@UnAmericanBandstand I had to write when I saw the screen name. If I remember my Cheech and Chong, wasn't "UnAmerican Bandstand," one of their early bits from one of their funnier albums? I was a hard core fan. I still call everybody "Man," like they did, even in 2011. The one time it got me in trouble was when I called my dad "Man." He got about as mad as I ever saw him get. the one time i remember him hitting me.

I'm all for influences but it's disappointing how closely Dylan borrowed from other artists for many of his songs.

Wow wow wow! Fantastic.Funny, tonight I was researching the meaning of the phrase, "hog eyed man" in sea shanties & I had t found 2 meanings. One had to do with a D ring on barges that were crewed by blacks in America; that the D rings looked like hog's eyes. The second was that it, like the one eyed snake, was a sexual allusion. Now I am certain. When paired with jelly roll as in these lyrics the sexual meaning must be correct. Thank you.

All his life, Leadbelly would never call a white man by his Christian name - it was always Mr Guthrie, Mr Seeger etc. Woody tried interminably to change the habit but without success. Brilliant black man with hard soul, thanks for posting it

@crudchuck So interesting... Really a bridge, culturally and musically, between a distinctly racist time in our history and the very planting of modern seed. Kids born at that time may have grown up to be soul singers or classic rockers. So so absolutely fascinating to hear!
