for over twenty years and Carlos has some "charisma" about him that stealing material is justified is idiotic and doltish.
faggotpuncher2 1 year ago
sure the voice box was the same idea but the punch line is completely different.
