I live on the westcoast of british columbia and just finished building and staining a new deck with Sikkens. One interesting thing I learned from the cedar suppliers was that they all said - "Never ever sand cedar!!!! It will ruin it's ability to properly accept stain and over time, your stain will fail and not protect the cedar as the stain manufacturer may have intended". Perhaps this is the cause to your problems??
I signed up for your newsletter. Thanks for that service! Also I read your disclosure policy and knowing how you deal with vendors makes me feel better about your recommendations. Your the best I've found online for information that I feel like I can trust.
Hi, I've been waiting for the results on this test before doing my new deck. I read on here that a new video was coming in two days, a month ago, but I have not seen a new video or article about it.
Please let us know what does and doesn't work. I'm hoping that endorsements are not playing a part in this.
@0400lumper I taped the followup video. It will be posted soon. I talked about the results and identified the products in a newsletter at my website about a month ago. You do subscribe to the AsktheBuilder newsletter, don't you????? If not, you now can see why you should. :->
Thanks Tim. I hadf my wood all prepared and the product had arrived with the tab broken so I can not return it.. I have new cedar and the it looks fabooolus. So I guess I am running another, very expensive test in Minnesota.
I spoke with SS and they are indeed the manufacturer and have looked at your video. Their person recommended following the can instruction of one coat on horizontal cedar, and testing the penetration to see if a second coat penetrates within the 20 minutes, BUT if the cedar is not penetrated rapidly then do not apply a second coat.
@oramato My cedar was so abused by the sun, it readily took two coats. In fact, within 5 minutes, the first coat was flat as can be and had soaked in. I then applied the light second coat and have no issues. A follow up video will be taped on June 30th. That's 60 days after it was applied.
Tim, I am almost certain I know which "Nono" you are using (goes on white). I just received a shipment of the "crystal clear" MY can reads: HORIZONTAL SURFACES: On horizontal cedar, mahogany, and other dense woods, apply only one coat of finish. .. . I think you applied two coats, so you have overcaoted by a factor of 1/3 of 13 trillion particles per inch. Am I right?
@oramato We must have a different product. On my can it says two light coats followed within 20 minutes. What's more, I talked with the head chemist of the company before I applied it.
Great video. I can't wait to see how the stains do. I need to stain my deck this summer. It's wonderful seeing you back on YT! It's absolutely beautiful where you are. I'm ready to move! :-) Have a happy and safe Memorial Day Weekend!
@usafireandrescue Thanks! I'm taping a follow-up video tomorrow as it's now been exactly a month. Wait until you see that one! Your recipes are getting better all the time. Congrats on that! When are you coming up to visit?
@7seveng7 Yes, I've been on a video hiatus. Still waiting for the ad dollars to jump up to a respectable level to justify the time spent. Also, not too much opportunity to tape projects as the house at the top of the hill from this dock in NH is nearly brand new. I do have a small project it looks like I'll be doing at the end of the summer that could produce about 20 or 30 new videos. Hope all is well with you in ID.
@AsktheBuilder: I'll be looking forward to those videos. I'm doing well, getting married this summer. "Love Bites" by Def Leppard is still one of my favorite songs. Stay in touch and take care = )
Good test. If the original product was by Behr - I have had experience with their sealer and their stains......they dont always perform well but at least Behr stands behind them & tries to make it right when there are issues. The second "clear" sealer you used reminds me of a cataract on an eye.....the third "clear" sealer was the nicest looking - to my eye. Good luck with the long term results. All the best
