I was up a stepladder in the electricians compound at the side of the stage watching this - 14 years old. Now 69ers, my novel about the festival is my 56th publication - read the extracts at dylan69.com (not forgetting the 3 w's).
I was there, and remember Rikki Farr telling the crowd to be cool about all the celebs at front mixing and breathing the same air as we lesser mortals. Because Levon Helm was the spokesperson of the band (Band ) I thought they were all good'ol boys like him. They played a great set, then Dylan came on for some solo acoustic, then played together with the Band, Wonderful!
It actually does appear to be early video tape footage. There is precious little footage from IOW '69... in '70 there was a ton of cameras and 8 track audio as well. Festival concert sound was in its infancy. You can tell by all the many boom stands that litter the stage they really hadn't much experience!
This is great who would have thought they had iPhones back in the 60s to record this footage) Do you have anymore stuff with just The Band at Isle Of Wight 69? I don't care much for them with Dylan( But just The Band superb!!!
this made me cry
people find love in things other people are willing to neglect, or even give away

I was there. The Band was on for ages (hours, literally) before Dylan showed. Dylan came on in a cowboy hat, did a short medley, left.

thumbs up to the one and only Rick Danko. also it was rumoured John Lennon filmed this and the Dylan set as he was sitting in the front row.

@ukvids thanx for this - much rumoured, never seen. may i ask if you filmed this yrself...? or how you came across the footage?
bertisg 1 year ago
@bertisg I found it online. It was part of Bob Dylan's set. I think The Band did "The Weight" before Bob came out, as an opener of sorts.

I have to wonder what the Brits thought of the repeated references to "Miss Fanny".

The Band backed Dylan, immediately preceding him with their set from which this number is taken. Dylan was something of an anticlimax after it.

I was most fortunate in that I was in the audience when this was recorded and like many of my contemporaries watched the Moon Landings live.
