There use to be 100's of these great Bill Tracy darkrides in America. Now, due to all the park closing and effects of time, there are less than a handfull. Waldameer Park has the proud distinction to be able to say they have 2 (this and The Pirites Cove). If you want to see and feel what a real darkride is all about, I'd advise you to go here yourself. You won't regret it, I promise!
I love this Amuesment park just as much as kennywood or cedar point because it is family fun rides it does not really matter how old you are! :p ....... Even though i have to drive 2 and a half hrs. to get here iu live 20 min. from pittsburgh !
The Hunt's Pier Whacky Shack was SBNO in 1995, and removed early 1996 during the remodeling into Dinosaur Beach which closed end of 1998 season. The Golden Nugget was rebuilt at Knoebels and is opening this summer. The Whacky Shack in Wildwood , NJ at Hunt's Pier was called Hunt's Horror from 1989 and up.
Hunt's Pier in Wildwood, NJ had a Whacky Shack there are videos of the outside of it here on YouTube from 1986 and 1988 for a few seconds it had the moving letters on the facade. some of the props inside included the sawmill, whacky clock, knit wit, hell's kitchen, crooked mine, skeleton hands coming out of doors, and more. There are some interior pics at laffinthedark in the dark rides of Hunt's Pier article and a few rare pics in the Tracy darkness article at laff as well as Anthony's boardwalk
Thanks to whoever posted this - it's nearly identical to the Whacky Shack at Joyland in Wichita, KS (closed now, but a pretty darn integral part of my childhood. ;)
I love tht ride!!!! I went in w/ my bro wen i was 7 and it creeped me out a lil but then i went this yr and it was awesomeeeee but @ the end it sprays mist at u and it smelt so bad
@WolvesLoveMeHaha Well, long story, pretty much I got hired in as a singer/dancer but i was also going to college full time in mentor ohio @ Lakeland so I was late alot n i loved the singing but had a hard time learning the dances. Anyways they fired me 2 days b4 the park opened, so they were jerks about it.
@brittanybug10 sweet! That's something I need to see. I may be coming up in August, not sure yet. It's a 2 hour & 15 minute drive from my house to Waldameer. :-(
@kennywoodjoe I'm not 100% sure that they remodeled it, but it really looked like it!!! And for me, it is a 2 hr. 15 minute drive too....I live in Pittsburgh.
@brittanybug10 Now that you mention it, I think you're right! I remeber seeing a lot more in 2010 than when I went on it in 2009. I think they remodeled it since it turned 40 last year. I think they also did some work on the Pirate's Cove fun house as well.
Hello earthlings! I have some instructions that you must obey before coming into my house! You must keep your arms and legs inside your car! Remain seated throughout the ride with both feet flat on the floor! NEVER throw things at me! Or I'll see that you lose your wristband! Maybe with your arms still attached! I'll be watching to see that you behave yourself! HA HA HA HA HA HA!
this is the only original whacky shack still operating (not counting Lumalusion at the Texas State Fair or maybe Fantastic Journey at Wonderland amusement park in Armadillo Texas)
This is the ride at Waldameer Park that I rode on alone many time because no one else would cause my it only seats 2, 3 if your small or skinny ...My brothers went on together and I went in a buggy after them...It's corny but it's all we got(lol) It ride starts around 2:00
My favorite part of the ride is the mirror room with the blinking strobe light. The famous award-winning Haunted Mansion (1979) ride at Funland in Rehoboth Beach, DE also ends with an oncoming truck hurled at the riders upon exit. :)
Actually Waldameer's Whacky Shack opened in 1970 with their Pirates Cove opening in 1972. Look for a event at Waldammer next year to celebrate the 40th birthday of the Whacky Shack,
I grew up in Wichita and remember the Joyland Whacky Shack as a kid. Now I live an hour away from Waldameer- I'll have to compare the two. I wonder if the Waldameer version has a topless witch in it too..?
the only really scary part is the thing at the end that honcks out of no were also that ride sounds so out of shape like the screching mi god that thing needs major work to sound like new
hah i built a ride like this but it sets in pitch black always and it runs at night only , im a producer n im 16 n i kno alot on rides and such , so i came out with a scary and thrilling ride , its lot like this one but mine feels if ur falling in mid air and its in 3D with high tech 3D illusional glasses , but i love this ride whacky shak ,its the natural thrill and fear for ppl. :}
I'm scared to death of this ride! I only rode it once, and that time I shut my eyes and plugged my ears. But I think I may be able to survive it this year since I rode Haunted Mansion at Disney World. Whacky Shack can't be much worse than that, right?
I'm impressed...we have a wacky shack in Wichita Kansas at Joyland Amusement park ...unfortunately the park is rotting away right now not in operation...but when everything in the old shack was working it was very similar to this one...I didn't know there was more than one
I know they removed alot of the dips from these rides, but looking at the front of the building it looks like the dip on this one might have originally been deeper then it is now. Can anyone confirm this?
I used to work at this park when I was a lad. They did shorten the dip and at 00:46 you can see the line in the blue paint where the dip originally was.
One thing Pennsylvania has over the big mega parks and that's the good old hometown park charm. I was born and raised in Florida and never experienced the classic dark ride like this one. Down here, it's always cutting edge and high tech. There's something to be said for the low tech rides like this one.
I've ridden that ride a million times. It hasn't changed a single bit since the first time I rode it (probably in the early 80s) and I can remember a time when the line to get in was so long you'd stand there for hours.
My friends and I always joked that the light/horn before you go outside was to get people to stop making out before they emerged outside!
Junepath is right! I live in Erie, I go there all the time with my friends. And the size of the line to get into that 2 minute ride is just crazy! It's a great ride, and a great City!
I live in Albion Pennsylvania which is a small town right by Erie. Im 14 years old, and every year, our 7th and 8th grade class goes to waldameer as a field trip! Ive been going to waldameer every summer my whole life! good memories in the wacky shack....
I like when they have cars for you to ride through on, cuz when i was little, i got terrified when i had to walk through places like this...
