There is a special episode in generation II where there is exactly 1 year since he and Pikachu met. Pokemon are given to new trainers the same date every year, meaning it must have been at least 2 years from when he started (as 10 years old) and when he met May... Meaning that he would be 13-14 during DP.

However, in BW they 'restart' the whole series... :(
