I think they have difference but only for new buyers not for existing 3rd gen or 4th gen users.

5th gen comes default with iOS 5 but 4th gen comes with iOS 4.1.

this is not a new gen. iPod touch, apple released the white iPod touch 4g, AND THAT'S ALL

there is no performance difference whatsoever, it's the same iPod, just different color, oh, and the iPod touch 4g white comes with iOS5 out of box, and you don't have to sync to iTunes to enable it

I'm pretty sure the reason they didn't give it an A5/make a 5th gen is the size and heat of the A5 chip. It wouldn't fit into the iPod Touch body and with the metal back being iPod sized rather than iPad heat would be a huge problem (my 4S burns me whenever I play games like infinity blade). Sometimes having thin electronics causes problems down the road :(
