Sub-genres exist because they have to exist. Music has branched out in so many different directions compared to back in the day. There used to be only one kind of rock and roll, one kind of rap, one kind of jazz, etc. Nowadays the shit is so diverse, to just call a heavy band "metal", is too generalized. Thrash metal is completely different than black metal, so you kinda have to separate the two. Same with old school rap and the new shit. It just makes sense. But I do know what you mean.
