  • This tune is a good example of the great music we've sadly departed from in exchange for so much of the homogenized, pre-conceived, soulless, corporate format that people have been convinced to accept as artistry. Very sad indeed.

  • that is one badass drummer, too.

  • saw Savoy Brown at the Fillmore West as well, and several more times, ending with the Street Corner Talking lineup - which only had Kim from the original band. Still a fine group., Someone mentioned Led Zeppelin. Imho, you dont put Savoy Brown in their category. SB and Ten Years After and Peter Green's FM were Great bands, but they were all about the music..like Cream was. Zep was about the music and The Live Show.. as were the Who and Hendrix..and Jethro Tull were. way bigger than life, live.

  • Oddly enough Im 21 years old, I used to listen to this album religiously, when I was like 16, 17. I just remembered them today. I don't know how I forgot them.

  • awesome band...Kim Simmons can shred with the best of them!!!

  • I am almost 60 and I still love Savoy Brown. I saw them with Fleetwood Mac at a bar in NY not even on a stage, right on floor level and I was within several yards from the musicians. It was one one the best performances I ever saw.

  • this is a really great record.

  • Raw Sienna used to have a different meaning....think of the color brown and another song on this album...Needle and Spoon.

  • Sorry blue, but this song is #2 off side 2, "Stay While the Night is Young." A great tune, but not "That Same Feeling" of side 1, another great track.

    Regards

  • I love this album. I listened to this after partying all night. Put me in a mellow state of mind. I'm thinking of going to see them at the Rhythm Room.

  • oh you Zen Awesome !

  • I use to have this on 8 track. I still have it on vinyl, great album.

  • Chris Youlden in da house

  • 40 years later, successful, prosperous, healthy , and happy, i can still say my 1st. trip on lsd, with savoy brown guiding me, was the single coolist thing i've ever done. thanks for the memories.

  • Wow, mysteryseeker did well this time... this is awesome!!!

  • I saw Savoy Brown in Chicago in 1968 at a place called the Kinetic Playgrounds (aka the Electric Theatre). They were part of a four band bill. Opening was Florida group the Litter. Savoy Brown was third on the bill. Followed by Jethro Tull. Heading the bill was Led Zeppelin. It was a show I'll never forget. Each succeeding group blew the preceding away. Show started at 8 PM, ended around 2 AM. No seats: you stood or sat on the floor. Total cost to get in: $5. Now those were the good old days!

  • @JohnP61254 - I'm glad you said that LZ blew the others out of the water, but I bet that SB & JT were a very close 2nd and 3rd. Matter of fact they probably could learn from each others styles....LOL

  • It's Halloween season. Time to break out this song.

  • This is no doubt a blues album unmatched with singer Chris Youlden who sounds like a Blackman but even better than that, can whale like a Whiteman. I was around at the time when this album came out, Raw Sienna. I listened to the whole album and never ever got tired of hearing every song. I love these in particular: When I Was A Young Boy, I’m Tired, Needle n Spoon. Still listen to it endlessly. The words or so sobering

  • @ last person. I saw these guys for like a buck in a fucking warehouse in San Jose... perfect. Was way into blues, they were to.

  • my daddy had this album when i was a kid and i just remember thinking about the word sienna and that it was a color. little did i know about the music....till now. wonderful tunes!

  • What a great album!!!

  • i still own the savoy records and remember playing along on my ibanez, harmonies more difficult than mayall then - good times!!

  • i still own the savoy records and remember playing along on my ibanez, harmonies more difficult than mayall then - good times!!

  • Chris Youlden...the voice of Savoy Brown at their peak. Hate that he ever quit. Thanx for posting a great song.

  • Saw these guys in Berkeley back in the day. They were so awesome. Lonesome Dave had left for Foghat already, but Kim Simmonds could still bring it on. Love this band. Kim Simmonds had an album out new like 3 or 4 years ago.

  • Does Cris Youlden still sing? At all? Anywhere?

  • @56BUICKRiviera That, my friend, is a truly deep theological question...

  • @sparkyization I guess he plays in england only.

  • Another thought, one year later: Rhythmically, this could be dismissed as just a slow (intelligently written) blues shuffle... but listen to what the drummer is doing!

    Brilliant!

  • @tuxguys

,,The drumming...? I'll go for that.. 1st listened to this at school in '70-'71 and never really noticed that till you mentioned it.. Nice one..!

  • like the jazzy melodies

  • Genius...disguised as a scruffy bunch of wankers!

  • So is this pre Foghat or is Foghat post Savoy Brown? Just a thought, dont shoot the messenger! :o)

  • @genxxxersize Foghat is post-Savoy Brown. But Youlden had left SB before the Foghat split.

  • A fine cut from an amazing album. Savoy Brown was one of the finest British blues bands ever.

  • if you like Savoy Brown, may I Suggest Ainsley Dunbar, Blodwyn Pig, Harvey Mandell, early Fleetwood Mac, and, of course, John Mayal

  • @bagwandave For those who are trying to find early Fleetwood Mac search "Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac".

    Good choices man.

  • @bagwandave Stan Webb's Chicken Shack (Stan also was a member of Savoy Brown on the Boogie Bros album) he's another great Bluzman from England who never got his Props....

  • About 12 yrs ago I collected lots of kickaass albums and this one along w/ "Hellbound Train," "Lions Share," "Looking In," and "A Step Further." Later I bought "Savage Return" and "RnR Warriors." My GOD those are the best Savoy Brown albums around. I cranked up all their songs and saw them live in Seattle in '95 (Kim was the only original player I think). I really really respect them so much, they are true hard blues rockers!!!!!!

  • @TheDudesterguy1 Don't forget about the killer "Street Corner Talking" album.

    Loves me some Savoy Brown!

  • glad i found this:P

  • what an awesome SONG! AHHH! real music! Oh yessss.

  • Chris Youlden...One down dude in life's one-act play.

  • I played the grooves off this album decades ago, & now it is on my MP3...that should tell you how much I love this album!!

  • It's Halloween time again. Break out this song!!!! Amen.

  • One of my favourite all time albums.....timeless!

  • savooyyy fuckin brown

  • Right fuckin' ON.

    The veri essence of kool

  • with no disrespect to a few of the so called " great british blues bands" really deep down they wish they had this much soul, this groove they cut was iand is still a tough act to follow, like a lot of great bands like savoy brown I am sick as to why they are not in any hall of fame for the music they made, john lee hooker said it best, " nothin' but the best is laid out for the garbage, natural facts'"

  • In "69" I was way back in the Canadian bush with a friend and his excell;ent stereo, some hot acid, and this album-not CD. we came down the next day with a new head and appreciation of the Brown. My oh my, I have not changed.

  • ..the whole album is an unsung classic..one of the best ever...stay while the night is young...stay while the song is sung!!

  • The year was 69. My lady & I traveled to the Santa Monica Civic to see Savoy Brown. Kim lit the air w/ blazing guitar fire. I said to myself (again): "This is landmark". Like when I saw the very early Janis prior to her explosion or Rod's vocals with Beck on "Truth". Sad to say the universal explosion never happened with Savoy Brown. Shame & yet, we all in that hall that night, witnessed glory and eternal bliss... (They can't take that away). Thank you Kim Simmons (and band mates)!

  • Every song on this record is good! I dig Lonesome Dave, but nothing really compares to this earlier Chris Youlden stuff. Blue Matter & maybe this record? was engineered by a young Roy Baker. (Roy Thomas Baker: Queen, Journey, The Cars etc..) Also see very early Foghat records. Foghat did some very cool stuff in their day.

  • all that and the beginings of foghat too. isnt this wonderfull. RIP LoDave

  • YEA!...On the sunset strip watching then hearing on the FM ...Later the LP Lion ....Please post "LOVE MR PLEASE"!

  • Nice to hear this album has influenced so many....a masterpiece indeed. It was my favorite as a 14 yr old kid. Nobody has come close.

I saw them at the Roundhouse...any body know where that is? Ha! very hip venue.

    1970-71....alot of legends played there.

I'm old now, and my memories still haunt me....thanks for posting these classics. I would have a heart attack if I heard anyone do these classics Live. Especially with all this crap they're calling music these days.

  • Anyone know where the Roundhouse is? Oh yes, spent a lotof time there on Sundays around the same time as you, but missed Savoy Brown. Brilliant place, couldn't get away with what went on there now though, without being leapt upon by horders of meatheaded security jobsworths in yellow jackets. You must o remember Midnight Court at the Lyceum, and the Temple in Wardour Street. As for not hearing any of this live, give it a couple more years when my guitar playing improves and you just might.

  • @kevincanwait There's actually a young band here on Youtube doing "A Hard Way To Go" (from this album) live and they're from Hungary, called The Fat Back Band, and they do a pretty good job of it!

  • @kevincanwait I remember the Rainbow Room in Toronto, the Roundhouse, rings a bell , but sure where it was?

  • @kevincanwait You know I grew up with this music myself since I was about 7 and I was loving it then and I am 24 now and still do. My Pops was watching these guys just about every time they would come through Detroit. I'd have to say this album and A Step Further are my favorite albums they put out there. That's probably because they were the two I listened to the most. I do not think you will ever find another Chris Youlden. Well you keep on rockin and I'll do the same. Take care

  • @kevincanwait yeah I got to see them 3 times at Fillmore West the first time Chris Youlden was with them the last 2 Dave was doing the vocal both versions of the band were great and a much better live band. Vinyl never gave them the justice their live sound did.

  • saw them open for pink floyd at the original electric factory in philly when i was still in high school , i think '68 . ticket price $3

the best . still have it on vinyl. .

  • sweet shit

    thanks for posting

    cheers

  • A freak has no money, and a pauper has no friends.

  • @chrisradano

...ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT LINE...all the way back to '71...THOSE WERE THE DAYS FOR SURE....thanks for highlighting it!!

  • Thanks for the -1 on my last comment. This is an excellent album. Pricks!

  • thanks for thanking god for this song

  • I've grown up with this album and thank God I did.

  • i love savoy hes so hot

  • This has always been one of my top favorites from S.B.!! Especially love the intro & outro!

  • The guy is Ray Davies and he sings in a different octave altogether maybe you're confusing the Kinks with The 5th Dimension

  • how could anyone confuse the Kinks with the 5the Dimension??????? just curious.....

  • @jdal1950 I can't find the post your responding to but that shits funny "confusing The Kinks With The 5th Dimension", kinda like confusing Tiny Tim with Megadeath, to funny.....

  • What a memory. I saw Savoy Brown in Chicago in 1971 at the "Syndrome" and they were backing up Rod Stewart and Small Faces. Rod was sick and didn't go on but Savoy ROCKED anyway. Great show.

  • patafoya,

I was there too! I remember as we were waiting to get in the door, the street PA, they said Rod Stewart canceled, but me and my buddies were not upset because we were there to see Savoy Brown and we were not disappointed! I thought that concert was held at the Chicago Stadium, the original place the Blackhawks played hockey. I'm trying to remember if another group played along with Savoy Brown (in place of Stewart)?

  • Break out this album for Halloween.

  • Remember how pissed we would all get back then if a rock band had added strings, and horns, how over-produced we always thought that was? Not this album, no way, not ever.

  • Thank you for posting this. THIS is why I love this site. Savoy Brown happened to be largely lost in the mix back in 69. What a fucking year. I heard them. Yes I did. Still do. Great stuff. Thanks!

  • A freak don't have no money

And a pauper has no friends.

Words from C Youlden, a blues poet, and one of UK's greatest blues singers.

  • THE BEST ! No more no Less........

  • great song & great clip friend

    one of my fav songs!!!

    cheers Gazza

  • Savoy Brown is so unappreciated, this was a great band with very talented members.

  • yeah.. they have so many incredible songs..

  • @smetch123

    A Definite YES to that

  • Every time I hear Chris Youlden sing, I swear for a second that it's the guy from the Kinks.

  • You need to get your hearing checked

  • one of the greatest blues bands of all time and kim simmonds is rock's best kept secret he is one helluva a guitarist end of story
