This is definitely something that Japan has right. I had to go to a damn doctor to get my ears cleaned. A ball of wax as big as a pencil eraser was cleaned out of each ear. My hearing was so muffled that after I got them cleaned, I felt like I got new ears and everything around me sounded dramatic and crisp. Cost me 280 dollars. If I lived in Japan I would not have had so much ear wax built up.

Ear doctors strongly advise people to not use q tips. While you can scrape out some wax and end up with a dirty q-tip, you will actually end up pushing a lot of ear wax inwards, which makes the problem worse.

It depends on the person. I've used q-tips my whole life and my doctors constantly tell me that my ears are perfect. This sucks because I'd really like to get their devices used on my ears, but I couldn't go more than 2 days without cleaning...it'd drive me nuts. It also depends on one's ethnicity. My wax is white and powdery and my wife's is that sick, yellow gunk.

You don't use anything. Just have someone else clean it. And people have had q-tip material found in their ears before from trying to self clean.
