It's insane how long it takes. I was born in Canada, therefore I am a citizen. My son, though born outside of Canada is Canadian by virtue of being my son. The proof is simple, birth cert here, my birth cert etc... but it takes at least a fucking year to get the card. INSANE. No reason why it should take so long. Japan get the same sort of thing done in less than 3 weeks

You have to understand: the Canadian immigration system is a machine made to exploit immigrants in all levels of the immigration process. If you migrate to Canada chances are you will be milked out of your money and end up in poverty in a dead end job. Immigration to Canada is a huge mistake.

Hopefully one day some of those nasty commentors below will lose their entire wallet, or at least their Driver's License, and someone I know will be working at the license office. I'll get the worker to pull up their records and picture on computer file (which, duh, matches the person standing in front of them), + say, "Sorry, we need another 10 months to make sure you are who you say you are. Don't like it? Don't drive."

I'm just shaking my head at some of the people below making snide remarks to this lady. She makes a good point about Canadian bureaucracy. In a country of only 30 million, with one of the most expensive governments in the world per capita, how many people can possibly need replacement citizenship cards at one time? It does NOT take 10 months to verify identity; meanwhile, celebrities or athletes etc. can get clearance within days or weeks.

I do have a similar issue with them, a refund pending since december 2008 and now we are in july 2009. i emailed them many times and they say its "being processed"

Unlike the US, Canada does not require its citizens to show a Canadian passport to re-enter the passport.

A UK passport should be more than sufficient when departing from the UK (since UK citizens don't require a visa anyway to enter Canada) and once you arrive in Canada, showing supplementary documentation (like driver's license, employment records, etc.) along with your UK passport should be more than sufficient.

I work for the folks that provide healthcare coverage for Canadians.Lots of folks throw down like a 2 yr old when asked for proof of their citizenship to get/retain status. CIC is also bombarded by fakers&criminals daily. You of COURSE are more important that the10,000 other requests. Sorry sparkles it's up to you to keep your ducks in row. Ever hear of a photocopier or a scanner ?

People that use that have NO problem getting new docs.

The more likely scenario is that we're dealing with a child who wishes to seem important, and is acting rude because on the internet nobody is accountable.

I had to travel to the States in Apr & Aug. and it took having to go to my MP's office to get them to extend the passport, which they did, with the stipulation that no further extensions woud be granted. In Oct, they sent me another letter, requesting more documents. GRRRR! The card did eventually come in Feb 2009. I now have to reapply for a new 5 yr passport. The only blessing in all this is I get to take a new passport picture, the other one was simply horrid!

My heart goes out to you. I just went through the same nightmare myself. Sept 2007 an official tore my citizenship certificate at the passport office making the number illegible, so I had to apply for proof. They issued a 6 month passport in the interim (despite charging me for a 5 yr passport) and told me it would take 6 mos for my proof of citizenship to arrive. March 2008 I got a letter acknowledging my request, & telling me it would take another 7 mos. They extended my passport til Oct 2008

I know this advice is too late for you, but naturalized citizens should always have a valid passport kept separately from their citizenship card for exactly this reason.
