Its a shame the production protocol for this particular show didn't allow such a dynamic, unique, all-star ensamble -- that's never likely to play together again -- the time for (even) more improvisation in their solos. Great idea but definitely a wasted opportunity.
I have to agree entirely with Johnnie Rhodes, This interpretation was a mismash, pretty good, but not rehearsed well. and therefore a bit sort of second rate. A waste of great talent.
I have to agree entirely with Johnnie Rhodes, This interpretation was a mismash, pretty good, but not rehearsed wel, and therefore a bit second rate. Their heatrs didn't seem to be in it.
such great players but jazz (the way I see it and yeah Im one person but whatever) should be more personal than this. it should be dirty it should be raw. this is so overproduced and cheesy I can't even stand to watch this........ it is sad. no disrespect for the players who are legends... i guess they got paid and thats what counts.... or is it?
All star team, for not such great results. I'm with Modes9. George is arguably the best jazz guitarist alive, and while his singing is good, it just doesn't compare to his playing. Sheila E. is absolutely wonderful and so lovely, not to mention Herbie.... Every one on that stage is a top shelf musician but somehow the sum of the parts is just not what one would expect. and of course, less than 3 minutes just can't allow these folks to shine at all. But why did they sign up for this????
I agree.... They have all these great players up there for nothing. I would have just rather heard 1 developed solo than a little tid-bit from each of them.
@mihailkrugtheadonis You are right, but maybe 8-bar was given beacuse song is vocal based and it's not meant for instrument improvisations. but I know what you coming form especially the flute solo didn't fall into place at all.
I can't believe that so many people have so many different opinions here . I guess that's why they call it Jazz......interpretation . For me...I didn't like this piece as it seemed rush and thrown together wihout any reheasal to speak of . You can just tell . Benson should have been on his guitar....leaving out the vocals would have given each artist more time to improvize . And as for Herbie....he always raises the bar .
What I can deduce from this is that this is the brainchild of someone in upper management who thought to themselves 'I know, these people are all amazing performers, lets throw them all together and see what happens'. Of course, while these guys are all amazing and may not play 'wrong' notes, the real spark which comes from years of playing together is just not here. All of them are still amazing in their own right though.
Arturo can play straight-ahead jazz no problem, and he came around later than already established guys that "rhumbaphone" mentioned. He is not considered pure jazz player because half of the time he is playing his Cuban stuff, in Latin shows, concerts etc. He is underrated.
Check out his "Live at the Brewhouse theater, England 1992". He is very natural musician just like George B. Very natural and lyrical when needed.
His speed and high notes is not an "ego", its his style trust me.
I know i'm gonna get some negative feed back but hear it goes. All of these guys are legends (except arturo, unless you count his legendary ego)and herbie may even be my favorite pianist ever, but this is some cheeezy ass crap. especially considering who was on stage.
I respect your opinion....I've heard and seen better...I actually studied next to Sandoval's studio and heard him live plenty of times....I have first hand accounts. I feel like I'm right...Gob Bless ;). Oh and red is one of my favorite colors ;)
sandoval can play, but you can't hold him up on to same level as miles, freddie hubbard, clark terry, clifford brown, nicholas payton, woody shaw, lee morgan...i can go on & on. playing well and being legendary are different things. good taste and intelligence are required for the latter. arturo is an animal. 98% testosterone. Jazz is about communication not ego. many players play lots of notes but freddie hubbard says more in one than arturo can say in 1,000,000. That's legendary playing!
I disagree, Sandoval is a damn good player... Wynton Marsalis is a hugely egotistical person; and he is definitely a jazz legend... Also, that solo break was incredible
yeah, but wynton can actually play. (and with a good sound) as for arturo and his BS, to each his own. lots of people like his playing. i'm not a big fan.
Benson proves his all round versatility as a musician. Not only can he play guitar, he started out as R&B musician, progressing to Jazz, later on he realises his soulful voice was being wasted, so he became a soul star too, he also made it big in pop too with massive hits like give me the night, love times love and never give up on a good thing, what a talent.
yes but he completely sold out! he could be creating and playing some really cool jazz and breaking ground for a new type of music but intstead he keeps playing that stupid smoothe jazz shit...I will give him the fact he has a voice but no creativity like a Pat Metheny or Kurt Rosenwinkel on Guitar..those guys know how to be innovators..like miles...but benson sucks and that's why anything new doesn't sell amongst Jazz afficiandos...that's a fact...
Sorry, but I disagree with you, Benson sill continues to have long standing success, even his concerts are sell out here in the UK, a testament to his reputation as one of our greatest musicians.
big concerts what does that mean? so does britney, justin, and every other pop singer..
I'm talking about true impressionistic jazz....his music is plebian at best and I'm sorry but not forward thinking or demonstrating any ingenuity whatsoever...ask a true jazz musician...
Well, I respect your opinion, but you only have to look around and see how many people follow his music. . .he must be doing something right, even if it is smooth. . .its obvious that people like it me included, so why repair a wheel that is not broken? thanks for your comments though.
I appreciate yours as well...sometime I can be harsh, I don't mean to critize him as a person..I really get disappointed in his choices..He is extremely gifted but, like Lee Ritenour I don't like the direction he went..they have the right to do what they wish..but Please Liten to Kurt Rosenwinkel- "the Remedy" Live at the Village Vanguard and you will see what I mean..He is about 37 and brilliant on the guitar..sings with it but very subtle...that CD captures...the Live experience..
I wouldn't say he sold out. I mean he could always play pretty mean jazz. His guitar playing was always good but I could never get into his songwriting/vocal R&B thing. I mean he just sounded so lame. His "Here Comes The Sun" cover is just awful.
How can you say that about his vocal delivery? That cover was far before Benson went R&B. That cover is a wonderful arrangement of the tune, and Benson's vocal really does it justice. George is definitely among some of the most talented guitar players in the world today, and he's an amazing vocalist to boot. It's just too bad that he doesn't do more straight-ahead jazz dates. It's sad that he didn't play guitar on this one, but as said before, it's pretty cheesy. Sandoval far less than Hancock.
if you don't like it then just don't listen man. besides that, arturo is still kickass with all his technique and style, his range is just the icing on the cake.
Saxophones do the exact same things, so do trombones, it's just a style thing. If you can do it and sound good than why not? Now, if there's no musicality or ideas behind the screaming that's one thing, but....
George Benson on results of Russian magazine " Expert " - is the best guitarist - the improvisator in the world. Its voice is too something unusual! Benson the best! Again I dream to get on its concert! With greetings from Russia Viktor!
How come no one talks about one of the greats, Arturo Sandoval. There're few (FEW) trumpeters that can get to that last note.
