My Dad had one of these - a beautiful 1973 metallic blue 1600 fastback. I remember that it did have some rust problems later in life, and was always getting welded back together. Finally the heat exchangers went out, probably when it was about 13 years old. An enthusiast bought it around 1987. Still, fantastic memories and that instantly recognisable engine sound.
Beautiful car, never seen or even heard of them before viewing this.
All I could think about was how awesome it would be to replace the engine with something superfast... But that would obviously spoil such a prestine car!!
Thanks. Rust killed a lot of these cars in the past and they were never that popular so there arent a great many left.
I had a squareback (estate) version of this car a few years back and I managed to fit a 2 litre type 4 engine which was very similar to that fitted in a Porsche 914.
That was about as big an engine to fit under the hatch but I have seen Subaru engines and Porsche 911 engines fitted to these with the boot floor raised.
and i thought top gear was british...
