Remember its symbolic like a dream and it was made by a film maker so its going to be more about the visuals then a story that "makes sense".

Hes bandaged from a prior battle with them, since then hes been going around setting traps. Walking around though he sees dead bodies. The big white Ant represents "The Invaders" and when he sees the symbol he knows they have taken over that area. So he cracks up from the stress and fear. It could be all in his mind as a paranoid delusion too.
