This version of Spiritual is on Charlie's album "Dreamkeeper" with the Liberation Music Orchestra. It's also on "Steal Away," his duet album with Hank Jones. The one on the Hadne/Metheny album does seem to be a different composition altogether.
the song on Missouri Sky - Haden/Metheney has a different melody. The one on Steal Away is this melody, but with a piano. I'm trying to locate the version in this vid with the trombone as the lead. I can't locate the Dreamkeeper album. Does anyone have a link? much appreciated.
I just checked Amazon. First, looks like the album title is two words, "Dream Keeper." Second, looks like it's out of print. Pity. It's a great album from the late 80s. Not on iTunes store either. There are some used copies to be found thru Amazon.
Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, in the U.S. we can't make purchases from stores in other countries. I'll keep checking our iTunes - maybe they will get it as well. have a good one!
According to Charlie Haden's own liner notes in his "Beyond the Missouri Sky", (with Pat Metheney) Spiritual was written by his son Josh, and recorded on Josh's album "Blue Moods of Spain"
That's what so confusing. The "Spiritual" on Josh's album has a different melody than the one in this video. I checked iTunes & other download sites & can't locate this version. It's hard to believe that Charlie Haden would have 2 songs with the same name, but different melodies???? Wish someone could solve the mystery.
Hi, I might be able to shed some light on this, but I think you've got it figured out. The Haden family is responsible for writing two tunes named "Spiritual," which are entirely different. The song performed in this video was composed by Charlie, and as David Sanborn points out is dedicated to Martin Luther King. The other song titled "Spiritual" was composed by Charlie's son Josh.
That song, the one composed by his son, is the song recorded on "Beyond the Missouri Sky," and also on Charlie's most recent release, "Ramblin' Boy." I know it's confusing when two different songs have the same title. Another example is the Ornette Coleman tune, "Lonely Woman," and the Horace Silver tune of the same name. Same name, different songs.
Actually, Charlie Haden didn't write the song "Spiritual" that he recorded on Beyond the Missouri Sky and his Ramblin' Boy album. Johnny Cash wrote it

Bravo. I've always wondered the same thing and you've cleared it up.

Very different tunes indeed! Josh's Spiritual is a lullaby, while Charlie's is a "marching saints" funeral song.
